What exactly can encapsulate how a year in Cambridge has been like? What choice of words, what photos, what specific memories would suffice to capture the whirlwind of emotions, the myriad of new experiences? Nothing really seems to come close, but here’s a shot at it.

Cook-outs – One of the first few things that you’ll start missing when overseas would definitely be the food; your humble hokkein mee, chye tao kueh, rojak, laksa… you name it, we’ll crave it. The fact that the only photos that Singaporeans seem capable of posting on Facebook are that of food certainly doesn’t make things easier. So what does one do then? LEARN HOW TO COOK. This was no mean feat for me especially, as someone who didn’t know how to cook an omelette without charring. The learning curve may be steep but you’ll be surprised at how fast you’ll learn and also how high your tolerance for substandard food becomes when you’ve misjudged the time to let your noodles boil and the amount of salt to add for the 912695th time. Not to worry also, CUMSA is overrun by excellent individuals who are so well-rounded that they can not only finish all their supervision work, attend formals every night and generally save the world, but they can cook. So when you’re tired of eating over-salted soggy noodles, all you need to do is wrangle an invitation to dinner. Oh the delicacies that they can whip up, but more importantly the glorious company and bonds forged over dinner. Food really is one of the ties that bind Singaporeans together and served together with a generous helping of laughter and Singlish chatter, it does wonders to lift one’s spirit.

Arghhhhhh! – To be fair, I ran out of brain juice and just could not find a suitable word. But I think this sense of exasperation does describe the main emotion felt when ploughing through example papers and coursework. But know that there is always light at the end of the tunnel and somehow, with much determination and help from your fellow passengers in the same boat, the example papers can be conquered.

Market Square – To me, this is one of the most iconic places in Cambridge; the lively atmosphere during weekends with buskers around and the many trinkets to look at, sweet treats from the candy store and who can forget the Belgium waffles with the cute owner! Many lazy weekends after church were spent just browsing through books and knick-knacks on sale, or just window shopping with a cone from Benet’s in hand.

Bosom buddies – The rigor of Cambridge definitely demands a lot and it would have been dreadfully mundane without the support of friends both old and new. People who would sit on the grass with you and make daisy chains, plan a Japanese-themed birthday dinner to celebrate your first birthday away from home, leave anonymous chocolates in your pidge to make you smile, lounge on the grass like hobos and pluck mouldy grapes, grate countless potatoes to make rosti, clamber over a mountain of luggages to find your shipping boxes and generally colour your life with such brilliance. Bosom buddies; the world could do with more of them. 

River Cam / Punting – Synonymous with lazy summer days, dubious legend promising firsts and the ever-present threat of contracting a deadly disease from the murky waters, punting was somewhat like a passage of rites. From the very first time you wield the rod in an attempt to move forward and find yourself zig-zagging across the width of the river, much to the exasperation of other seasoned punters, to the bridge-jumping attempts on the way down to Grantchester for some tea and scones, every punting trip is a special memory and a real luxury (seeing as how the weather scarcely allows for it sometimes!)

International friends – Being overseas definitely gives you the chance to make friends from all walks of life, and cliché as it sounds, there’s so much to learn about the various cultures and diversity of opinions in Cambridge. Well-worth it to strike a day of studying off your list and just lounge in someone’s room, talking about issues that you’ve always had a strong opinion on and hearing how others may feel differently for it.

Department – Days of rushing lab reports till the wee hours and walking back slowly up the hill, talking about everything and yet nothing in particular. You’ll soon know your department like the back of your hand and every little corner becomes a keeper of cherished memories; where you had your first lecture, first supervision, tea-break table to hide away from the stress of school for awhile… This place has literally become your second home!

Golden House/ Lan Hong – Every engineer’s favourite lunch spot! Piping hot roasted duck, salt and pepper prawns… a treat especially during the bitter winter days where cold sandwiches just aren’t going to cut it. The über friendly shop owners are definitely a welcoming sight! Who knows, when you get to know them well enough they might just upgrade your portion! ;)

Europe – With Europe in the backyard of UK, travelling is often a luxury taken for granted. You could pop over to France for the weekend and be back in time for lectures on Monday – complete with Ladurée macaroons for tea to make you the envy of the entire lunchroom. Or you could join Jailbreak and backpack around Europe (or even further) for charity!

In short, an exchange in Cambridge has definitely been a most eye-opening and enriching experience that I’m grateful for. And much love and thanks goes out to everyone and CUMSA for making it a home away from home. 

Capstone Year Abroad

...The Chinese Language Flagship Program culminates in a year abroad--a "Capstone year." As a language initiative that actively encourages learning through immersion, the Capstone year (in either Nanjing or Tianjin, China) is the final result of years of intensive Mandarin study and the last step to reaching the ILR 3, superior language proficiency. In addition to the general goals of proficiency, Flagship students are challenged by the transformative process of studying, living, and working in a foreign country. Frankly, the Capstone year often begins with a great deal of stress. A year abroad requires that participants - typically college seniors- accustomed to relying on support from parents and communities navigate through the challenges of a foreign country and culture. While most prospective participants have traveled abroad before, there is a tremendous difference between three months (the average length of a summer study program) and an entire year away from home. In just the first week, Flagship students are required to independently travel to China, locate their university campus, find an apartment, and choose courses--and this is only the first week. While these tasks may not seem...

My Year Abroad – Brisbane, Australia 2005/2006

...My year abroad – Brisbane, Australia 2005/2006 When I heard that we all had to do an obligatory study abroad for one year, there was no doubt in my mind, Australia, here I come! I’d always wanted to go to Australia and this was a great opportunity for me to do that, to fulfil one of my dreams. Preparing for my year abroad There were a lot of things that had to be arranged prior to my departure, things as selection of subjects, having them approved, finding a place to live, fill out all applications, applying for visa, insurance etc. It is important to keep that in mind, and to take care of everything in good time before departure. And also remember that you have to spend a lot of money even before you leave, for the plane ticket, bond for your apartment, school money, visa, insurance etc. I was quite surprised over the amount of money I had to spend on different things, I hadn’t thought of that. You don’t have to have accommodation before you arrive, but I wanted everything to be taken care of when I arrived. So I checked www.iec.no early, in April I think , to see if anyone wanted a housemate. Here, I found two Norwegian girls looking for a third, we started talking and I got the room. Now, I am located in a very modern, pretty, three-room apartment in Kangaroo Point, close to both the city and QUT. The apartment also comes with a shared pool and BBQ-facilities. I pay $130 ($1 = 5 NKr. approx.) pr. week, which is a reasonable price for a place like this. Prices vary...

Study Abroad Fast Facts: Open Doors Study

...Open Doors Study Abroad Fast Facts I find it very interesting and cool that the amount of new international student enrollment has been increasing every year. From 2013 to 2014 more than 20,000 more students studied abroad. I also find it surprising that the foreign government and university is only 7.7% for the primary source of funding. I would think that the government would be funding more of the study abroad programs taken place. I also find it extremely surprising that how much more white people study abroad than any other race. In 2003/04 83.7% of white people study abroad compared to 5% of Hispanic or Latino (a). A whopping .5% of American Indian or Alaska natives studied abroad that year. My advisor also suggested that I study abroad over the summer, but I knew that I wanted to go abroad during a semester, not over the summer. I wanted to study during a semester because I wanted to experience the culture for...

...my surprise, my parents denied both proposals both years. Although our family goes on vacation during the summer, we’ve just been to seven different states, Puerto Rico, The Dominican Republic, and The Virgin Islands. We have never been toward Europe or South America. I have still never really gotten a taste of different cultures, or at least as much as I would like. Fortunately enough, during my visit at Ashland University, my guide told me about the study abroad program and how he went through it. The study abroad program is a program that you can partake in during your junior or senior years of your college experience. Those who qualify for this program receive the opportunity to further their education in diverse parts of the world. This was very promising news to me and allowed my parents and I to develop a plan for when I attend college. Almost every college, big or small, has a study abroad program. My course of action will be first to check whether or not the college of my choice has this program. Next, near the end of my sophomore year in school, I will meet with an advisor to be sure I’m eligible for the program. You need excellent grades and attendance in order to be able to pursue studying abroad. I very much plan on doing my absolute best during my college experience. Afterwards, I’ll need to develop my campaign for obtaining the necessary amount of money for my trip. It goes without saying that studying abroad is not cheap by any means. Among the various strategies...

Those supporting these programs claimed that these studies were important since it prepares the students for life in an increasingly interconnected world. The people against it see it as a waste of time and money. Statistics shows that 273,996 of the United States students studied abroad for academic credit in the years 2010-2011.
