If all your documents are in order, you should get your fresh passport in five weeks. If you already hold a passport, then your passport should be re-issued in one week. In case of damaged or lost passports (except in case of habitual losers), provided you apply to the same office that issued your original passport, you should get your passport in about five weeks. If you have applied for a duplicate passport to an office other than the one that issued the passport you have lost or damaged, you should get your passport in six weeks.
Remember – It is the applicant’s right to obtain a passport within the prescribed timeframe and without harassment.

In March 2001, Mr Swain, an IAS officer of 1988 batch of Gujarat cadre, was appointed as the Regional Passport Officer, Ahmedabad. He was clearly unhappy about the status of passport application processing and the passport issue time which was estimated to be 145 days (Table 1). He noticed that there was a long queue of applicants waiting to either submit a passport application form or eager to know the status of their application. As on March 2001, the number of pending applications had crossed 100,000. He was keen to explore means and methods by which the response time could be reduced and wanted to redesign and realign the passport issue process with an objective of improving consumer focus.

It is the birth right of every citizen to apply for and obtain a passport.
Usually, it is used as an identification document for travel outside the country.
The Central Passport Organization (CPO), a division of the Ministry of

RPOs in India.
The RPOs have two distinct functions, viz., issuing new passports and providing other related miscellaneous services. Miscellaneous services are broadly classified into eight categories including renewal of passports, re-

...Lecture on Excellence in Education by Dr. C. Rangarajan Chairman Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister New Delhi February 25, 2006 Ahmedabad RESPONDING TO GLOBALIZATION: INDIA’S ANSWER I deem it a great honour to be invited to deliver the 4th Ramanbhai Patel Memorial Lecture on Excellence in Education. Shri Ramanbhai Patel was a true entrepreneur. He came to business from education and set up an indigenous pharmaceutical company, which later became one of the largest manufacturers of drugs and pharmaceuticals. He was deeply interested in the promotion of education and contributed liberally towards this cause. I am indeed happy that the Ahmedabad Management Association has instituted a lecture series to commemorate his memory. Ahmedabad Management Association is perhaps the most active management association in our country. It has become the forum for a discussion of variety of issues relating to industrial growth and business education. Its programmes and seminars have come to be recognized as being the most useful and well organised. May I take this occasion to congratulate the Ahmedabad Management Association on the excellent work it has been doing. It is a matter of great pleasure for me to be in Ahmedabad and to meet familiar faces. Globalization has become an expression of common usage. While to some, it represents a brave new world with no barriers, for some others, it spells doom...

...related to securities. This can be seen in the Indian financial sector reforms also, which started in the early 1990s. Dematerialization of financial securities is the first sign of financial reforms in India. Finance Ministry and SEBI realized the need of more efficient financial system. As a result of this NSDL and CDSL came into picture. It aims at ensuring the safety and soundness of Indian marketplaces by developing settlement solutions that increase efficiency, minimize risk and reduce costs. Our project on “Demat System in India” gave us a detailed picture of how securities are transferred electronically in the share market. In our project we had done a comparative study of the various Depository Participants in Ahmedabad on the basis of their services and charges. This study helped us in finding out what additional services other DPs provide and how the charges differ. Another aspect of our project was to get a feedback from the clients regarding the Demat services provided at Anagram Securities Ltd. By meeting the various clients we were able to find out the scope of improvement in the services provided at Anagram. It becomes increasingly important for students of management to understand the developments in the financial infrastructure that facilitates the whole financial system. We were fortunate enough to get an opportunity to do our summer training in such an area as it gave us a wide understanding of the entire demat system in...
