Human beings have always been intrigued with gold; dating back to the earliest civilizations and even in today's present world. Gold, in early America, was hard to come by. Most often it had to be imported from eastern countries, which of course wasn’t cheap. American needed to discover native gold; not only to save costs but also to reap the rewards that came with that find and in 1848 that dream became a reality. “James Marshall’s discovery of gold at Coloma turned out to be a seminal event in history, one of those rare moments that divide human existence into before and after” (Brands 23), the author’s message is clear from the very first page, however Brands takes an interesting approach to describe the events of the infamous gold rush. …show more content…
One of the few examples that Brands goes into great detail in is the account of John C. Fremont. Fremont is one of the more interesting figures in the text; he was once an officer who helped secure the current state of California from the Mexicans, but then he turned his attention to turning a profit of his own from the gold rush. Brands goes into vivid detail about each individual and their struggles along their travels across the United States. Brands gives an excellent account about the ship bearing travelers who came to California through either Panama or around South America. He also covers the shipping business and the effect the gold rush had upon it. Although Brands did an excellent job in the detailing the expeditions to California he spent too much time on the Argonauts, it almost felt more of a biography instead of an account of the gold …show more content…
Before it was more of a traditional agrarian society but quickly that shifted to a get rich quick way of thinking. This change would forever American society from a work ethic point of view from a hard working citizen to a more lazy and arrogant one that would, according to Brands, destroy the true north American character. The book manages to cover an extensive amount of information and it does it in such an easy to read way. Brands does miss a few issues or fails to explain some in greater detail but in overall he does an excellent job of presenting the gold rush in a relatable

The California Gold Rush

...In 1849, John Sutter struck gold at his mill in Sacramento, California, beginning one of the most pivotal events in United States History. During the next few years, hundreds of thousands of Americans pioneered out west hoping to become prosperous, and strike it rich. Many of these men would lose all of their money, and live in poverty for the rest of their lives. A very small percentage; however, would strike it rich and never have to work again. This influx of people during the Gold Rush led to the development of a new state, but also ruined the lives of thousands and thousands of people. Almost all resources of the west coast were depreciated, and the gold was virtually gone within 2 years. The pioneers arrived to California very unprepared...

Summary Of The Primary Source 'Recollections On The Pacific Railroad'

...This primary document teaches us that the people involved in the constructing and the planning, including the President of the United States took great pride in its completion. The completion of the railroad was remembered with many people there cheering and waiting for the bell to ring. Additionally, I can relate this document to a dramatic scene in a movie because the document explains that the two governors put in the final plate and spikes, with the crowd cheering during these actions. It was very prominent that they felt pride in their construction because they inscribed the last plate to read, “The last tie laid on the completion of the Pacific Railroad, May 10, 1869.” This inscription meaning that they knew the railroads would run for many years to come, even past their lifetime. This document teaches us about that the people responsible for the construction of the Pacific Railroad knew they were building something that would impact the entire country. A way to connect states from east and west and they prove its importance by praying over it, poring champagne and christening...

...1.0 Introduction The Apprentice is a reality television show that originated in the United States on NBC. Billed as "The Ultimate Job Interview", the show depicts a group of 15-18 businessmen and -women competing in an elimination-style competition for a one-year, $250,000 job of running one of real estate magnate Donald Trump's companies. The show led Trump to become known for his fateful catch phrase "You're Fired!". The apprentice season 5, the fifth series of the Apprentice with Donald Trump as the executive producer and host, is not much different from the earlier seasons except for the debut of Donald Trump's children, Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump, Jr. as boardroom judges when either George or Carolyn were unavailable. Amidst all the drama associated with each and every season of The Apprentice, there is much to be learnt about leadership from the 16 competing candidates in Season 5. In order to have a better understanding of the diverse characters and their behaviour and to give a more objective analysis on whether they displayed effective leadership or otherwise, it is necessary to look at some of the theories underlying leadership behaviour. ...Amazon.com Amazon is perhaps the company that is most closely tied with the dot.com gold rush phenomenon. Since 1995 the Seattle based company has grown at a tremendous rate with revenues rising from about $150 million in 1997 to $3.1 billion in 2001. The company made its first quarterly profit of $5.8 million in the fourth quarter of 2001. However, this was dwarfed by massive cumulative operating losses. Amazon’s share price symbolizes the effects of the dot-com gold-rush: [pic] Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos, a computer science and electrical engineering graduate from Princeton University. Bezos had moved to Seattle after resigning as the senior vice-president at D.E.Shaw, a Wall Street investment bank. He did not know much about the Internet. But, he came across a statistic that the Internet was growing at 2300%, which convinced him that this was a large growth opportunity. Not knowing much more, he plunged into the world of E-Commerce with no prior retailing experience. Despite this, during the early days of the Net, Jeff Bezos was one of the few people to understand the special nature of Internet Retailing and E-Commerce. Our goal is to be Earth's most customer-centric company, why? The answer is three things:The first is that customer-centric means figuring out what your customer want by asking them, then figuring out how to give it to them, and then giving it to them. That's the traditional meaning of customer-centric, and we're focused on it. The second...

Alaska the Brand

...Alaska Brand Audit Brand Inventory History Alaska has been a unique brand for many years. Originally known as Russian America because it was owned by Russia, the origin of the name Alaska is a misconception from the first Russian explorers to venture into Alaskan waters (the original Aleut word "alaxsxaq" literally meaning "object toward which the action of the sea is directed"[Alaska]). When the United States bought Alaska, even though the price was only two cents an acre, it was known for many years as “Seward’s Folly” or “Seward’s Icebox”, after William Seward, the Secretary of State who was primarily responsible for pushing the purchase from Russia through Congress. In the early days Alaska’s brand image was mostly negative. It was known as the “Frozen North”, the “land of ice and snow”, the “land without summer”. Many of these images are from the stories and poetry of Robert Service, Jack London and their contemporaries. A good example of this writing is the poem “Cremation of Sam McGee”— see appendix II, (Service). All these extreme brand images dominated perceptions of Alaska prior to the discovery of gold in the Klondike in the late 1800s. After gold was discovered these negative perceptions were softened somewhat, though they remained rather negative—in large part due to the difficulty of living in the far north. Our Brand Survey We did a brand audit of Alaska to see how well Alaska has worked past these harsh criticisms. To accomplish this we surveyed...

It is like a homework task that a good advertising/marketing/sales person would always carry out before (and after) implementing the said product's advertising/marketing strategy. By collecting data with the help of research methods, the researcher can manage to understand the consumer, what he wants, when he wants it, and how he wants it. Research methodologies, more or less, aim to reveal consumers’ different perceptions of the product, in large part about the way it is advertised. The researcher wants to know how effective the advertisement is on his listeners, where the strategy falls short, and where it can improve. Ultimately, it can be said that the most important task of advertising/marketing research is to increase the sales of the product. This requires a well developed...

Brazil

...dye was made out of. In the early days of Brazil sugar plantations drove the economy in the northern part of the country. This lasted for about 150 years until gold was found in the inland southern part of the colony in an area called Minas Gerias in around 1690. This is important because it begins to shift the wealth of the country from the north to the south. Diamonds and other minerals were found. This caused a switch in the main entry port to Rio de Janeiro. In the early 1800’s Napoleon’s army chased the royal family of Portugal out where they fled to their colony of Brazil landing in Rio. As soon as they landed they began to build more modern type infrastructures for Brazil such as banks, universities, mints and museums. The opening and expanding of these ports allowed for better trade with other European nations. When Napoleon fell it allowed Dom Joao VI to return to Portugal and leave his son in charge. During this time Brazil earned status that equal of Portugal. Slave labor was heavily used in Brazil until it was ended in 1888. Landowners were unhappy with this decision leading to the overturn of the government and turning to a more military style rule. Brazil experienced a population expansion from Europeans in the 1900’s due to world wars and other unrest in Europe (www.geographia.com). ...replaced over a period of several years. FMCG have a short shelf life, either as a result of high consumer demand or because the product deteriorates rapidly. Some FMCGs – such as meat, fruits and vegetables, dairy products and baked goods – are highly perishable. Other goods such as alcohol, toiletries, pre-packaged foods, soft drinks and cleaning products have high turnover rates. An excellent example is a newspaper- every day's newspaper carries different content, making one useless just one day later, necessitating a new purchase every day. The following are the main characteristics of FMCGs:[1] • From the consumers' perspective: • Frequent purchase • Low involvement (little or no effort to choose the item – products with strong Brand loyalty are exceptions to this rule) • Low price • From the marketers' angle: • High volumes • Low contribution margins • Extensive distribution networks • High stock turnover Examples include non-durable goods such as soft drinks, toilees, and grocery items.[1][2] Though the absolute profit made on FMCG products is relatively small, they generally sell in large quantities, so the cumulative profit on such products can be substantial. Fast-moving consumer electronics are a type of FMCG and are typically low priced generic or easily substitutable consumer electronics, including lower end mobile phones, MP3 players, game players, and digital cameras, which have a short usage life, typically a year or less, and as such are disposable...
