Abstract
The reconditioning process of Wärtsilä Ltd was established to decrease warranty and maintenance cost, and it is a process in which a customer has the opportunity to return a pump to Wärtsilä GLS for reconditioning after the estimated lifetime of the fuel pump is reached (“Reconditioning of pilot fuel pumps,” 2014). In this paper I will analyze the internal process used by Wärtsilä Ltd and will advise them how it could be reengineered in order to give the company an even more competitive edge.

Introduction In order to stay competitive in today’s global economy more and more businesses are making use of business consultants (Ariño, 2014). A business consultant assists an organization in improving performance and efficiency, by analyzing the business, creating solutions, and assisting companies to meet their goals (Hom, 2013). Nowadays, it is very important for companies to reinvent their operational capabilities, and this is mainly caused by customer sophistication, competitive pressure, and a move to services (Chase, Jacobs, & Aquilano, 2006). Operations consultants can help an organization in developing new and improved strategies, and improving their internal processes.
The Process
I will examine the reconditioning process of fuel pumps of the engine builder company Wärtsilä Ltd. The reconditioning process was established to decrease warranty and maintenance cost, and it is a process in which a customer has the opportunity to return a pump to Wärtsilä GLS for reconditioning after the estimated lifetime of the fuel pump is reached (“Reconditioning of pilot fuel pumps,” 2014). Reconditioning decreases the cost for the customer as it is cheaper than buying a completely new pump.
In 2007, many customers of Wärtsilä

...Business Consulting Paper Kim Spann MGT/527 January 9, 2013 Linda Kulka Business Consulting Paper Business consulting is needed in businesses in the world today. Regardless of what type of business a person has or works for, consulting is needed to see what issues a business has whether good or bad. A business consultant can make a business become better in different aspects. A business consultant does not necessary have to know about the business he or she is consulting, but he or she do need to know what type of business is being consulted. A business consulting discovers the problems in the business and then creates a solution to the problem by making things better in the workplace. According to Bryan (2013), business consultants are the connecting link between discovering problems and creating solutions. They can come as one person, or they could come as a team. No matter what form of business consultant you use, they will have one goal and that will be to meet the goals of the company they are assisting. A business consultant will not put down a business, but will let the owners know what needs to be done to have the business run smoothly or without flaws. According to Pryles (2013), a consultant is an expert at recognizing problems and shaping solutions to those problems. A business consultant has different roles in consulting a business. A person may just believe a business consultant only comes into a business to criticize a business, but most...

What Does Innovation Really Mean?

...Introduction: What does “innovation” really mean? “Technically, “innovation” is defined merely as “introducing something new”, there are no qualifiers of how ground-breaking or world-shattering that something needs to be – only that it needs to be better than what was there before. The fact is, innovation means different things to different people”. (Sylver, 2008) Author’s Qualifications: Brianna Sylver is a writer, researcher, entrepreneur and founder of Sylver Consulting, which works with multinational organizations. Sylver Consulting is known for applying innovation methodologies and consumer research techniques to develop new products and services, prospect new business opportunities and establish innovation processes. (Sylver, 2008) Summary: This article relays information on how an innovative consultant can aid a company in moving their product or starting a new product. It is important to understand what innovation truly means in the organization or to the client in order to know what changes need to be made or what is required of the organization. Sylver states, “the consulting firm contracted for the innovation services first needs to understand the client’s motivation for seeking innovation services. (Sylver, 2008) The client usually looks for innovation services due to one of the three situations: 1. “They are engulfed in the flames of the “burning platform”. (Sylver, 2008) This is where the organizations profits are falling, their product isn’t selling, and...

...company. Her section handles all billing complaints and service difficulties. The main products are landlines, mobile telephones and internet access. She is required to present a report about the performance of her section, as part of the regular performance review. In the original job description her role was to “control the total costs of the complaints section while maintaining an excellent level of service to our customers likely to ensure long term return business.” The main cost is the hourly labour costs of the over 300 consultants employed in her sections. The consultants range in experience from a few months to three years. To a very large extent, consultants can be rostered on and off to match the busiest periods of incoming calls, in three hour blocks. There are roughly equally numbers of males and females, though nearly all consultants are between 20 and 40 years of age. Esther wants to obtain a snapshot of how customers react to their experience with the complaints centre as well as the efficiency of the consultants in dealing with complaints. Problem Background The complaints section of the call centre has been operation since late 2006. Prior to that date, this function was outsourced and the call centre only handled sales. Customers are often confused about the details of their M-Tel bills, especially during the first few months of their contracts. ...Gorman and many more. McKinsey publishes the McKinsey Quarterly, funds the McKinsey Global Institute research organization, publishes reports on management topics, and has authored many influential books on management. Its practices of confidentiality, influence on business practices, and corporate culture have experienced a polarizing reception. McKinsey was founded in 1926 by James McKinsey in order to apply accounting principles to management. Mr. McKinsey died in 1937, and the firm was restructured several times, with the modern-day McKinsey & Company emerging in 1939. Marvin Bower is credited with establishing McKinsey's culture and practices in the 1930s based on the principles he experienced as a lawyer. The firm developed an "up or out" policy, where consultants who are not promoted are asked to leave. McKinsey was the first management consultancy to hire recent college graduates, rather than experienced managers. In the 1980s and 1990s, the firm expanded internationally and established new practice areas. It had 88 staff in 1951 and 7,700 by the early 2000s.
