The analysis is carried out only on the conduct of navigation – and not on the emergency response at three different levels: the errors of the bridge team, the error-inducing conditions of their workplace (the bridge), and the organisational processes behind them – following Reason’s (1997) model of organisational accident. An organisational accident is a rare, but often catastrophic, event that occurs within complex organisations as a product of technological innovation. Working under a hypothesis built on publicly available data till July 2012, the grounding of Costa Concordia appears to be an organisational accident. The major aspects within Cannery Row are loneliness, suicide and the development of characters. In the story Cannery Row, loneliness can be considered a major aspect of this book. Loneliness describes many of the characters in this narrative- especially the character Doc. Although Doc is much loved by his peers and has many friends, he is lonely. He spends most of his time listening to music on the phonograph. The text explains that “'He was a dark and lonesome looking man' No one loved him. No one cared about him” (Steinbeck 6). This statement creates a sense of sympathy for the character. One of Steinbeck’s anecdotes at the end of the story is about a gopher who has created the perfect home similar to Doc. We are doing this essay now because it coincides nicely with our reading of The Odyssey. My point is that as we read about this ancient and, I believe, still relevant hero I want you to think and write about someone who is a hero to you. This should be a fun assignment. These two pieces are alike and different in many ways. I can agree and disagree on the survival methods used by both authors, although Crane’s methods seemed a bit more questionable. While nature seemed to toy with the crew of the boat in “The Open Boat”, the old man in “To Build a Fire” seems to toy with nature by ignoring its signs to stop and to relinquish his failing journey. In the following paragraphs I’d like to get into the trenches of these two adventure stories. These two authors share similar traits when it comes to connections and reasons for writing these stories. Stephen Crane wrote “The Open Boat” based on a real life experience he went through. It was on December 31, 1896 when Crane left the Florida panhandle en-route for Cuba. His mission was to cover the war as a correspondent. On January 2, his ship sank and he and the other three crew members were forced to make the rest of the 30 hour trip in a small dinghy back to the United States (SN). ...I DIDN’T DO IT Abstract This report is comprised of the three primary values/virtues I believe an Ethical leader should poses in the modern business marketplace. 1. Diligence 2. Reliability 3. Forbearance With each of these values I have argued my position using examples of real life incidents where a single decision lead to tragedy. The research was conducted mainly through legally produced documents from each incidents inquiry into the events which caused each independent situation. I have used moral theory to relate these situations to modern business ethics, this gives practical application to ethical decision making and leadership skills. The summation of findings concludes that the values and virtues required of an ethical leader is far more extensive than I originally thought and is not limited to the primary three that I have chosen to argue. Major financial tragedies like the 2008 financial crisis, can only be attributed to unethical decision making.
