In schools across America, young men and women swoon as they read Romeo and Juliet for the first time. The girls wish for a boy like Romeo to spot them in a crowded room and instantly fall in love, and even though they would never admit it, young men probably wish for the same. Even the students who scoff at Romeo’s flowery language and the dramatic irony secretly wish for the kind of overwhelming passion Romeo and Juliet share. However, the same students tend to overlook the warning Shakespeare has within the first page of the play. In the prologue, Shakespeare writes that Romeo and Juliet tells the tale of two families with such an intense hatred toward each other that it takes a child from each of the families committing suicide for the …show more content…
Too swift arrives as tardy as too slow" (2.6.9-15). While the Friar does not think good things will come from the marriage, as proven when he says he hopes the heavens are happy with Romeo and Juliet’s marriage so nothing unfortunate happens to make them regret their decision (2.6.1-2). Once again, Romeo ignores intuition and instead goes with what he is feeling and tells Friar Lawrence no matter what misfortunes come from his marriage, nothing can take away the joy Juliet brings him and “love-devouring death” can do whatever it pleases so long as Romeo can call Juliet his wife (2.6.3-8). At this point, Romeo is letting his passion overcome reason so much that Jesus Christ himself could come down from Heaven telling him if he married Juliet, the world would end and Romeo would ignore him and continue with the …show more content…
Romeo and Juliet had quite a few chances to hold off on their marriage, or even run away together. Instead, they let themselves be overcome by their passions and senses which ultimately leads to their downfall, just as stated by many Renaissance thinkers. Romeo and Juliet is bittersweet, that much is true; two young people believed their love was so true they would rather die than live without each other. However, readers overlooking the tragic portion of the play is ludicrous. Teenagers should not be swooning over Romeo and Juliet’s love; they were reckless and destructive in their decisions and lied to their families. What good came from their relationship? What aspects of their relationship can be used to exemplify the “perfect relationship” people strive for? Romeo and Juliet is the story of two vindictive families humbling themselves, not the guidebook for a functional

Friar Lawrence In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet

...Friar Lawrence’s plan for Juliet to escape from Verona and Paris to live with Romeo by faking her death. He gave her a potion that will make her appear dead for three days, long enough for her to avoid her wedding to Paris and be placed in her family tomb. It is there where she will awake to find Romeo waiting for her so they can live happily together in Mantua. I think Juliet trusts Friar Lawrence because of the fact that he agreed to marry Romeo and Juliet in secret. Because of this, Friar would be executed if he wed Juliet to Paris as he already marrying Juliet twice while Romeo is still alive. Juliet trusts him because if he doesn’t help her out of this situation he will be executed and his soul will be damned for doing such a thing. Juliet...

Free Will In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet

...Romeo and Juliet Fate or Free-Will Fate is defined as “a powerful force that is believed to control what happens in the future.” In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet we are able to see how the theme of fate is cleverly infiltrated through events and dialogue throughout the play. Fate is mainly evident through the actions of Lord Capulet’s Servingman, Friar John, the timing of Romeo and Juliet’s death, and how the Montague’s and Capulet’s feud and been put to rest due to the tragedy in their lives. The first fated event was introduced to us in Act I Scene II, when Lord Capulet after finishing his conversation with Paris, regarding his request to marry Juliet, handed over a list of names to the Servingman and orders him to: [Rom....

...Conor Casey 9-10-13 Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet Paper Fate in Romeo and Juliet In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, fate is a key theme that is present throughout the play. The “star-crossed” lovers Romeo and Juliet, cannot stop fate from taking its course, and are unaware of the implications that it will have on them. In Romeo and Juliet, the young lovers find their untimely ends through the hands of fate. At the onset of the play the chorus enters and begins the play with a prologue. Introducing the reader to what is going on, the chorus talks of Romeo and Juliet saying, “A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life; / Whose misadventured piteous overthrows / Doth with their death bury their parent’s strife” (Prologue.7-8). Starting the play with this type of foreshadowing shows that this relationship is doomed by fate from the start. Fate by definition is the determining cause by which things are believed to come to be (Merriam-Webster). Fate in this play favors the Romeo and Juliet’s demise, opposed to their potential future. Romeo alludes to a feeling he has on the way to the Capulet ball saying, “I fear, too early: for my mind misgives Some consequences yet hanging in the stars Shall bitterly begin his fearful date With this night’s revels and expire the term Of a despised life closed in my breast By some vile forfeit of untimely death. (1.4.106-111) Another reference to the stars is made, as if some uncontrollable and higher entity is controlling...

Friar was the one that agreed to marry them because it could possibly end the feuding between the two families; he did not only take part in their romance he encouraged it which makes him the main attribute to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet

...tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is that of choice. The main question is do the characters have the ability to choose what they want, or are their fates simply left to destiny? There are many pieces of evidence of fate in the play, which greatly affect the plot and characters. Fate is the dominating force that foreshadows the ironic destinies of that protagonist, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. Fate is evident from the very beginning of the play. In the opening prologue it states that Romeo and Juliet “Are a pair of star-crossed lover/…Death marked/…[and] with their death bury their parents stifle”(6-9), which foreshadows their doom and ironically ends their parent’s feud. People say that when the stars are allied lovers meet and fall in love; however, with these two star crossed lovers their stars lined up and than crossed. Showing that the stars and universe are controlling the aspect of their life and are a metaphor for fate. The characters believe that their lives are controlled by destiny and luck, and Romeo is a prime example of this philosophy. When Romeo and his friends go to the Capulet’s ball, Romeo hesitates to go because he has had a bad dream: My mind misgives Some consequences, yet hanging in the sky Shall bitterly begin this fearful date With this night revels and expire the term Of a despised life closed, in my breast By some vile forfeit of untimely death (1, 4, 116-121). Addiction In Romeo And Juliet

...in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses metaphors and details through the characterization of Paris, Juliet, and Romeo in order to reveal the theme of how love is an addiction, it is an obsession and people make quick decisions without thinking because of love. Shakespeare incorporates many characters in his play in order to portray how love is so overpowering that it causes the characters apathy towards life to incline. Friar Laurence

...the marriage and consequential death of dear and Juliet. I was deeply involved in this tragedy and was harshly judged to be banished, now I plead to you, the High Court of Verona, to listen and understand my wishes for clemency and consider for me to continue my gracious devoted work at St Peter’s Church. I have heard the confession of many confided lovers in eternal dances, and two star crossed lovers who, were named Romeo and Juliet, were not different. The only wall that held the lovers apart was the century old grudge between the two great houses of Montague and Capulet. I was cautious at first; unknown to me was the treacherous mistake I was making on an early Monday morning. But as a member of a mendicant Christian religious order, I was obliged to help a civilian drowning in love. But not only was Romeo a sole civilian, but the son of Lord Montague and Lady Montague, in love with the one and only daughter of Lord Capulet and Lady Capulet. My thoughts were on the face that how fast Romeo forgot about Rosaline, I told Romeo, (God rest all Christian souls!) “Young men’s love then lies, not truly in their eyes, but in their eyes”. But I knew this wasn’t the case for Juliet, I knew that Romeo was speaking from his heart. I was more than just a priest for Romeo; I stood to him to more of a father-like figure. I had known Romeo since he was still in the hands of his mother. From his littlest problems to his love of his life, Romeo had chosen me to be there for him. The several...

Romeo

...Light Over Dark: The Choice Romeo and Juliet Didn’t Make The purpose of the light/dark motif in Romeo and Juliet is to show how Romeo and Juliet are unable to tell light from dark, or good from bad. I think everyone has the potential to distinguish what choices lead to “light” and what choices keep them in the “dark”. So Romeo and Juliet had that potential but I don’t think they wanted to know about that, since nothing else mattered to them but them. In this play, Romeo and Juliet do never make a clear choice of light over dark because they almost do not want to deal that decision in the middle of their romantic journey. They could have brought their situation which was becoming more of a mess each day, into the light by talking openly about it. However that would’ve ended the feud between the families that would have to be dealt with in some way and I’m sure Romeo and Juliet would not have lost their lives doing that. By ignoring their responsibilities and ignoring the darkness that was rising on them quickly both Romeo and Juliet allow tragedy to take them both. In the first scene, Romeo is depressed because his love for Rosaline is a one-way love. His parents are worried because Romeo spends all his time in the dark. Even when it is light, he shrouds himself in darkness to reflect his dreary mood: Away from the light steals home my heavy son / And private in his chamber pens himself / Shuts up his windows, locks fair daylight out / And makes himself an artificial night (I...
