Elias: Anim na pung taon ang nakakaraan nang maglingkod ang aking nuno sa bahay ng isang mangangalakal na kastila. Isang gabi, nasunog ang bahay.

Elias: Ang sunog ay nakatupok ng malaking halaga. Hinanap ang may sala at ang aking nuno ang siyang isinakdal.

Babae: (umiiyak) Hahanap tayo ng paraan asawa ko, upang mapawalang sala ka. Kukuha tayo ng magaling na abogado at—

Nuno: (hinawakan ang kamay ng asawa) Saan tayo kukuha ng pera? Mahirap lamang tayo, walang maipambayad.

Babae: Ngunit…

Nuno: (umiling) Wala na tayong magagawa. (close curtain)

scene 4 -bundok background- (pisi, kabayo, latigo) SF: yapak ng kabayo, tunog ng latigo.

Narrator: Nahatulan ang nuno ni Elias. Siya’y ipinaseo sa lansangan na nakagapos at pinagpapalo sa bawat panukulan ng daan. (nasasaktan sa bawat palo. Nawalan ng malay ang nuno)

Elias: Nagkasakit siya at nang gumaling ay namundok sila. Nanganak ang babae ngunit namatay ang sanggol. Ilang buwang lumipas, nagbigti siya nang hindi na niya matiis ang kanyang kasawian.

Babae: (napatakip sa bibig nang makita ang asawa na nakalambitin at patay na) Asawa ko!

Elias: Ilang buwan din ay nanganak ng sanggol na lalaki ang asawa. Ang panganay na anak ay tinawag na Balat na kilalang kilabot. Ang ina ay nakilala sa tawag na Delingkuwente at napalo. Ang bunso dahil sa mabait ay tinawag lamang na anak ng ina. Isang araw, nakita ng anak ang ina na patay na. Sinundan niya ang mga mata nito at nakita nito ang pugot na ulo ng kanyang kapatid. -close curtain-

Elias:Tumakas siya at napadpad sa Tayabas. Umibig siya sa anak ng isang mayaman. Nabuntis ang babae at nanganak ng kambal ngunit agad rin siyang binawian ng buhay. At isa sa kambal na iyon ay ako. Masaya kaming namuhay ng aking kapatid at siya’y ikakasal na sana ngunit nalaman ang tunay na pagkatao ng aking ama. Iniwan ng lalaki ang aking kapatid at nagpakasal sa iba. Nakilala namin ang aming ama ngunit siya’y namatay rin. Naging malungkot ang aking kapatid at nawala. Anim na buwang lumipas, natagpuan siyang patay. At ako ay nagpagala-gala na.

Narrator: Inilihis ni Elias ang usapan. Nagpalitan sila ng mga salita hanggang sa makarating sila sa baybayin.

Elias: Limutin niyo na ako at huwag pansinin saan mang lugar magtagpo.

Narrator: Samantala, isang kalbaryo naman ang nangyari kay Linares , na pinsan ni donya Victorina nang makatanggap ng sulat mula rito. Sabi doon na sasabihin lahat nito ang lihim niya at hindi siya bibigyan ng pera kung hindi niya hahamunin ang Alperes sa isang labanan.

Linares: (sa sarili) Ano ang aking gagawin? Bakit ba naman kasi ako nagsinungaling! Ano na lang ang sasabihin ni Maria ‘pag nalaman niya ang sekreto ko?

Narrator: Nasa ganoong pagmumuni-muni si Linares (namuproblema) nang dumating si padre Salvi at nag-usap silang tatlo ni kapitan Tiyago. -

Salvi: Ako’y may balita. Nakatanggap ako ng liham mula sa Maynila. Kung hihingi lamang si Ginoong Ibarra ng tawad kay padre Damaso ay magiging maayos na ang lahat.

Tiyago: Paano kung hindi siya patawarin?

Salvi: Si Maria Clara na ang bahala kung ganun.

Narrator: Sa gitna ng usapan nila, dumating si Ibarra at sila’y binati. -pumunta kay Sinang na nakaupo sa kilid-

Ibarra: Nasaan si Maria? (kausap si Sinang ) Siya ba’y may hinanakit sa akin?

Sinang: Hindi ko alam. Pinapasabi niya na siya’y limutin mo na.

Ibarra: Ibig ko siyang makausap.

Sinang: Pumunta ka sa bahay ng maaga bukas.

Ibarra: Sige (umalis na)

Narrator: Sa libingan may tatlong anino na nag-uusap...

Anino 1: Nakausap mo na ba si Elias?

Anino 2: Hindi pa pero sigurado akong aanib siya sa atin.

Lucas: Teka, may nakasunod yata sa akin. Tayo na’t maghiwalay at nang ating sasalakayin ang kuwartel ay sisigaw tayo ng: Viva! Don Crisostomo Ibarra! (dumating si Elias)

Lucas: Sino ka at anong ginagawa mo rito?

Elias: Ako’y naparito upang makipaglaro sa mga patay.

Narrator: Naglaro sila ng baraha at kung sino ang matalo ang siyang aalis.

Lucas: Ika’y natalo aking kaibigan.

Narrator:Si Elias na di umimik ay lumayo na’t nawala sa kadiliman.
(nakahiga si pilosopo tasyo sa higaan at si don Filipo ay nakaupo)

Narrator: Dumalaw si Don Filipo sa may sakit na si pilosopo Tasyo at kasalukuyang nag-uusap.

Pilosopo Tasyo: Di ko alam kung kayo ay aking babatiin sa iyong pagbitiw sa tungkulin. Ang puno ay kailangang manatili sa kanyang tungkulin.

Don Filipo: Siguro nga po kung ang heneral ay matapat at hindi pinakawala ang mga nahuli kong sibil.

Narrator: Patuloy sa pagbabatuhan ng mga opinion ang dalawa hanggang sa….

Don Filipo (pag-iiba ng usapan): Ibig ba ninyo ng gamot?

Pilosopo Tasyo (nadidismaya): Ang mga papanaw ay hindi nangangailangan ng gamot. Ang gamot ay para sa inyong maiiwan. Pakisabi nalang kay Ibarra na nais ko siyang makausap bukas at ako’y may sasabihin. (close curtain)

Narrator: Ang mga kampana ay tumutugtog upang ipahiwatig sa mga banal ang sandal ng orasyon. Isang kura ng sandaling iyon ay matuling naglalakad patungo sa bahay ng alperes.

Alperes (kasama ang asawa): Oh, Padre, kayo’y naparito.!?

Kura (Padre Salvi): Meron akong natuklasan (sabay bulong sa alperes). “Natuklasan ko na may isang malaking pag-aalsa na magaganap ngayong ika-walo ng gabi.”

Alperes (nagulat): Sige hihingi ako ng tulong sa ibang pangkat at ihahanda ko ang aking mga sibil.

Kura : Tama at padalhan niyo ako ng 4 na kawal sa kumbento.

Narrator : Sa kabilang banda, si Elias ay patakbong umakyat sa hagdan ng bahay ni Ibarra at pinatuloy ng isang utusan.

Ibarra (nagagalak) : O!, Elias, ikaw pala, tingnan mo itong…

Elias(natatakot): Kailangan niyo pong sunugin ang lahat ng mga kasulatang makapagtuturo sa inyo at magpakalayu-layo

Ibarra(nagtataka): Bakit?

Elias(nagpapaliwanag): May isang pag-aalsang mangyayari ngayong gabi at napag-alaman ko sa isang inupahan, na kayo raw ang ipinangangalandakang puno.

Ibarra (gulat na gulat): Ano?! Andyan ang lahat ng mg kasulatan

Narrator : Habang binabasa ni Elias ang mga kasulatang makapipinsala kay Ibarra ay meron siyang nakita.

Elias (nagtatanong): Kilala niyo ba si Pedro Eibarramiendia?

Ibarra: Oo, siya’y aking nuno. Pinaiksi lang naming ang aming apelyido

Elias: Kilala niyo ang taong ito?! Siya ang taksil na nagbintang sa aking nuno na naging sanhi ng aming kasawian (Tumakbo sa isang sisidlan ng may armas, kumuha ng balaraw at itinutok kay Ibarra ngunit agad namang binitiwan)

Elias(naguguluhan): Anong gagawin ko?! (tumatakbo palayo)

Narrator : Habang sabay kumakain si Kapitan Tiyago, Linares at Tiya Isabel, si Maria namay nakaupo sa tabi ng piyano kasama si Sinang sa gitna ng bulwagan

Sinang : Hindi aalis ang kura hanggang ika-walo ngunit sa ika-walo,Siya (Ibarra) ay darating (namutla si M.C)

Narrator : Nang matapos na ang pagdarasal ay dumating si Ibarra na putlang-putla. Agad namang tumindig si Maria Clara na parang may gustong sabihin… ngunit umalingawngaw ang putok ng baril.

Kap. T, Linares , T. Isabel: Tulisan! , Tulisan! (papasok ng bulwagan)

Alperes : (knocks) Padre kura, Padre Salvi! Parito kayo, wala ng dapat ikatakot.

Tiya Isabel: Kyrie Eleyson! Maria, Sinang pumasok kayo sa kuwarto. (nagmamadali)

Narrator: Si Ibarra’y umalis din, mabibigat ang kanyang paa at nagkandatisod-tisod na parang walang naramdaman. Nang makauwi ay agad siyang nag-alsa balutan. Ngunit tatlong katok ng pinto ang kanyang narinig.

Ibarra : Sino yan?(kumuha ng isang rebolber ngunit ito rin ay kanyang binitiwan)

Sibil : Buksan niyo ang pinto kundi ito’y aming sisirain (lumabas siya ng pinto at maayos siyang sumama)

Narrator : Mula ng umalis si Elias sa bahay ni Ibarra, tumakbo siya hanggang sa kagubatan at dalampasigan na naririnig ang alingawngaw ng mga sinawing-palad niyang nuno at kapatid. Ngunit ng makarating sa bayan ay dinala parin siya ng mga paa sa bakod ng bahay ni Ibarra, nilundag niya ito at umakyat sa bintana. Dito ay tinipon niya ang mga kasulatan ukol kay Ibarra.

Sibil: Bayaan niyo kaming pumanhik at kunin ang mga kasulatanan ng inyong amo.

Utusan: Meron ba kayong permiso mula sa kanya? (ngunit sinaktan lang siya ng mga ito)

Utusan 2: Sunog! Sunog!

scene 17 -
Narrator : Kinaumagahan, ang buong bayan ay nababalutan ng katahimikan dahil sa kaguluhang nangyari ng nagdaang gabi. Nagpasalin – salin sa bibig ng mga tao ang balita. Ang iba ay binabawasan at dinadagdagan.

Babae 1: Parang isang misa de gracia, kayraming putok ! Di daw 14 ang patay kundi 30

Babae 2: Higit pang marami kaysa noong luoban ni Balat ang bayan

Babae 3: Sanctus Deus! At ang sabi, gusto raw maghiganti at nagnanasang pumatay si Don Crisostomo ng mga Kastila dahil sa ipapakasal ni Kapitan Tiyagosi Maria Clara kay Linares. Ang bahay naman ng binata ay sinunog ng mga sibil.

Narrator: Sa kabilang dako naman ay balisa ang mga guwardiya sibil na nasa kwartel. Nadatnan ni Padre Salvi ang alperes at si Donya Consolacion.

Padre Salvi: Ang binatang Ibarra at ang tininti mayor?

Alperes: Walong katao ang nandiyan (sabay turo sa bilangguan). Ang nagngangalang Bruno ay patay na ngunit naitala na ang salaysay.

Narrator : Pumasok sila sa bilangguan kasama ang 4 pang sibil at pilit na pinaaamin si Tarsilo na kapatid ni Bruno

Alperes: Ano ang iyong pangalan? At ano ang mga ipinangako ni Ibarra sayo?

Tarsilo: Tarsilo Alasigan at Si Ibarra ay hindi kailanman nakipag-usap sa amin. Sumama ako sa paglusob sapagkat pinatay niyo ang aking ama (nanlilisik ang mata sa galit) At ninais ko siyang ipaghiganti.

Narrator: Dinala siya sa limang bangkay. Nakita niya ang asawa ni sisa na si Pedro, at dalawa pa, si Bruno na maraming saksak at si Lucas. (nanlalalim ang mga mata at napabuntong hininga)

Alperes: Nakikilala mo ba sila?

Narrator: Hindi umimik si Tarsilo kaya nagalit ang alperes. Ibinalik siya sa bulwagan at tinanong kung nakikilala niya ba ang nadatnang bilanggo.

Tarsilo: Ngayon ko pa siya nakita.

Narrator: Pinalo siya hanggang sa mabalot ng dugo ang buong katawan. Hindi nakayanan ng kura ang eksena kaya umalis ito. (Hinihingal ang sibil, ibinaba niya ang mga kamay)

Donya Consolacion: (tumindig) Dalhin siya sa balon.

Narrator: At dinala siya sa balong marumi at mabaho. Ang donya ay parang walang puso na napapangiti. Si Tarsilo ay idinabdab sa balon.

Tarsilo: Kung kayo’y may mga puso ay madaliin na ninyo ang aking kamatayan (marahang pakiusap) Marahil balang araw ay mangyayari rin sa inyo ang ginawa ninyo sa akin.

Narrator: Ilang beses ibinulusok ang katawan ni Tarsilo sa balon. Hindi niya natagalan ang pagpapahirap kaya siya’y namatay.

Narrator: Kinahapunan, ang mga tao’y balisang balisa sa labas ng kuwartel. Inaantay ang paglabas ng mg nabilanggo. At maya maya’y lumabas rin ang mga bilanggo sa pangunguna ni don Filipo.

Doray(humahagulgol): Asawa ko! (tumangkang yakapin ang asawa ngunit pinigilan ng mga sibil) (Nang lumbas si Ibarra na walang gapos ay kinutya siya ng mga tao)

Marami: Iyan! Iyan ang maysala! Ngunit siya pa ang hindi nakagapos!

M. ni Andong: Ang manugang ko na walang sala ay siya pang nakagapos!

Ibarra: Gapusin ninyo ako. (at ginapos siya.)

Doray: Crisostomo! (lumingon si Ibarra kay Doray) Ano ang ginawa ng aking asawa?! Tignan ninyo ang aking anak! Inalisan ninyo siya ng ama! (umiiyak at puno ng galit)

M. ni Andong: Isa kang duwag! Habang ang mga iba’y nakikipaglaban ng dahil sa iyo, ika’y nagtatago, duwag!

Lalaki 1: sumpain ka nawa!

Babae 1: Bibitayin ka sana erehe! (galit at binato si Ibarra)

Lalaki 2: Sumpain ka! Sumpain! (pinagbabato si Ibarra ng kung anu-ano habang nakayukod ang ulo. Wala ni isang nakiramay sa kanya kahit mga kakilala at kaibigan).

Narrator : Ng mga sandali ding ‘yun ay nalagutan ng hininga ang Pilosopong Tasyo sa daan habang nagpupumilit na makita si Ibarra.

Narrator: Nakarating sa Maynila ang nangyari sa San Diego. Sa isang bahay naman sa Tondo, hindi mapakali si Kapitan Tinong dahil minsan itong nagpakita ng kagandahang loob kay Ibarra. Kaya panay ang sisi sa kanya ng asawang si kapitana Tinchang.

Tinchang: Iyan na nga ba ang sinasabi ko sayo! Puro ka na lang kasi Ibarra. Kaya ngayo’y napapahamak ka!

Narrator: Malapit ng mabanas si Tinong sa asawa nang dumating si Don Primitivo na ipinasundo ni tinchang upang hingan ng payo.

Primitivo: Anong nangyayari?

Tinchang: Pinsan! ( lumapit at kumapit sa braso) Ano ang aming gagawin? Bigyan mo kami ng payo.

Primitivo: Magsadya ka sa Kapitan Heneral at bigyan siya ng regalo—sabihin mong isa itong pamasko.
Sunugin rin ang lahat ng mga liham, kasulatan at mga aklat upang walang matagpuan.

Narrator: Habang ito'y nangyayari sa bahay ni Tinong, si kapitan Tiyago naman ay tuwang-tuwa dahil hindi siya nahuli. Dumating sa bahay ni kapitan Tiyago sina Linares at mag-asawang de Espadaña. Pinag-usapan nila ang tungkol sa pagpapakasal nina Maria Clara at Linares .

Maria: Pagpaumanhin ninyo ngunit nais ko ng magpahinga. (nagbigay galang)

Narrator: Di naglaon ay umalis na ang mga de Espadaña at Linares . Nakikinita na ni kapitan Tiyago na siya’y kaiinggitan ng mga tao sapagkat siya’y makakapaglabas-masok sa palasyo sa sandaling maging manugang si Linares.

Kinabukasan, puno ang bulwagan ni kapitan Tiyago ng mga tao.Nang tumigil na ang kasiyahan ay nagtungo si Maria sa Asotea. Doon nakita niya si Ibarra na nakatakas sa tulong ni Elias. Pumanhik si Crisostomo at nag-usap sila. (nakayuko si Maria)

Ibarra: (nakatingin sa malayo) Ipinangako ko sa libingan ng aking ina na papaligayahin kita. Kaya… (tumingin dito) ngayo’y napaparito ako upang tuldukan ang ating sumpaan. Pinapatawad na kita sa iyong pagkukulang sa ating sumpa. Sana’y maging maligaya ka. (malungkot na ngumiti)

Narrator: Nang papaalis na si Crisostomo ay pinigilan siya ni Maria. Inilahad nito ang tunay na kasaysayan at pagkatao nito. Napilitan din umano itong talikuran ang kanilang pag-iibigan dahil sa ina at dalawang ama.

Ibarra: Matutuklasan ang aking pagtakas, Maria— (sinapupo ni Maria ang dalawang pisngi ni Ibarra at hinalikan) (lumuluha ang mukha ni Maria nang lumayo ang labi nito)

Maria: Lagi mo lamang pakakatandaan na mahal na mahal na mahal kita. Ikaw lamang ang aking iibigin magpakailanman. (sinapo ang bibig upang hindi tumakas ang hikbing namumutawi sa kanyang bibig) (Si Ibarra’y lalapit sana ngunit napatigil nang magsalita si Maria.)

Maria: Tumakas ka na, mahal ko. Tumakas ka na… at, paalam (sa mahinang pagkabigkas at ngumiti ng may kalungkutan)

Narrator: Lumundag na sa pader si Crisostomo at sumakay na sa bangka. Nag-alis ng sombrero si Elias at ito’y yumukod kay Maria. (napahagulgol na lamang si Maria)

Sa lawa, ay sumasagwan si Elias at nag-uusap sila ni Ibarra. Nagkwentuhan sila hanggang sa mapadaan sa tapat ng palasyo. Pinadapa si Crisostomo at tinakpan ng mga dahon. Nakalusot naman sila sa polvorista. Ngunit, nang mag-umaga ay nakita nila ang palwa ng mga sibil na papalapit sa kanila. Lumundag si Elias sa tubig. Pinaputukan si Elias ng mga sibil at nang makitang may dugo ang tubig ay inakala ng mga sibil na siya’y patay na kaya umalis na ang mga ito.

Narrator: Sa umaga, ang mga mata ni Maria ay nakapako sa diyaryong nagbabalita sa pagkamatay ni Crisostomo. Dumating si Padre Damaso at hiniling agad ni Maria na sirain ang kasal kay Linares. Isinalaysay din niya dito ang pakikipagkita ni Crisostomo sa kanya.

Maria: Ngayong patay na ang aking pinakamamahal ay wala na kong ibang lalaking pakakasalan. Ang kumbento na lang o ang kamatayan ang akin.

Damaso: Patawarin mo ako anak ko. Hindi ko alam na ako ang naging sanhi ng iyong kasawian. Ang iniisip ko lamang ang iyong kinabukasan, ang iyong kaligayahan. (napahagulgol na parang bata)

Maria: Kung ako po ay iyong minamahal hindi niyo ako pababayaang maging sawi habang buhay. Ibig ko pong magmongha.

Damaso: Ngunit..

Maria: (napailing) Ang kumbento o--- ang kamatayan!

Narrator: Walang nagawa si Padre Damaso kundi pahintulutang pumasok sa kumbento si Maria kaysa piliin nito ang kamatayan. (umalis na si Damaso, titingala siya sa langit)

Damaso: Totoo ka ngang Diyos na mapagparusa. Ngunit ako na lang… 'wag ang aking anak! Iligtas niyo po siya, panginoon ko.

Narrator: Pagkaraan ng ilang araw ay Noche Buena na ngunit ang mga taga- San Diego ay malungkot. Si Basilio ay umuwi para hanapin ang ina. Nang nakita niya ito ay kumaripas ito ng takbo, na kanya namang sinundan. Hindi niya inalintana kahit siya’y natamaan sa ulo ng isang bata at halos maligo ng dugo.

Basilio: Nanay!

Narrator: Pumasok ang kanyang ina sa pinto ng libingan ng matandang kastila na nasa tabi ng puno ng baliti. Nangunyapit siya sa puno at nagpatihulog . (napalingon si Sisa) Agad na niyakap niya ang ina hanggang sa mawalan ng ulirat. (tinignan ni Sisa ang noo ng bata, yumuko siya at may naalala)

Sisa: B-Basilio? Basilio, anak ko! (niyakap ang anak) (nawalan ng ulirat)

Narrator: Ang ina at ang anak ay nanatiling walang kagalaw-galaw. Nang magbalik ang ulirat ni Basilio at nakita ang ina, kumuha siya ng tubig at iwinasik dito. Ngunit, hindi gumalaw ang ina. (Dinaiti ang tenga sa dibdib ng ina)

Narrator: Sinikmal ng matinding pagkasindak si Basilio. Patay na ang kanyang ina, ang mahal niyang ina! (niyakap ng mahigpit si Sisa)

Basilio: N-Nanay? (napahagulgol) Nanay---! Hindi! (umiling) Hindi! (umiling) Hindi maaari! Na-nay!

Narrator: Nang mag-angat siya ng ulo ay nakita niya si Elias na nagmamasid sa kanya. Inutusan siya nito na silaban ang bangkay nito at ina niya, hanggang sa maging abo.

Elias: May nakatagong ginto dito, hukayin mo. Iyong-iyo na. Mag-aral ka! (lumayo na si Basilio) (tumingin sa silangan si Elias)

Elias: Mamamatay akong di man nakita ang maningning sa pagbubukang-liwayway sa aking Inang bayan! Kayong makakikita, batiin ninyo siya—at huwag kalimutan ang mga nilugmok sa dilim ng gabi. (tumingala sa langit at pagkatapos ay napayukayok ang ulo at unti-unting nabuwal sa lupa.) (si Basilio ay naghuhukay ng ginto, itinaas niya ang ginto)

-narrate-Katapusan
Si Maria Clara’y pumasok sa kumbento habang si Padre Damaso’y inilipat sa Padre Provincial ngunit namatay rin. Si Padre Salvi’y naging Obispo ng St. Clara. Ilang linggo naman bago naging ganap na mongha si Maria, si Kapitan Tiyago ay dumanas ng sapin-saping paghihirap ng damdamin, nangayayat ng husto, naging mapag-isip at nawalan ng tiwala sa mga kainuman. Ganap na siyang nalimot ng mga tao. Wala ni isa mang nakakaalala sa kanya, siya na isang tanyag at dating iginagalang. Nagdagdag ng mga kulot sa ulo si Donya Victorina upang mapagbuti ang pagbabalatkayo .Siya ngayon ang nangungutsero. Si Don Tiburcio ay hindi na rin siya natatawag bilang “doktor” para mag-gamot.

...Freedom Writers Self-concept is the entirety of one's beliefs and attitudes towards their personal existence. Many people, depending on life experience, feel they have superiority or are at a disadvantage because of the group they fall into. This is seen in the movie Freedom Writers, each and every student has their own perspective on their own self-concept. These students end up finding similarities between each other because they have some sort of connection but only find it once they learn and open up about their struggles. There are many concepts of the self that can be found throughout the entire film.   Empathy is one of the major concepts of The Freedom Writers.  Empathy is the ability to put yourself into another person’s experience and to completely understand the other’s thoughts, feelings and way of being. (P.78) An example of empathy is when Mrs. G reads the journals and can really put herself into their shoes and really understand their individual experiences.  If Mrs. G didn’t have a strong sense of empathy for the students, she never would have been able to help them conquer their personal demons.               Mrs. G used a strategy called identity management to connect with the students.  Identity management is when communicators use certain strategies to influence the way others view them. (P.81) An example of this is when Mrs. G plays Tupac in an effort to relate to the kids in the class.  She hopes to have them see that they may have something in common...
