The Great Gatsby is solely oriented around the fact that the American Dream, embodied in the ideal of the self-made man, was a corrupt piece of American history. Nick Carraway, the narrator, helps give the reader a better look into the lives of those living amongst the chaos within New York, specifically those who live on the Long Island Sound. ...Death of the American Dream What is the “American Dream”? Does everybody have the same dream; does everybody want the same thing? Does everyone who tries for his or her dream achieve it? This unit we have read and discussed different literature that has dealt with aspects of the “American Dream”. Two of those texts that have had the most impact on me personally and my vision of my dream were “Death of a Salesman” by Arthur Miller and “Winter Dreams” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. These two pieces of literature deal with aspects of each of the main characters pursuit of what they feel is their “American Dream”. It’s safe to say that both of these depictions end in a sorrowful way; with both of the main characters realizing that their dream won’t be fulfilled. Both of these authors show how the typical American Dream of having wealth and glory won’t bring one true contentment; it is this aspect of the “American Dream” that both of the main characters of the stories strive to attain. It seems that with every greedy aspiration for the “American Dream” comes unfulfilled lives and missed experiences; for this is what happens to Dexter Green in “Winter Dreams” and Willy Loman in “Death of a Salesman”. ...The Great Gatsby: The Deception of Money It is strikingly obvious that obscene amounts money does not guarantee happiness. Many people foolishly shape their lives around attaining ultimate wealth in hopes that it will bring endless happiness. This is the tragic case of the characters in Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. Daisy, Tom, and Gatsby exemplify the American dream, living what appears to be an extravagant life. Ironically, what they imagined will bring them fulfillment in life, money, has done just the opposite. Under the enchanting lights, parties, and monstrous mansions lies a deep feeling of melancholy and depression well hidden from the surface. Even though they have everything money can buy, the three primary characters in The Great Gatsby prove that, ultimately, money leaves its victims in a void of unhappiness. Tom Buchanan lives in extreme wealth but is ultimately unhappy as he tries to fulfill the void in his life by having an affair. Tom has all the ingredients to live a fulfilling life; a family, the fancy mansion, and of course, the money. Yet he stills feels incomplete. Nick, the narrator of the story, is not surprised that Tom has “some woman in New York” and notices that “Tom would drift on forever seeking, a little wistfully, for the dramatic turbulence of some irrecoverable football game” (6, 20). ...Field of Dreams Synopsis of reviews/articles written about the film Based on the review written by Roger Ebert (Ebert, 1989) The farmer Ray Kinsella is in the middle of his cornfield when he first begins hearing voices “If you build it, he will come.” Prior to the farmer hearing voices, Field of Dreams is a sensible film about a young couple who want to run a family farm in Iowa. When the voice speaks for the first time the audience is stumped with the thought of this movie turning into a religious based film. The movie develops a fantasy when farmer Ray understands the voice wants him to build a baseball field in the middle of his corn crops so Shoeless Joe Jackson (deceased) can materialize out of the Corfield and come play there. The movie prudently does not try to explain the strange events that happen after the field is built, it depends on a poetic vision to make its point. A specific speech in the movie describes baseball in a simple and true way, which ultimately describes the goal of the players who emerge from the cornfield, which is to simply play they game they love. The believable relationship created by the young couple Ray and Annie develops the theme that love means sharing your loved one’s dreams. Field of Dreams will not appeal to realists, it is made up of fantasies but stays true to what the plot promises, “if you build it, he will come.” Shoeless Joe Jackson does not return from the dead to save the world, but to answer the cry of a baseball legend....
