GARDENIA CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: ENRICHING LIVES

Aside from our vision to become the premier company in the baking industry, Gardenia aims to be of service to the Filipino society, contributing to its welfare and development through different worthwhile activities in four categories namely health, education, livelihood and environment.

Daily Bread: Reaching out to the less fortunate
The Daily Bread Program is integrated into the company’s strategy as breads pulled out from supermarkets or outlets every day of delivery to guarantee freshness are being donated to foundations, while others are converted into fish meals. Through the Daily Bread Program, Gardenia is able to help curb malnutrition in the country. Gardenia is providing almost 10,000 loaves weekly to different sectors including special children, disabled person, out-of-school youth, public school pupils, battered women, indigents, prisoners, and many others for years now.
Gardenia prioritizes helping organizations catering to poor children in an aim to educate and mold them to be responsible and productive citizens of the country. And of course, while learning, children have to be adequately fed so they can absorb lessons better. They’re also more attentive and active in class when they’re not hungry. e-CSR: Quickly responding to victims of calamities
Likewise, Gardenia partners with Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), GMA Kapuso Foundation, ABS-CBN Foundation and other reputable organizations to promptly serve victims of calamities like floods, typhoons and fires. During the worst flooding in decades brought by Typhoon Ondoy that affected Metro Manila and surrounding provinces on September 2009, Gardenia worked with relief organizations to provide basic goods especially bread to the victims.
During the Typhoon Sendong in 2011, Gardenia donated thousands of breads and canned good products to the flood victims in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan. Apart from breads, most Gardenia employees donated one day of their salary to the victims through Philippine Red Cross.
HEALTH: Health is wealth
Gardenia imprints to the mind of every individual the importance of good health by conducting free nutrition counseling in various supermarkets and offices. They extended this to different schools through the School Nutri-tour which aims to teach the kids to incorporate proper eating habit with an active lifestyle while they are still young and hopefully practice the habit, as they grow older.
Moreover, Gardenia partners with organizations that conduct medical/dental missions in different depressed areas to provide free medical consultations and medicines.
Gardenia promotes employees’ participation in its CSR activities. Fit employees are encouraged to donate bloods to blood banks (Red Cross and St. Lukes). Through this manner, employees are able to reach out to the needy and even save lives, especially during outbreaks (e.g. dengue). Donating bloods is also good for employee’s health as this help them rejuvenate their blood.
LIVELIHOOD: PROVIDING ADDITIONAL SOURCE OF INCOME
"If you give a person a fish they will eat for one day but if you teach them how to fish they will eat for a lifetime."Gardenia provides livelihood programs such as Territorial Distributorship (TD) and pedicart program to provide self-employment and/or additional source of income.
Developed to help the unemployed or recently laid off workers during the global crisis, the Gardenia Pedicart is for those who wish to venture in micro-entrepreneurship, marketing fast selling Gardenia bread products primarily house-to-house. With this livelihood program, one can earn at least P300-P350 for a half day’s work, and double the income with a second round in the afternoon or early evening. The company provided the pedicarts for free and supplied the bread daily for sale by the vendor.
The Territorial Distribution program encouraged housewives and OFWs to invest on distribution entrepreneurship without any franchise fees generating additional income.
Livelihood programs are being offered to Gardenia employees for them to augment their income. Seminars on making candle, beads, soaps, sandwiches and others are being conducted to employees and their dependents.
EDUCATION: Creating a Major Educational Plant Tour Destination in the Philippines
Gardenia also has another method of social service--its free-of-charge plant tours. It welcomes students of all levels, parents, professionals and even community organizations to visit its world class plant facility in Mamplasan, Binan, Laguna. The plant was designed to include guided catwalk tours to see modern baking untouched by hand, creating an educational and enjoyable experience for visitors. It orients visitors not only on its unique bread manufacturing process, but also on a healthy lifestyle.
The plant is currently toured by as much as 3,000 to 8,000 visitors per day, making Gardenia one of the leading educational plant tour destinations in the country. Incorporated the plant tour is the brief lecture values education through Rotary 4-way test, the value of sanitation practices and healthy eating/nutrition.
ENVIRONMENT: GREEN PRACTICES, ENCOURAGING OTHERS TO FOLLOW
With the increasing concern on our environment, Gardenia assures that its practices and processes are not harmful to the environment. It uses LPG in baking to ensure no air pollutants escape to the environment. It treats all water using its Waste Water Facility before discharging used water to the sewers: Its practices and recycling programs, and garbage segregation programs are also communicated to thousands of plant tour visitors to spread the consciousness on environmental protection.
Gardenia’s extensive reach is evident not only in selling its breads, but also in serving the community to enrich the lives of every individual. Its multi-faceted CSR is something that we can expect for years to come. | | | | | |

Space for Love: Nature's Domain

...help suit generations. Literature has played a key role in the changing of these places. Although each writer’s interpretation of love-like settings may differ from one another, there are very basic similarities between them. Tradition has made it so that nature is almost always involved in these, “Spaces for Love.” Also, traditionally we would expect love between opposite sexes but there is tremendous amounts of literature written now that involve love between the same sexes. My goal in this essay is to show that through the change in old and more recent literature nature has been key in traditional views of love settings/places. To reach this goal, I’ll be using and comparing quotes from the bible’s Song of Songs and Paul Monette’s Gardenias to show how nature has always been an important part of places for love. Starting with Song of Songs, it is said to have been written by King Solomon himself but it is also believed to be a compilation of Arabic wasfs that were translated into Hebrew. It was first published in English in 1611 in the King James Version of the Bible. The idea of love being heterosexual is represented very clearly and the concept of nature plays a huge part in this love story. There are so many references to fruits and plants and a clear distinction of man and woman. “As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.” (Song of Sol. 2:3) In this...

...ACHIEVEMENTS Gardenia’s success began rather humbly. Gardenia Bakeries Malaysia rolled out the first loaf from its production lines in 1986. In a span of four years, it became the leading bread supplier with a 99% brand and 80% top-ofmind recall. Malaysia’s increasing demand for fresh and nutritious bread convinced Gardenia to invest in its own fully automated factory in 1991, constructed with a 6,000 loaves an hour capacity. In 1994, an additional state-of-theart plant, capable of producing 10,000 loaves an hour, commenced operations to meet the rising demand for bread. Today, Gardenia’s five factories, each with six fully automated bread lines, produce more than 900,000 fresh loaves a day, making it the largest bread producer in Southeast Asia. Attestations of Gardenia’s unrelenting efforts in maintaining the integrity of its products are found in its ISO 22000:2005 certification, Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) certification, Highly Commended Product Award by Malaysian Institute of Food Technologies (MIFT), and a National Creativity and Innovation Award. Gardenia’s accomplishments have sent reverberations throughout the industry, even winning the respect of enormous corporations like Padi Beras Nasional. Gardenia achieved the Universal Integrated System ISI 2020 certification from the Research Institute of Standards in Islam in 2005. In terms of Superbrand accolades, the brand garnered the Superbrands Award for three consecutive...

Plant Tours

...Technological University of the Philippines COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS Ayala Boulevard, San Marcelino Street, Ermita, Manila PLANT TOUR 2013 (Villar Foundation, Hino, and Gardenia) Submitted to: Dr. Noel B. Hernandez Submitted by: Evangelista, Kris Lianne N. BAM IM 4L E October 12, 2013 PLANT TOUR 2013 (Villar Foundation, Hino, and Gardenia) I. INTRODUCTION Plant tour is define as a visit to a place (such as museum, warehouses, factory, etc.) that is made by the school or professors for their students to learn about something. Plant visit allows students to build a better understanding of a site’s or plant’s performance potential; to assess a competitor, to communicate the company’s performance, strategy, and current challenges. Even people who know that plant tours are valuable can find it difficult to put them to effective use. First, unclear objectives often turn touring into tourism. If visitors don’t know why they are taking a tour and what they hope to accomplish on it, they won’t know where to focus their time and effort. Second, many people lack an organizing framework to structure observations and accelerate learning. Without such a framework, the myriad observations made during a tour cannot easily weave together and will not readily yield general conclusions. Third, information about plants and how to tour them is inevitably comparative; and those who have seen more, see more. Inexperience makes it difficult for younger...

Market Research

...Market Research Q) Explain, with examples, the steps in the research process that could be adopted by marketers in Malaysia. A) Basically market research can be summarized as below: Define Problem  Design research methodology  Collect Data  Analysis + Conclusion  Presentation of Result + Recommendation High5 bread is certainly commonly consumed by Malaysians in the past decades. Unfortunately, it seems that this brand is overpowered by its competitors namely Massimo and Gardenia. A sound market research has to begin with defining the problem. For this case, the problem would be the decreasing sales of High5. Subsequently, a research methodology should be designed with consideration on cost of research, accessibility to resources, target market, relevance of data to be collected as well as other significant factors. For example, High5 could carry out survey in the supermarket to collect the data on the impression or opinions on High5, ranking of preferences (Massimo, Gardenia, High5,etc..), and reasons for not choosing High5. Once the data is collected, analysis would be carried out to conclude the main reason why consumers are choosing other brands. For instance, the reasons may be the texture of the bread, overall impression of the brand, or the price compared to its competitors. Once the conclusion is drawn, the result can be presented to the top management along with recommendation or corrective measure that could be taken or implemented in the marketing...

The UCLA housing matching is a 10-13 day process in which the housing system categorizes students into three groups that include returning students, freshmen students and transfer students, and match them with various buildings and rooms based on their declared preferences on their housing applications. The UCLA Housing Services surveys on the assignment preference to identify the three important preference criteria for best housing matching, which are Facility/Room Type, Roommate Requests, and Lifestyle Preferences. Legal Feasibility

...Legal feasibility To successfully develop The Hearty Meal in McDonald’s Malaysia, it is vital that the production of this meal must abide the rules and regulations of Malaysia. First of all, McDonald’s must acquire a trademark for The Hearty Meal to distinguish it from any other fast food meal in the industry. Trademark is a symbol, word that is legally registered to represent a company or product. A trademark should be given to The Hearty Meal as it is a new product that is modified from the Happy Meal. Besides getting a trademark, it is compulsory that the Hearty Meal must be Halal certified by JAKIM as Malaysia is a Muslim country. Halal certified food will prove that this meal is suitable for the consumption of all religion in Malaysia especially the Muslims. On top of that, the quality of The Hearty Meal is assured for it is known that the meat that is supplied to McDonald’s fast food chain is ISO9001: 2000 certified and also awarded the Veterinary Health Mark by the Department of Veterinary Services. There must be food safety management systems in place that includes Quality Assurance Program (QAP), a verified Hazard Analysis Control Point (HACCP) plan and a crisis management as well as food security programs.
