...CR TOPIC-WISE EXERCISES (700-800 LEVEL) 1 The 700-800 Club Critical Reasoning Critical Reasoning Topic 1: CONCLUSION 1. • • • • • 2. In the United States, about $5,200 per person per year is spent on health care, while in Britain the amount is about half that. A recent study indicated that middle-aged white Americans have a significantly higher rate of diabetes and heart disease than do middle-aged white Britons. Even after eliminating from the study the lifestyle differences of diet, exercise, smoking, and drinking, the data showed that the Americans have poorer health than their British counterparts. The statements above, if true, best support which of the following assertions? Health care spending in the United States should be reduced by 50%. More expensive health care causes a higher incidence of certain diseases. The money spent on health care in the United States is not being used effectively. The average health care spending for middle-aged white Americans is probably less than the average health care spending for Americans in general. Something other than diet, exercise, smoking, and drinking must account for the difference in health for the two groups in the study. ...Article summary for Tom Kennedy and John Affleck-Graves on The Impact of Activity-Based Costing Techniques on Firms Performance Janetha Brown This article discusses how a management accounting system like activity-based costing (ABC) may or may not have a significant impact on a firm’s value. With the samples that are shown, it is proven that the companies that use an ABC technique outperform other companies that don’t use an ABC technique by 27% over a three year period. It also shows that using an ABC technique will add value to the firm through better cost control and asset utilization. Because it had never really been proven that an ABC process really does bring an increase in shareholder value through increased profits, it is being reviewed here. The primary purpose of this article is to see if the many documented successful case study implementations of ABC are, on average, translated into superior stuck performance. (Kennedy and Affleck-Graves, 2001, p. 20) A sample of firms that do adopt ABC and some that don’t is gathered to do a comparison of the two. Comparing the ABC adopted firms to its counterparts for three years, it is revealed they have a 61% return for the ABC adopting firms compared to 34% return for the non-adopting firms which is a 5% difference. Other factors could play a role in the superior performance but when comparing other factors between the companies, nothing significant is found to stand out. The next section discusses several difference cases...

...Breaking down a Long GMATPrep SC problem A student recently asked me what they should do when faced with Sentence Correction problems containing very long underlines and a “jumble” in the answer choices. Many sentence correction questions can easily be scanned vertically, in order to find differences among the answers. But in some problems, major parts of the sentence move around and the basic structure changes (for instance, an independent clause becomes dependent and vice versa). If you’re a Manhattan GMAT student, we would classify these kinds of questions as ones for which the “splits” are more challenging to identify. This week and next we’re going to analyze a couple of GMATPrep^ Sentence Correction questions that possess these characteristics. (Note: click here to read about the general process of attacking Sentence Correction questions; the techniques we discuss in this current article are to be used only when necessary.) Here’s today’s problem; set your timer for 1 minute and 15 seconds and go! ...700+ GMAT Problem Solving Probability and Combinations Questions With Explanations Collected by Bunuel Solutions by Bunuel gmatclub.com 1. Mary and Joe are to throw three dice each. The score is the sum of points on all three dice. If Mary scores 10 in her attempt what is the probability that Joe will outscore Mary in his? A. 24/64 B. 32/64 C. 36/64 D. 40/64 E. 42/64 Expected value of a roll of one dice is 1/6(1+2+3+4+5+6)=3.5. Expected value of three dices is 3*3.5=10.5. Mary scored 10 so the probability to have more then 10, or more then average is the same as to have less than average=1/2. P=1/2. Answer: B. Discussed at: http://gmatclub.com/forum/mother-mary-comes-to-me-86407.html 2. Denise is trying to open a safe whose combination she does not know. IF the safe has 4000 possible combinations, and she can try 75 different possibilities, what is the probability that she does not pick the one correct combination. A. 1 B. 159/160 C. 157/160 D. 3/160 E. 0 When trying the first time the probability Denise doesn't pick the correct combination=3999/4000 Second time, as the total number of possible combinations reduced by one, not picking the right one would be 3998/3999. Third time 3997/3998 ... And the same 75 times. So we get: [pic] every denominator but the first will cancel out and every nominator but the last will cancel out as well. We'll get 3925/4000=157/160. Answer: C. Discussed at: http://gmatclub.com/forum/4000-possible-combination-84435...

If Nancy works more than 3 days per week, any extra days are paid at double her normal rate. Nancy worked 4 weeks with no overtime, and then worked 3 more weeks, each with y days of overtime. Which of the following represents Nancy’s total earnings over this period? ○○ ○○ ○○ ○○ ○○ 3y(7x 1 2xy) 3x 1 12y 3xy(7x 1 2) 3x(2y 1 7) 4x(y 1 8) Step 1: Analyze the Question We’ve got a wordy question stem and variables in the answer choices, so we can make this question more concrete and manageable through Picking Numbers. Step 2: State the Task We need to determine Nancy’s total earnings over a seven-week period, including four regular three-day weeks and three weeks during which she worked overtime days. Step 3: Approach Strategically We need two values, so let’s set x 5 5 and y 5 2. (Note that it’s a good idea to avoid 3 and 4 when Picking Numbers for this question, since those numbers appear in the question itself and may cause confusion later when we substitute the values into the answer choices.) There are two distinct parts of...
