Health Hazards from Keyboarding

Abstract

The topic of this paper is on Health Hazards caused by the use of a keyboard, areas of discussion will include types of germs, and sanitation solutions.

Introduction
The Health Hazards from Keyboarding are many, however, the author has chosen to discuss infectious bacterium for this paper, how germs contaminate and transfer from person to person, and what solutions for sanitation can be effective.

Germs

Keyboards can be highly contaminated with a variety of different germs, the most popular place to find these germs are on hospital keyboards. In hospitals, "computer keyboards are vectors for disease," states Elizabeth McCaughey, a former lieutenant governor of New York who heads the Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths, a New York-based nonprofit group that advocates for cleaner and safer hospitals. McCaughey states that the bacterium on hospital keyboards can spread the hard to treat staph infection, called Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). This bacterium has also been known to cause pneumonia, as well as, infections in the blood stream. Another common place to find these germs are in offices, a recent test was conducted in an office in the United Kingdom by British microbiologist, James Francis, who took a swab to 33 keyboards, a toilet seat, and a toilet door handle. After testing the swabs, he found that four of the keyboards had very high levels of bacteria; one had five times more germs than the toilet seat. Recall how many times while using the keyboard your face was touched, or sat and worked while eating lunch or a snack, this is quite alarming to say the least.

Bacteria
The Science definition of Bacteria is; any of a large group of one-celled organisms that lack a cell nucleus, reproduce by fission or by forming spores, and in some cases cause disease.
They are the most abundant life forms on Earth found in all living things, and in all of the Earth's environments. Bacteria, usually found living off other organisms, make up most of the kingdom of prokaryotes (Monera or Prokaryota), with one group (the archaea or archaebacteria) often classified as a separate kingdom. It is important to remember that bacteria are the plural of bacterium, and that saying bacteria is incorrect. http://science.yourdictionary.com/bacterium

Bacterium Infections
A bacterium infection can be caused from bacterium entering the body through the nose, mouth, eyes, and vagina, found in environments on the skin, in the airways, and in the digestive tract. Some bacterium is good for the body, for instance, bacterium can help to digest certain foods and keep infectious organisms from forming, but once bacterium gets into the body and starts to multiply it is called an infection. There are thousands of different bacterium found all around the world, however, only a few can cause disease in humans such as; • Cellulitis • Cholera • Fournier's gangrene

• Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)

• Trachoma (chlamydia eye infection)

• Tuberculosis

If left untreated, some bacterium infections may cause death. However, if diagnosed and treated fast, most people can make a complete recovery. Bacterial infections are treated with antibiotics, depending on the type of infection, how severe the infection is, and how good the person’s health is. Antibiotics can be administered orally, applied to the skin of the infected area, or be injected into the veins.

Sanitation Solutions
I.T. vendors have taken notice to the dirty keyboard epidemic, and are not taking it lightly. Aten Technology Inc., in Irvine CA came up with a solution of their own; they started using antimicrobial nanocoating to its KVM (keyboard, video, and mice) switch devices. "The cost associated with putting this technology on our products is so negligible that it makes sense to do it without raising the cost of the product," stated Keith Renty, Aten's business and product development manager. Another company, Seal Shield Corp. in Jacksonville, Fla., produced a dishwasher safe keyboard; they have already begun marketing them with the hospitals. Seal Shield CEO Bradley Whitchurch said Dell Inc. is now offering the keyboard, which sells for about $50, as an option for their health care products line.

Summary
Bacterium on keyboards can spread the hard to treat staph infection, called Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). This bacterium has also been known to cause pneumonia, as well as, infections in the blood stream. There are many low cost sanitation solutions on the market these days, however, by washing the hands with soap and warm water, using hand sanitizer when ever possible, and cleaning the keyboard with a disinfecting wipe often, will surely lower the risks of getting a bacterial infection, especially when the keyboard, mouse, and phone is being used by multiple people.

...ork2012 - 2013 Catalog A Message from the President “Sullivan University is truly a unique and student success focused institution.” I have shared that statement with numerous groups and it simply summarizes my basic philosophy of what Sullivan is all about. When I say that Sullivan is “student success focused,” I feel as President that I owe a definition of this statement to all who are considering Sullivan University. First, Sullivan is unique among institutions of higher education with its innovative, career-first curriculum. You can earn a career diploma or certificate in a year or less and then accept employment while still being able to complete your associate, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree by attending during the day, evenings, weekends, or online. Business and industry do not expand or hire new employees only in May or June each year. Yet most institutions of higher education operate on a nine-month school year with almost everyone graduating in May. We remained focused on your success and education, and continue to offer our students the opportunity to begin classes or to graduate four times a year with our flexible, year-round full-time schedule of classes. If you really want to attend a school where your needs (your real needs) come first, consider Sullivan University. I believe we can help you exceed your expectations. Since words cannot fully describe the atmosphere at Sullivan University, please accept my personal invitation to visit and experience...

...CR TOPIC-WISE EXERCISES (700-800 LEVEL) 1 The 700-800 Club Critical Reasoning Critical Reasoning Topic 1: CONCLUSION 1. • • • • • 2. In the United States, about $5,200 per person per year is spent on health care, while in Britain the amount is about half that. A recent study indicated that middle-aged white Americans have a significantly higher rate of diabetes and heart disease than do middle-aged white Britons. Even after eliminating from the study the lifestyle differences of diet, exercise, smoking, and drinking, the data showed that the Americans have poorer health than their British counterparts. The statements above, if true, best support which of the following assertions? Health care spending in the United States should be reduced by 50%. More expensive health care causes a higher incidence of certain diseases. The money spent on health care in the United States is not being used effectively. The average health care spending for middle-aged white Americans is probably less than the average health care spending for Americans in general. Something other than diet, exercise, smoking, and drinking must account for the difference in health for the two groups in the study. ...WOMEN DEVELOPMENT AND NATIONAL POLICY ON WOMEN IN NIGERIA Olubunmi Aderemi Sokefun Abstract This paper discusses the document on women in Nigeria (National Policy on Women). Several past administrations in this country have treated women issues and affairs with calculated levity: Carefully side - tracking or blatantly refusing to accord it the necessary attention. It is now a thing to gladden the hearts of all women of Nigeria that, "after four attempts by four former heads of Nigeria's Government," Chief Obasanjo's administration finally granted government recognition to women's issues in this country. The official document .on Human Rights' issues as it relates to Nigerian women; this document is known as the NATIONAL POLICY ON WOMEN. This paper therefore focuses on the document which promises to bring delight to the heart of every woman in this country. Introduction When late Mrs. Olufunmilayo Ransome Kuti joined the vanguard team as the only nationalist and activist during the early struggle for Nigerian independence, hardly did .anybody realize then that she had a dream, a clear vision of a future Nigerian woman, that vision was crystal clear in her heart, and like a pivot, it stood firmly on three stand posts-known today as women's rights, women emancipation and women empowerment.. . Mrs. Olufunmilayo Ransome-Kuti later joined by some educated women of like minds, fought daringly and relentlessly for these three .pivotal goals of women emergency and relevance in the socio-political...

...C hapter Two: The Basics of Logical Reasoning The Logical Reasoning Section The focus of this book is on the Logical Reasoning section of the LSAT, and each Logical Reasoning section contains a total of 24 to 26 questions. Since you have thirty-five minutes to complete the section, you have an average of approximately one minute and twenty-five seconds to complete each question. Of course, the amount of time you spend on each question will vary with the difficulty of each question and the total number of questions per section. For virtually all students the time constraint is a major obstacle, and as we progress through this book we will discuss time management techniques as well as time-saving techniques that you can employ within the section. The Section Directions Each Logical Reasoning section is prefaced by the following directions: “The questions in this section are based on the reasoning contained in brief statements or passages. For some questions, more than one of the choices could conceivably answer the question. However, you are to choose the best answer; that is, the response that most accurately and completely answers the question. You should not make assumptions that are by commonsense standards implausible, superfluous, or incompatible with the passage. After you have chosen the best answer, blacken the corresponding space on your answer sheet.” On average, you have 1 minute and 25 seconds to complete each question. Because these directions precede...
