"The Devil and Tom Walker"

Why would a story about the devil include characters of a romanticism? Washington Irving wrote the novel The Devil and Tom Walker. Irving uses the following three characteristics of romanticism in his story, Individualism, belief in supernatural, and inspired by beauty of nature.

Irving used Individualism in his story in many different ways. “ At length she determined to drive the bargain on her own account, and if she succeeded, to keep all the gain to herself ”(ll. 158-159, 483). This quote shows the use of individualism from Tom's wife who is determined to make a deal with the Devil by herself and not share anything with anyone else. “ Done! …show more content…

In this quote the Devil marks the deal he made with Tom with a black print of a finger burnt on his forehead and does not go away which shows belief in the supernatural. “ Still, in spite of all this strenuous attention to forms, Tom had a lurking dread that the devil, after all, would have his due ”(ll. 290-291, 488). In this quote Tom is scared that the Devil will eventually come for him in deed which shows he believes in him which is a example of belief in the supernatural. The romanticism characteristic belief in the supernatural is seen in these examples that show that Tom belies in the devil and his …show more content…

Inspired by beauty and nature is shown by Irving in this quote when he describes the swamp as dark and black like that of a place where the devil would live. “ The black man whisked him like a child into the saddle, gave the horse the lash, and away he galloped, with Tom on his back, in the midst of the thunderstorm ”(ll. 323-325, 490). Irving uses the thunderstorm which is loud and dark to describe the devils presence as he takes Tom away. “ On one side of this inlet is a beautiful dark grove; on the opposite side the land rises abruptly from the water’s edge into a high ridge, on which grow a few scattered oaks of great age and immense size ”(ll. 3-5, 477). This quote shows the characteristic of beauty of nature to describe the setting of this story. Irving uses the characteristic inspired by beauty of nature not only to describe setting but also the characters in the story.

In conclusion, Irving uses the following three characteristics of romanticism in his story, Individualism, belief in supernatural, and inspired by beauty of nature. Irving uses these characteristics to help describe the story on a deeper level. Sometimes what we think is a good descision doesn't always turn out to be so
