Installation and Training Documentation

Installing windows is a fairly straightforward process that requires simple instruction from the installation wizard. We need, however, an idea for the specific use of the system and how the OS will be used. So on top of an installation of the OS there needs to be an implementation of a filing system that is organized and easy to use. Also a user based system to ensure that those with the proper permissions can make the necessary changes and those without expertise cannot make significant changes and potentially ruin the system. First we need to install windows. When we insert the CD be sure to boot from the CD. The following screen should appear, prompting you if you wish to install Windows 7. Click Install now.

Next a screen will show what is currently being installed. The computer will restart a few times as different sections are installed. When the installation is complete it changing screens prompting you for more information.

This screen is asking for a name for the Primary User which will be defaulted as the Admin and also a name for the system itself. In this case this will be the first computer to have Windows installed on it at the ABC Hospital, so to be able to recognize it on the network it will be given a easy to remember name so you know exactly which system you are working with.

Next you will need to enter a password to keep your computer more secure. A good password is recommended to have at least 8 characters, numbers and capitalized letters. Make sure not to forget this password or you will have limited usage to your system

It will then prompt you to set up windows protection to make sure your system will be protected from exterior influences, such as viruses and malware. Additional Anti-virus protection is recommended.

After you are finished with that screen the computer will do a soft restart and windows will start. The folowing screen is the image that will be displayed if the OS was installed successfully.

Next the File structure will need to be organized. In My Computer you view your computer’s file structure through a series of drop down menus. This will require a heavy use of the “New Folder” button. Under the Local Disk (C:) create the folder “Data” Then click on “Data” and create three new folders: “Administration”, “Patients” and “Research”. Then click on “Patients” and create three new folders: “Emergency”, “Outpatient” and “Surgical”. Once you have finished look back to “Research” click on it and create two more folders: “NIMH Study” and “Pharma Grant.”

Next we can change the password or picture of your administrator account as needed. In the User Accounts Category in the control panel click on “Change Your Password.” You will need your old password in order to change it. The top box is for your old password, the second is for the new and the third is to retype your password so a spelling error does not get you locked out of the system. If needed, leave a good hint to help you remember your new password. NOTE: Do Not Type in your password in this box.

Then we can change the permissions of a specific user. Under User Accounts click on “Manage other accounts” and then click on the account you wish to manage. Here you can change the name of the User and assign the permissions that it will have. Here this User is the Administrator.

Then the static address can be changed. In the control panel, click “Network and Sharing Center” then on the left, click “Change Adapter Settings.” Right click “Local Area Connection” and open “Properties.” A menu will open and click “Internet Protocol Verison 4” and then click the button “Properties” to the side. Refer to the image to see the configuration of the IP. (Lowell Heddings, 2010)

To set up your network printer click on the Start menu button then click on the sub category “Devices and Printers”. In the top left corner there is a button called “Add a Printer” click that. In the next screen click on “Add A Network, Wireless or Bluetooth Printer.” Use the TCP/IP Option to be able to name printer for easy recognition on the network.

For a new local Printer follow the same instructions for the network printer except when prompted for a network printer, click the top option to create a local printer instead. Create a new port, give it an appropriate name as needed per the network.

WARNING: The following is an advanced method that requires editting the registry that if done wrong could potentially ruin the Windows installation. In the start menu use the search box and type in “regedit” and click the top option. Follow the directory path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
Find “Legalnoticecaption” (Which will be the title) and “Legalnoticetext” (Which will be your message) and input the desired massage to be displayed. Refer to image to see how the screen will appear. (Greg Shultz, 2011)

Finally to ensure that your system is up to date with new patches and security tweaks your system needs to be updated from Microsoft itself. DO NOT trust any other source for Microsoft updates. In the “Control Panel” click “Windows Updates” and click “Check for Updates” as shown in the following image. There will be scan and a value presented to show how many updates can be installed. Click “Install Updates” if desired. The update should be installed automatically.

Reflection Statement This project was a good way to navigate yourself around a computer to find the proper tools needed to solve each presented objective. Then to turn around and leave “breadcrumbs” for novices to follow in your footsteps and getting used to leaving cognitive instructions to minimize confusion. As the expert you know exactly what you are talking about however your audience is not and therefore need to take smaller steps in an easy to understand and well organized way to be introduced to things they were previously unacquainted with. This will help me in my future career to be an IT for the people. An IT is only as good as the solutions he can come up with. It doesn’t matter if the solution cures cancer unless it is legible and can be used. Finding ways to explain an issue and its solution in a digestable manner will be invaluable to me in the field as I work with people all along the spectrum of computer experience.
