Nike, Inc is an American company started by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight. Based out of Beaverton, Oregon, Nike was founded in 1964 under the name Blue Ribbon Sports. Bowerman and Knight changed the name of the company to Nike after the Greek goddess of victory in 1971. The Nike company designs, develops, and manufacturers athletic and active wear products including footwear, apparel, equipment, and accessories. The company started with one pair of running shoes and has grown into a multinational billion-dollar business that provides everything one may need to be active. Nike's success is in great part to the company's strong and ever evolving marketing strategies that continually meet the needs of their target demographics in unique and emotional …show more content…
Political forces. The political forces within the United States and many other parts of the world are strong right now. A lot of people have unyielding political opinions and are aligning their spending with companies that adhere to their beliefs. Nike recently became the first company to highlight an openly trans male athlete in a commercial. While a push to be inclusive, this did make a political statement and can lead to loss of business. In addition to their marketing decisions, Nike may also receive negative impact from its associations with various athletes or sports organizations. One example of this is the backlash from the FIFA scandal in 2015. Although Nike was not an official sponsor of FIFA, many believed that Nike was involved in the scandal due to the sponsoring or athletes that were later seen as bribes (Hobbs, …show more content…
Legal and regulatory forces. There are no known legal or regulatory forces that would come into play in this particular situation.
5. Technological forces. While Nike is not a technology company, changes in technology have positively impacted their business and marketing. First is the transition from print marketing to social media. When Nike first stood out, they commanded print media with powerful and attractive ads. As more people started watching television and there was a television in every home, their marketing efforts focused on the production of TV commercials while still keeping a strong presence in print ads. The most recent shift has been from television to social media. Again, Nike has shown prowess in dominating social media marketing opportunities. Nike has a strong presence on Twitter and Instagram, where they have found a majority of their target market are active.
Another way technological forces have impacted Nike and the company's marketing strategies are through the development and growth of e-commerce. Nike still sells through their stores, as well as numerous other chains throughout the country, but Nike products are also sold online.
