Differences in educational achievement refer to the significant differences in educational success and failure. This difference can be found between the two genders where it is a fact that girls outperform boys in the education system; some may argue that this is a result of factors outside of school. The validity of this or whether the differences are caused by factors outside school will be discussed.
One reason as to why it can be argued that gender differences in educational achievement are caused by factors outside school is because of changes in society’s views on females. In past generations, girls would not attend school and instead stay at home and learn from their mother how to cook and look after children, they were nurtured to become housewives for their future husbands. This meant that women had low aspirations, however this has changed. Sue Sharpe argues that this is a result of a gender quake that society is experiencing. Previously, girls had aspired to get married at a young age and become mothers to children early on in their lives. However, girl’s priorities have changed to getting an education so that they can have a career (Francis and Skelton) and therefore being able to support themselves above all other priorities rather than relying on a husband. This therefore means society accepts that it is normal for girls to get an education and provide for themselves; therefore society’s views on women can be argued to be an important outside school factor to influence gender differences in education achievement. Furthermore, feminist would generally accept that society is more equal than before and that women are succeeding now than in past generations.
Also, another reason for gender differences in educational achievement being caused by outside school factors is because of the difference in amount of effort and dedication put in learning outside of

In recent years, females are attaining more than males while males are underachieving. This may be caused by factors outside school. Outside factors has caused girls to outperforming boys is due to girls attitudes towards education as the female expectations have changed. Many women are now looking beyond the housewife role. This is because there has been a genderquake, Wilkinson argues that females have improved their educational performance due to fundamental changes in attitudes towards female role in society. Therefore there is a more positive attitude towards education for women and they use this as a means of improving chances at work. This shows how outside school factors influence differences in achievement as Francis and Skelton’s studies can show that many girls are acquiring for jobs that require degree level qualifications therefore girls strive to work harder at home to ensure they do well in order to achieve a well-paid job. For example teachers are likely to label middle class pupils as bright and more able to achieve in education, whereas, teachers would see working class as less able pupils. The attachment of labels has important consequences for how others see a person and how he/ she comes to view themselves. Because the teacher judges pupils by their characteristics, the functionalist theory argues that the working class lack culture, which includes values, norms and language. Once labelled a deviant the label can attach to the whole identity of the student, not just the deviant act. Teachers perceive the ‘ideal pupil’ to be one who conforms to middle class standards of behaviour, which, according to Dune and Gazeley note that teachers tend to perceive the ‘ideal pupil’ as middle class. However there are other school factors which cause social class differences in educational achievement, such as, the self-fulfilling prophecy, streaming and pupil subculture. ...dedication and hard work, but for many in this country the big dream about the future is fading as the gap between rich and poor continues to grow. Children were told that if they studied hard they could “make something of themselves.” While this is still true, the rules have changed and the stakes are higher. Governments have decreased aid for public education and set spending caps. Students today are being faced with “high stakes” testing. We used to worry about scoring high enough on examinations to get into college, but now students take examinations to get out of high school. Some policy makers, during sometime, have suggested a school’s funding will be determined by how well their students perform on the tests. In theory it is wonderful, the schools that do well will be rewarded for their excellence. In practice it will most likely become another opportunity for the rich school districts to succeed and the poor school districts to fail. Revenue caps and high stakes testing appear to be an inevitable part of our future so we must find affordable, effective means for inspiring students and their families to improve student outcome. One way may be parental involvement. Another way might be to teach effective parenting skills which could in turn increase parental involvement in education particularly home economics.
