Civil Rights Events Civil rights in the United States are assured undisputable rights retained under the Constitution by citizens of America. This liberty has been clarified and interpreted by the Supreme Court as well as lower federal courts. Civil rights can thus be defined as individual legitimate and established protection more efficient than a person, for instance, parts of the administration and other persons. The freedoms unequivocally characterized, make up the Bill of Rights, including the right to speak freely, the rights to privacy and the privilege to bear arms, there are likewise numerous freedoms of individuals not characterized in the Constitution, as expressed in the Ninth Amendment (Foner, 2008). Over time, the level of civil rights as well as the size of the population of American citizens who have had access to the rights has expanded. In several occasions, civil rights groups have demonstrated to demand the very rights. Black protests: There were many very successful attempts gearing to making lives of black people better due to discrimination from the white race. However, rights movements gave black people Constitution legal equality which illegalized segregation in public places like schools and workplace. Again black people were given the right to vote, and discrimination in housing was banned (Foner, 2008). With even this the black community never achieved economic equality and remained a disadvantaged group. Civil rights groups led protests in the 1960s, the most impactful being the protest The Washington Freedom March, which occurred in 1963 (Foner, 2008). Thousands of people marched to Lincoln Memorial Park to listen to “I have a Dream speech” by Martin Luther King. These events inspired a sense of responsibility to the government and the people of the United States of America. That for everyone to realize that

Politics- Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

...Politics- Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow POLITICAL 110: US GOVERNMENT Feb. 14th, 2016 Professor Mark Stallo Politics- Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow Civil Liberties and Social Responsibility in American Government Today Throughout our country’s history, civil liberties have influenced American social responsibility within the government. Civil liberties are fundamental rights and freedoms that are guaranteed by the Constitution. There are many examples of civil liberties mentioned in the Bill of Rights such as: freedom of speech, freedom of press, the right to a fair trial, the right to own property, and freedom of religion. (U.S. Department of Defense, 2016) The protection of these rights as guaranteed by the Constitution allows United States citizens to freely act in accordance with each civil liberty. For instance, on April 25th, 2015 local officials in Baltimore MD responded to citizens exercising their civil liberties including freedom of speech and right to protest. The events influenced the local officials and political leaders to react both negatively and positively. Although the people participating in the protest were able to exercise their right to protest and speak freely, this freedom was short lived. Eventually several protestors, civilians, and even news reporters were shot with rubber bullets, pepper-sprayed, arrested, or otherwise silenced during the demonstration. These events are very similar to another instance during 2014 in Ferguson...

California’s People, Economy, and Politics: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

...California’s People, Economy, and Politics: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow California has been known as “the Golden State” for many decades thanks to the Gold Rush, the birth of the Golden Gate Bridge, and more than a hundred years of continuously blooming growth. Even so, some say that the state has lost its shine over the years, and to many others the state’s politics seem unpredictable and turbulent. California’s economy has been plugged in recession since 2007 and the state has suffered severe budget deficits for over a decade. Meanwhile political leaders rise and fall unexpectedly, and special interest groups and wealthy leaders are constantly accused of buying the elections on their behalf. However, issues are more likely to be referred to the voters which are often confused among complex and (sometimes) obscure ballot measures. Moreover, some people say democracy has gone mad, and others agree that California is simply ungovernable. As tense and dysfunctional as California politics may appear, it seriously affects us all and it has to be understood by examining the past and present characteristics of the state starting with its constantly changing population and economy. The persistent implementation of new technologies and the never-ending arrival of immigrants, have transformed California’s economy and have made its society more diverse and multicultural. To understand the process of California today, we also have to comprehend the past about the evolution of the...

...object of politics (i.e., biopolitics) is being challenged. During the 1970s and beginning of 1980s theorists such as Foucault argued that the sovereign right to kill was increasingly displaced by the administrative compulsion to make live. That is, instead of ending violence or killing especially in the context of Europe and North America lethal conflict was redistributed through out the population turning politics into war by other means such as the withdrawal of the state from the household (i.e., oikos) and national life and hence with a more focus on biopolitics. In the Global South though theorists like Mbembe challenge Foucauldian biopolitics to argue that outside Europe and North America this governing of life (zoe) took a different form: necropolitics resulting from the histories of power relations such as slavery and colonization. Yet, theorists in the Global North such as Foucault insisted that the 1970s the life of power mutated increasing the neoliberal turn in government leaving our times and more concretely “the future as yet unthought.” This class begins with Foucault’s concept of biopolitics and Mbembe’s idea of necropolitics and asks: what are the stakes in thinking and practicing power today through the locus of biopolitics and/or necropolitics? What are the stakes in reading these tensions with respect to yesterday—and to tomorrow for the art of governing and power relations? We begin by asking what and how relevant are these concepts today and also...

It May Not Work in Politics

...Politics of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow Janell Fogle Strayer University U.S. Government Professor Stallo 11/15/2015 Politics of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow Introduction Civil Rights Events that Influence Social Responsibility in American People Today In the American history, several Civil liberties events have played an indispensable role in shaping the approach of Americans to social responsibility. For instance, the signing of executive order 9981 by President Truman in 1948 was critical in eliminating discrimination among Americans (Carson, 2013). The executive order declared equity of treatment among all persons working in the department of defense. Indeed, this was a milestone in getting rid of the discrimination that was rampant among the armed forces personnel. Before, the signing of the order, only African American served in the American military frontlines. This act was highly criticized by people of African-American descent as it was an apparent show of discrimination based on color and race (Carson, 2013). However, the signing of the executive order brought about equity by eliminating discrimination of the armed officers depending on their color and race. To date, the signing of the executive order has been fundamental to eliminating discrimination and bringing about equity among Americans. Secondly, the second amendment of 1968 was crucial in enhancing the freedom of speech among the American people (Jackson, 2009)....

Civil Rights Events

...Assignment 1: Politics - Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow Danita Darnell Professor's Name: Professor Rufus Robinson, Ph.D. Course Title: U.S. Government February 13, 2016 Civil Rights Events The two Civil Rights Events that I will discuss are the Equal Pay Act and the Pregnancy Discrimination Act. The Equal Pay Act of 1963 is a United States federal law amending the Fair Labor Standards Act, aimed at abolishing wage disparity based on sex. It was signed into law on June 10, 1963, by John F. Kennedy as part of his New Frontier Program. The Equal Pay Act requires that men and women be given equal pay for equal work in the same establishment. The jobs need not be identical, but they must be substantially equal. It is job content, not job titles, that determines whether jobs are substantially equal. Specifically, the EPA provides that employers may not pay unequal wages to men and women who perform jobs that require substantially equal skill, effort and responsibility, and that are performed under similar working conditions within the same establishment (Facts About Equal Pay and Compensation Discrimination). The Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 prohibits employment discrimination against female workers who are (or intend to become) pregnant -- including discrimination in hiring, failure to promote, and wrongful termination. Employers must treat employees who are temporarily unable to work due to pregnancy just as they treat employees who are temporarily disabled...

Chris Herren

...High Hoops February 26, 2013 Chris Herren a former college basketball standout turned NBA bust, had one thing holding him back throughout his basketball career, drug abuse. The story of his life has many twists and turns all of which he portrays in his inspirational speeches. He is not on any of the top 100 lists of great American orators because his speeches are not directed towards the masses instead he reaches out to high school students in hopes that they will not make the same mistakes he did. Chris Herren grew up in Fall River MA, a relatively small town outside of Boston. He attended Durfee High School from 1990-1994. It is here that his life began to spiral out of control. As a freshman, it was evident that his talents on the court surpassed that of all of his predecessors. But, his decisions off the court ultimately lead to his fall from grace. In his book he notes that during his high school years drinking, drugs, and fighting came before basketball. Despite this, he still managed to have the greatest high school basketball career Durfee High had ever witnessed. As word spread of his talents, the Burdon of the city fell on his back. He describes Fall River in one powerful sentence. “Fall River, it teaches you from a very young age, to fight, to punch first, to be loyal, to never let any friend be left behind, and it gets a bad rap for that.” Following his standout freshman year, the best College basketball teams began recruiting...

Ethics During Change

...Ethics during Change Ethics, according to dictionary.com is a system of moral principles (the ethics of a culture), the rules of conduct recognized in respect to human actions of a particular group or culture (medical ethics, law enforcement ethics), or the moral principles of an individual. Further definition says that ethics is a branch of philosophy that deals with the values related to human conduct in respect to the rights and wrongs of certain behavior (Dictionary.com, 2014). Ethics in the workplace is something that is a system of moral principles, or how a workplace culture views what is acceptable and what is not. In this article, we will discuss ethics and their effects during a change implementation, most importantly, how they change with the ever-changing business environment. Despite the hundreds of pages in an organizations code of conduct manuals, ethics, and the ethical culture is something that is often over looked during a change implementation. With everything that is changing in the business environment, often ethics and morals is the last thing management and upper echelon management tends to overlook. When the business changes, everything changes, including the culture of the environment. In the event of an environmental culture change, workplace ethics will have to change along with it. South Africa and Homelessness

...South Africa is Africa's most developed country, most of the black people - rural and urban - are poor, with low standards of living. South Africa has vital natural resources such as diamonds and gold and is rich in other resources such as coal, chromite, copper, iron ore, manga- nese, platinum, phosphate rock, silver, uranium and vanadium (South Africa, 2008). It is obvious that South Africa can sustain their economy through these resources. Through the centuries South Africa has faced difficult time since the Dutch came in 1600’s, in 1700 they started importing slaves establishing the dominance of white over non- whites in the region. The non-whites faced discrimination for years under apartheid and political corruption ran by the whites. Today things look better for the people of South Africa, but they still have many obstacles to overcome. Although South Africa has overcome many travesties throughout the years, their reasonably new democracy faces more with complex political parties, recent struggles with homelessness, and what is being done about this situation. Firstly, apartheid is an “Afrikaans word literally meaning apartness,” refers to the policy of racial segregation and its concomitant economic and political discrimination that was adopted by the South African government for a half century. Coined in the late 1930s by the South African Bureau for Racial Affairs (SABRA), apartheid reflected the social, yet non-legal, practices of South Africans. In the 1940s, the Afrikaner...

Immigration Experiement

...Immigration Experience Dear Aunt Mia, Today is November 12, 1912 and the day is gloomy. I miss you dearly and don’t know when I will be able to send this letter. Who knows how many more days of smelling the ocean and the stench of poverty I can stomach. Father could not afford a second class ticket, so we are secluded to the deck. The first few nights it rained heavily, not to mention the cold from the open air. I fear many of us might catch an illness, and fear for the little ones on this voyage. There is nothing to protect us from the harsh ocean air, whipping our hair around and slapping out face. Sleep is very uncomfortable, we had to supply our own blankets, which are damp from the ocean air. The hard floor has really not taken well to mother, she is much pain. We receive very little water and food, definitely not enough to survive on. Many wondering if we will parents watch as their children parish from hunger. A few desperate souls attacked kitchen workers and they paid the ultimate price for trying to take food to feed their families. Father never dare cross a crew member, he knows the punishment would result in a beating and even being thrown overboard. As I gaze around our ship, we are almost elbow to elbow and I can’t wait to hit land. Tomorrow is my 14th birthday, and I hope to see the great Statue of Liberty as my present. Mother said going to America will give us a better life, and that we will be back to our home in a few years. Observing around...

As you all know, the preparation and attendance of this year’s Ttabamiruka has not come without major hurdles. In light of this, I wish to congratulate you, the men and women in attendance today, and salute your leaders for the excellent organization. As we sit here today, we’re all mindful of the empty chairs in this hall which would have been occupied. We know that some of the would be occupants of the empty chairs have long gone okuyiga embogo, others are sick and indisposed; we pray for the health of our colleague -- and our friends. Others have not made it here because ends have failed to meet…..that is all understandable. When the organizers of this event were inviting me Ttabamiruka014, I was informed that this year’s theme was to celebrate Buganda Clan Leaders for their selfless role in upholding the unity of Buagnda. The idea that over fifty Clan Leaders had been invited and that they were indeed going to attend thrilled me. As Muzukulu wa Namwama the possibility of sitting on my Jjaaja’s lap here at Wood Bridge New Jersey excited me most and I declared that Ttabamiruka014 was a must attend for me.
