The existence of this poem has made a big impression for quite some time now. In the poem Beowulf showed qualities of heroism, pride, strength and boastfulness, when fighting the monsters and running his great kingdom of the Danes. Did Beowulf have the characteristics and qualities of a true epic hero? Beowulfs character traits did in fact represent what a true epic hero really is. One Beowulf’s qualities he did best were brag, he would brag to people about great accomplishments he made on his scary and dangerous journeys. These films are clearly products of the same visionary; each film presents a protagonist of strong will and sound ethic and, in each case, he or she is forced to embark on an epic journey. Both films were very successful in Japan; however, although both were critically acclaimed in the United States, only Spirited Away saw continued box-office success. In order to explain the disparity between these films’ earnings, I will discuss the different approaches, which these films take, to the theme of duality. Naturally, the idea of a double nature is unsettling. However, whereas Spirited Away addresses this theme in a way that invigorates and provides closure, Princess Mononoke leaves the audience feeling uncertain. In order to understand the disparity between these films’ earnings, one must examine not only thematic differences between these films, but also patterns among high-grossing films in the United States. The Tang Dynasty period, 618 to 907 AD is only one small section of history on the Chinese pottery timeline, but it is noted especially for its ceramic funerary animals and its change from earthenware to stoneware. There is a strong foreign influence during this period and it is evident in the ceramics as well as other art (Medley 77). During the Tang period, there are gradual improvements in the earthenware and stoneware. It seems that there is a search for the “pure white body” (Medley 97). For centuries, there had been a continued effort to make bodies cleaner, whiter, and harder. It is in the Tang Period that “the clay bodies themselves were essentially kaolinic, being supplemented… with other ingredients which helped towards a degree of vitrification. It is to this type of material in north China that the term porcellanous is applied” (Medley 99). It is perhaps a type of “protoporcelain” that leads historians to believe that porcelain was developed sometime between the Han and Tang dynasties (Latourette 628). This had a profound impact on the art of Asia and of Europe (Medley 102).
