Over the course of history, humans have learned an individual will thrive more if surrounded by people that care about them. The relationships people build with others create an impact on every action and decision one makes. Throughout the course of the novel, Slammed by Colleen Hoover, readers are able to recognize several of the characters are slowly coming to terms with the significance of the relationships they establish and how these relationships affect their lives. My mother has always been the one to give me advice about friends when I was going through a hard time. She was always exceptionally honest with me about the situation as well. It was in this year when I went to my mother with numerous questions about friendships and the issues I had within them. My biggest worry was that the friends I had in grade school no longer had the same interest as me. I suspected I had a completely different outlook on life than they did and I wondered what happened. Was it them changing or was it me? My mother was quick to tell me that it’s okay to not stay with the same group of friends your entire life. She said that what was most important was that I surrounded myself with people who genuinely cared about me. It wasn’t until I was reading this book that I fully grasped the idea of having people that love you around. Layken said in the novel, “I feel like together, we all just punched death square in the face” (252). This quote made me realize that the people you love will always be there for you to help you through a hard time in your life. Both Layken and her mother, Julia thought they could face so much on their own, but by the end of the novel they realized that it’s okay not to be okay at times and you are allowed to turn to the ones you love for help and guidance. Lake turned to her mother for direction so often through her whole life and then finally her mother turned to her for direction.
