I thought my father was going to die 20 years ago. He had a heart attack. His brother had died in his 60’s of a heart attack and his father had died of a heart attack in his 60’s. My father was 61, not a good record. So I cherished every day I had with him these last twenty years. To make it another 20 years is truly remarkable. We owe that mostly to two things: my mother and his grandchildren. My mom and dad were married almost 49 years, another pretty remarkable thing. I will never, ever forget how well my mother took care of my father. As with everything in our house, she was in charge of his health, thank god. Thank you mom for all you did. My father loved his grandchildren. Every single time I spoke to him he would say, how’s the baby. In the last couple of years I would say what baby? He would say you know who I’m talking about. I would say dad she’s ten. I said to him one day you treat your grandchildren better than your own children, he said that‘s because I had to raise you! My father could be brutally honest. The first way that these sports are similar is, all the players on each of the fields have to be athletes. That wasn’t the headline in my local newspaper this past summer, but this was: “New pitch count limits applauded by some, ripped by others.” For those of you who don’t eat, sleep, and breathe high school baseball, you wouldn’t know what this means, so here’s some background. The NFHS, the national governing body of high school sports, had instituted an innings limit on high school pitchers to ten innings every five days. It was meant to prevent shoulder injuries. Nobody liked the limit because it made no sense. It had no bearing on the number of pitches thrown, since a pitcher could throw 50 pitches in one inning. Seeing the issues with this, there will be a pitch count limit for this upcoming season. Some people love this idea, but they don’t play the sport and don’t know how it affects a player. The whip-like throwing motion stretches the ligaments in a player’s shoulder. The only way to keep the ligaments stretched is by throwing continuously. Many pitchers are actually sidelined because their arms are “dead,” meaning that their ligaments are too tight, inhibiting their ability to throw. Lawrence Peter Berra, or more commonly known as Yogi Berra, was a baseball Hall of Fame catcher and was known across the globe for his skills and talent. He died September 29, 2015 at age 90. Although Yogi is gone, his memories still live on through his qualities, legendary sayings, and in the Hall of Fame. Berra has many great qualities. Like the unbelievable way he would turn bunts into double plays or how he would twist pop-ups into easy outs. Yogi was born on May 12, 1925. He came from a humble background in a family of seven. His parents were Italian immigrants and at a young age his mother nicknamed him Lawdie because she could barely pronounce Lawrence. Yogi started playing baseball in the local American Legion and it was Bobby Hofman who was the one who came up with the name, Yogi. He said Lawrence looked like an Hindu yogi when his arms and legs were folded that way after they lost a game or getting ready to bat (Tierney). It was in his teens when he first got serious about baseball. He was playing in the minor leagues when his neighborhood friend, Joe Garagiola, and him got offered a deal to play for the Cardinals by manager Branch Rickey.
