...0 The Relationship between being in a Committed Relationship and Academic Performance in College Females Tania Jimenez and Ashley Tatem Abstract This correlational study investigated the relationship between being in a committed relationship and academic performance in college females. The study involved 60 female undergraduate participants from a small, private, Catholic women’s college in northeastern New Jersey. It was hypothesized that college females who were in a supportive committed relationship would have significantly higher GPAs than students who were in unsupportive relationships. The Psychosocial Intimacy Questionnaire (PIQ, Tesch, 1985) was used to measure intimacy, specifically romantic love, supportiveness, and communication ease in a participant’s committed relationship. Effects of Having Relationships to Academic Performance

...Chapter I Background of the Study Every day, college students are facing a conflict of interest: to study or not to study. Their decisions are affected by various factors that are often not controlled by students like part-time jobs, involvement in organizational activities, etc. Another major factor that affects students’ academic performance according to researchers is dating or being in a relationship. Upon entering a relationship during college, one might be forced to choose to either study, or spend time with his partner. This may leave the student with a lot of stress that may affect the student including his studies. The course Bachelor of Science in Business Administration major in Human Resource Operations Management (BSBA-HROM) is a course taken up by hundreds of students in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM). PLM is known for its quality education and high standards. Applicants are screened and went to several tests and interviews before being accepted. In this university, each student is required to have a general average of 2.25 at the end of every semester. Whoever fails to meet the required general average, might get kicked out of the university. As a concerned fellow student, the researcher observed that despite the high grade requirement, some students still have time to enter relationships. Along this thought the study about the effects of having relationships to the academic performance of selected students in BSBA-HROM has been conceived. Statement of...

The Living Conditions of University Students in Boarding Houses and Dormitories in Davao City, Philippines

...January 2012 International Peer Reviewed Journal IAMURE: International Journal of Social Science The Living Conditions of University Students in Boarding Houses and Dormitories in Davao City, Philippines RUEL A. BRILLIANTES iro@hcdc.edu.ph patwel_18@yahoo.com NELIA B. AGA FE C. TIPACE Holy Cross of Davao College CESAR A. ADEGUE MERCELEE P. PEREZ Brokenshire College ADORICO M. AYA-AY EMMA V. SAGARINO University of the Immaculate Conception Abstract - Living in a boarding house or dormitory is necessary for students who come from far places. In Davao City, an observable statistics of university students from neighbouring provinces and the city’s outskirts live in these temporary residences. However, reports reveal that these housing facilities, most of the time, fail to consider students’ safety and welfare. This study determined the living conditions of university students in boarding houses and dormitories. This is anchored on the premise that the physical and environmental components of these residential facilities could affect students’ holistic well-being. Data elicited through survey involving five hundred seventy-one (571) respondents and focused group discussion among selected groups of student-boarders/dormers, reveal that a student’s stay in a boarding house and dormitory has significant contributions to his/her personal, social, academic and emotional growth. But, this has nothing to do with the development of his/her spirituality. Results 66 International Peer Reviewed...

New Media and Youth: a Challenge or an Opportunity?

...study is divided into several chapters. The beginning chapter presents a detailed background of the study conducted among a group of secondary schools pupils in The Netherlands. The study focuses on new Media and whether its’ usage has any effect on academic performance. This is explored from the context of HAVO Dutch youths in Rotterdam aged 14-16 years in two schools; Calvijn and Comenius colleges particularly from their peer solidarity and socialization processes. HAVO is one of the four streams of secondary education in Holland referred to as Senior general secondary education (HAVO). The stream takes five years and qualifies students to enter higher vocational education (HBO). Some students can also choose to enter pre-university secondary education VWO or MBO education (Dutch Education Journal, 2007). The analysis is based on both qualitative and quantitative findings from Focus Group Discussions (FDGs), structured and semistructured interviews, drawings, observations and questionnaires. This study considers both the advantages and disadvantages of youth engagement in new media. The study also attempt to contribute to the wider development discourses in the field of children and youth. The conclusion for this book highlights how new media has played a role in the youth cultures in structuring their peer relationships. Throughout the study, pseudo names are used for ethical reasons. ...6. Student and School Data Data collected from and about students, including school-level data, are an important part of the assessment. These data are useful in the identification of the proportion of youth in the community who claim gang membership or who are at high risk for gang membership. School-level data and information from school staff are vital to rounding out the picture of gang activity in the community. This chapter provides guidance on collecting data on the following:    Student characteristics and disciplinary actions School-aged youths’ perceptions of gangs and gang activity (student survey) School staff perspectives on gang activity on campus Prevalence of Gangs in Schools In the mid-1990s, 28 percent of the national sample of students reported that gangs were present in their schools (Chandler, Chapman, Rand, and Taylor, 1998). This number dropped to 17 percent in 1999 and then increased to 24 percent in 2005, almost the level reported a decade earlier (Dinkes, Cataldi, Kena et al., 2006). Thus respondents to the national survey of students reported a decrease in gang activity in the late 1990s and an increase in the opening years of this century. Impact of Gangs in Schools Where they have a substantial community presence, youth gangs are linked with serious delinquency problems in elementary and secondary schools across the United States (Chandler, Chapman, Rand, and Taylor, 1998). This study of data gathered in the School Crime Supplement to the 1995...
