Yet there is relatively little guidance offered in the management literature on how to acquire vision. This paper describes practices that facilitate scenario planning so that it becomes a process for creating shared vision. Most of the work on scenarios addresses the mechanics of scenario construction. Those authors adopt a planning perspective and suggest scenario planning can benefit organizations by stimulating creative thinking about the future or improving forecasts. The Scenarios-to-Strategies (S2S) approach is presented, and scenario planning is considered from a communication perspective. Facilitation practices that enhance traditional scenario-building processes are presented which support the social processes of constructing shared vision. These operate on the layer of participants' cognitive processes, to integrate the different participants' views into a unified, shared framework that heightens understanding and commitment. The oldest thermometer employed to find the atmospheric temperature was from Germany. But the disadvantage is we can go back only 200 years or so. To find the facet of climate before those periods, we use ICE. Ice cores from Antarctica and Greenland are drilled and studied. As snow falls on Earth, which is mostly Ocean, it sinks in due to higher density and so the deeper we drill the Ice cores from, the older the temperature records we will end up analyzing. How do we do this study? Water is made of Hydrogen and Oxygen. There are types of Oxygen, one that weighs 16 and one that weighs 18. These are Atomic weights. This makes the molecules’ weight different. Water that is heavier condenses more readily and water that is lighter evaporates more readily. So near Equator, where the temperature is high the lighter oxygen evaporates more readily as we move to the poles the concentration of Heavier oxygen decreases compared to the concentration of Lighter Oxygen by 5%, since the temperature is lower at the poles and the light water evaporation is reduced. ...1 PROBABILISTIC APPROACHES: SCENARIO ANALYSIS, DECISION TREES AND SIMULATIONS In the last chapter, we examined ways in which we can adjust the value of a risky asset for its risk. Notwithstanding their popularity, all of the approaches share a common theme. The riskiness of an asset is encapsulated in one number – a higher discount rate, lower cash flows or a discount to the value – and the computation almost always requires us to make assumptions (often unrealistic) about the nature of risk. In this chapter, we consider a different and potentially more informative way of assessing and presenting the risk in an investment. Rather than compute an expected value for an asset that that tries to reflect the different possible outcomes, we could provide information on what the value of the asset will be under each outcome or at least a subset of outcomes. We will begin this section by looking at the simplest version which is an analysis of an asset’s value under three scenarios – a best case, most likely case and worse case – and then extend the discussion to look at scenario analysis more generally. We will move on to examine the use of decision trees, a more complete approach to dealing with discrete risk. We will close the chapter by evaluating Monte Carlo simulations, the most complete approach of assessing risk across the spectrum.
