This story is about an adventurous boy named Brother, and his younger brother, Doodle. Brother seems to be a kind, loving person at first glance, but as you look closer you will find that he is actually quit cruel to Doodle. Brother did want to help Doodle in any way he could, however what you don’t realize, is that he helped Doodle for his own benefit. Overall, Brother does help Doodle to do activities he wouldn’t have been able to do without his help, which could make allowance for is choice in behavior, depending on how you look at the situations that come into play in the story “the Scarlet Ibis”. Brother was helpful towards Doodle because he gave him the opportunity to be able to do tasks other kids, Doodles age, could already do. For …show more content…
For example, when Brother took Doodle to see his casket he said, “And before I’ll help you down from the loft, you’re going to have to touch it.” This was before Doodle knew how to walk so if he was left in the loft, he would not have been able to get down. Brother truly did have a dark side to himself. The fact that Brother wanted Doodle to know that he was supposed to die is atrocious. Brother might not have completely hated Doodle, but he certainly seemed to find enjoyment in making Doodle upset. In conjunction, Brother was also cruel to Doodle when he left Doodle in the rain that brother described as nettles that stung his face. Brother had ran so fast Doodle couldn’t catch up. And by the time he had realized, Doodle had already died beneath a red nightshade bush beside the road. This show the read that, in a way, Brother was indirectly responsible for Doodle’s death. If brother hadn’t left Doodle the maybe he would have had a better chance at surviving. If Brother knew the outcome for leaving Doodle, chances are he would’ve given a second thought to his decision knowing that it would have such a permanent reaction. In conclusion, Brother was inhumane to Doodle at times. But in the end, Brother never did fully intent to directly be mean to doodle. It was more of a side effect of Brother’s bad choices. Some of things Doodle went though were absolutely terrible, there’s no doubt about it. However, Brother gave Doodle a better life then he was original given. In a wat, that does make up for all the awful events the Brother put Doddle though. Overall, Doodle did have a better life as a whole due to

Scarlet Ibis Theme

...In the gruesome first person narration of “The Scarlet Ibis” written by James Hurst. The author tries to show people that excessive pride can not only hurt oneself but can be harmful to others. This is shown by the thoughts and words of Brother, it is also shown by the reactions of other characters. In the short story the thoughts of Brother really have an impact on the theme. Brother’s thoughts cause Brother’s pride to become fairly ignorant. This can be seen as early as the fourth paragraph where he thinks, “It was bad enough having an invalid brother, but having one who possibly was not all there was unbearable, so i began to make plans to kill him by smothering him with a pillow,” (163). In this time his pride wouldn't let him have an invalid brother so he planned on killing him. Even though he doesn't kill him in the end his ignorant actions cause Doodle to die, “ I ran as fast as i could, leaving him far behind with a wall of rain dividing us,” (172). Because of this...

Scarlet Ibis Pride Quotes

...According to John C. Maxwell “There are two types of pride, both good and bad. ‘Good pride’ represents our dignity and self-respect. ‘Bad pride’ is the deadly sin of superiority that reeks of conceit and arrogance.” In the “Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, the main character and narrator, Brother shows how his pride affects his life and those around him. The reader can see William Armstrong (Doodle)’s character through Brother’s eyes. Brother shows pride by direct words he expresses towards Doodle and the people around him. ...Mosque A wedding Midnight Abracadabra Book One The perforated sheet I was born in the city of Bombay ... once upon a time. No, that won't do, there's no getting away from the date: I was born in Doctor Narlikar's Nursing Home on August 15th, 1947. And the time? The time matters, too. Well then: at night. No, it's important to be more ... On the stroke of midnight, as a matter of fact. Clock-hands joined palms in respectful greeting as I came. Oh, spell it out, spell it out: at the precise instant of India's arrival at independence, I tumbled forth into the world. There were gasps. And, outside the window, fireworks and crowds. A few seconds later, my father broke his big toe; but his accident was a mere trifle when set beside what had befallen me in that benighted moment, because thanks to the occult tyrannies of those blandly saluting clocks I had been mysteriously handcuffed to history, my destinies indissolubly chained to those of my country. For the next three decades, there was to be...
