In “The Lost Battalion” General Alexander states what he thinks are acceptable losses are. In the beginning of the movie Major Whittlesey states “I lost a platoon just probing that area this morning”, General Alexander replys “We have to live with acceptable losses, Major”. Which is morally wrong and somewhat apathetic, this is shown a couple times within the movie General Alexander was indeed technically “in” the war but he was nowhere close to the actual combat himself. He could of never known what happened emotionally, physically and mentally to the men in combat. Each and every time the men went into the battle many of them died. They were extremely low on essential materials like food, ammunition, and basic medical supplies. They were …show more content…
This caused many casualties and not to mention terrible long term memories from the horror. This is proved by the statement Lipasti makes regarding General Alexander's comment about the planes not finding them and the attack “Well... your artillery certainly found it, General”. Even their own side actually caused them casualties. Making the soldiers continue to fight even though they just witness their friends being blown up by their own side. Mistakes do happen, but this was completely and utter unacceptable. It didn’t help that in the movie they had no backup or extra forces that all, they had to fight till they won or they basically all died. Which is not what a good, functioning platoon represents and their superiors should of never thought that it was time to stop, or they had already done enough damage. Overall, what was thought to be acceptable completely wasn’t. It is nowhere near considered an “acceptable loss” for so many mass casualties, their constant PTSD they will most likely have, destruction of soldiers families, the fear of their own men bombing, the poor conditions and unknowing General of what the men went through, all for what?
