Today i had the privilege to interview my Mother. She was born in Haiti and have been living in the U.S for over twenty years.

What inspired you to become a U.S. citizen? Well I was inspired to become a U.S citizen because in Haiti there isn’t that much freedom, light, food, and clean water. There is a lot of voodoo practice happening in Haiti and I wanted to get away from all of that.

What steps did you have to take as part of the naturalization process? It wasn’t really too much steps to take of the naturalization process. I’ve took english classes in Haiti, soo english wasn’t something new to me. I was nervous when i was driving to take my exam. They ask me three question and one written response. After that I had to recite the pledge of allegiance

How would you describe how you felt about the process? I felt that they took too long to call me in to go take the exam. It took over two years for them to call me in.

How has gaining citizenship changed your life? Is your daily life different because of gaining citizenship? Gaining citizenship didn’t really change my life cause i was doing same thing i was doing before i gain citizenship. My daily life isn’t different because where I work doesn’t really ask if you’re a citizen or not as long you could work, you get the job.

Do you feel the process was worthwhile? The process wasn’t really worthwhile because I’m trying to enter my kids from into the U.S and it’s taking years to get thru the process.

If you had to, would you do it again? Please explain. I would do it again but i wish the process wouldn’t take as long as it did.

Do you miss Haiti ? No not really cause I still visit over there when i have a chance.
