1.3 The impact associated with ageing older people-
Physical- physically the individual could feel like they can still do things they did 20 years ago, but changes to their physical body like energy levels drop, fatigue, health problems etc can limit them doing things and trying to remain active. They can fall more frequently and may need to use aids to assist with this. Physically changing can cause the individual to get depressed, lack confidence, have anxiety issues and become fearful as they cannot do the things they used to.
Emotional – The individual can become depressed, fearful, low self esteem, suffer anxiety problems, have low confidence because as they age their body, Lifestyle, social life and health changes and this can limit them from having a life …show more content…
Their friends maybe in the same situation and have health and ageing problems, limiting them t have a social life. Individuals may not be able to get out due to being unable to get to events due to transport problems or the buildings are not adapted for the elderly with walking aids or wheelchairs. Some individuals will try and remain as sociable as they can and join community groups, visit friends and try and stay active if their health and body allows it.
Cognitive – Some individuals cognitive skills are not as good as it used to be and slight memory loss is common in ageing. It can get some individuals down and they can feel very frustrated at forgetting things. In some cases it can lead to dementia/Alzheimer’s. This can be very scary and be a hard time for the individual and their family/friends. It is important to try and encourage individuals to remain active physically and mentally e,g do puzzles or get outside for fresh air. These things can help the individual feel better and help keep their mind

...EFFECT OF AGE ON SHORT TERM MEMORY ABSTRACT: Age associated declines in cognitive processes are important to the understanding of the human mind. This study investigates the relationship between ageing and short term memory in particular, by first exploring current cognitive and neuroscientific research involving concepts such as short term/working memory, long term memory and ageing, and secondly, by means of a short term memory experiment involving verbal and numerical stimuli, that was administered to two age groups- 20 to 40 year old adults and 50 to 70 year olds. The results of the experiment were then analysed using the ANOVA statistical software programme. The results did not conclusively show age related decline in short term memory performance in all segments of the test. Memory decline with increased age was apparent in the free recall word stimuli, and in the analyses of the number of incorrectly remembered words. The serial recall digit sequence did not show any statistically significant effects. The final section of this study addresses the possible explanations for the results, as well as the limitations of the study.
