HERB COCHRAN
Executive Director AmCham Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City Chapter
Mr. Cochran has lived in Vietnam for about 10 years, in various cities such as Can Tho, Hanoi, and now Ho Chi Minh City. Previously, Mr. Cochran worked for the US State Department, US Commerce Department, and US Embassy in Japan and Thailand.

“I would like to see AmCham Scholarship expand to other cities such as Can Tho, Da Nang and Da Lat.”
AmCham Scholarship started out as an idea for community development. From there, we created a selective program to find the most outstanding Vietnamese students. Through this process, we hoped to find the best employees for AmCham companies. We thought this investment would generate benefits for both the companies and the community at large. The AmCham HR Committee then stepped up to take real leadership in designing the program and winners selection. It was the Vietnamese staff of AmCham companies on the HR Committee who decided the process, the application, the English language test, the ability test (now the Profile assessment) and the interview. By reaching out to young students and introducing them to maybe their first interaction with an international organization, I think this Scholarship has offered AmCham Companies a chance to contribute to the community development, economic and social development of Vietnam. The students have a relatively intense interaction period of about three months via the Internet, the application, the English language test, and the interview. It is an extensive period that students can interact with an international organization and learn more about the world outside of Vietnam. My greatest impression about this scholarship is the intelligence and English communication skills of Vietnamese students. I'm always so surprised and happy to see that they have prepared themselves carefully. This good effort will set them on a positive path for success, either with the companies they joined or the universities of their additional education. I don't want to reveal any secrets but I read many of the applications myself. It's very interesting to see the thoughts, the feelings and the ambitions that the students expressed in their applications. The AmCham Scholar Alumni is also an example of high quality Vietnamese applicants for AmCham Scholarship. After having gone through the process, Scholars want to share their experience with each other and with the students coming behind them. They also want to share their experience with their companies and to help those who helped them. People often say “biết ơn” and “nhớ ơn”, but sometimes you don't hear people say “trả ơn”. When the AmCham Scholars help us out, that is “trả ơn”, and I really appreciate their support.

The 10 year of AmCham Scholarship 10 years of contribution to Vietnamese talents
With the commitment to support Vietnamese young generations, American Chamber of Commerce at Ho Chi Minh City (AmCham Vietnam) has granted the AmCham Scholarship to students who has strong potential and excellent performance in academic study as well as in community service. Moreover, the AmCham Scholarship program, with the involvement of AmCham Human Resources Committee members and top executives of AmCham member companies, is also part of the business group's efforts to contribute to community development in Vietnam. It is 10 years from 2001, AmCham Vietnam has established, operated, developed the AmCham Scholarship, and found out the most talented students deserved for the awards. Over this 10-year period, based on the expansion of the partnership between AmCham Vietnam and the local universities as well as the sponsorship from AmCham member companies, the number and the quality of applicants and granted students has improved significantly. In 2001, merely 10 excellent students out of 115 applicants won the prize after passing all the selection rounds, whereas in 2010, the number of applicants surged to approximately 700, the best 40 of which were chosen for this honor grant. After receiving AmCham Scholarship and graduating from universities, many of AmCham Scholar Alumni (ASA) have achieved great success in various studying and working fields. Among these, more than 37% ASA are doing Master and PhD, and nearly over 50% of those are studying and working overseas. Besides, every AmCham Scholar has strived for moving forward to obtain certain position in his or her career path. In order to create challenges and opportunities to discover the potential of these talents, and build up a strong community among AmCham Scholars, there must be the concerted effort from AmCham Scholarship's sponsors and partners. First of all, the sponsorship has increased gradually for the sake of raising the number of scholarship and improving the quality of the program. This precious support, in fact, strongly shows the businesses' growing concern about the community development. As regards the partnership, Vietnam National University – HCMC, the group of top universities in Ho Chi Minh City, has become the longest partner in 10 year times. Up to 2010, this partnership was expanded with the participation of Foreign Trade University in Ho Chi Minh City and Hoa Sen University. Along with this expansion is the impressive growth in the eligible universities for the scholarship in 2010 up to 10, including University of Technology, University of Natural Sciences, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Economics and Law, University of Information Technology, International University, Hoa Sen University, Foreign Trade University, Banking University and HCMC University of Law. AmCham Vietnam presently are aiming to keep broadening the scholarship to universities to approach potential students not only in Ho Chi Minh City, but also in other cities and provinces in Vietnam so as to nurture more and more young talents, help them perceive their own capabilities and well equip them with necessary skills before entering the labor market. 2010 is the 10th year of AmCham Scholarship and marks the 10-year time of development and contribution. AmCham Vietnam and the AmCham Scholarship Team promise to bring about the best value to the scholarship program and to the Vietnamese talents so that, in return, they can benefit their own community.

AmCham Scholarship Review

Dr. LE THI THANH MAI
Acting Director of Students Affairs Department – VNU-HCM (10 years in partnership development)
At the beginning of 2010, Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCMC) celebrates its 15th anniversary (27/1/1995 - 27/1/2010) of development. In 15 years, VNUHCMC has always received valuable supports from many - both local and foreign organizations and corporations. Throughout the journey, the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) is one of the most valuable partners.

TRAN HUU DUC
Director of Training Center of Trung Nguyen Corporation Chair of AmCham HR Committee 2000
In 2000, Mr. Duc was the Chair of AmCham HR Committee. Initially, he was one of the co-founders of AmCham Scholarship.

“Students have a much better chance when applying for a job with the title of AmCham Scholar, especially with an AmCham company.”
Human resources play an important and decisive role in development. Training students to become highqualified resources, to satisfy requirement for national development is the top priority of Vietnamese universities at the moment. Vietnamese universities, in which VNU-HCMC is the leader, are trying to accomplish this task. In the international integration trend, cooperative relationship between Vietnam and America has strengthened and expanded, including education and training. AmCham Scholarship is not only a financial support but also an important encouragement for excellent Vietnamese students in general, and VNU-HCMC's students in particular. Moreover, it's the contribution of AmCham to the development of socio-economics in creating high-profile employees who response to the demand of industrialization and modernization of Vietnam. The support of AmCham to VNU-HCMC does not only count in the number of 95,000 USD scholarship cash and 19,600 USD ability training, but also involves the active interaction between universities and corporations. Indeed, in order to receive the scholarship, students must overcome rigorous and serious examinations from experts of AmCham Human Resources Committee. Every year, the results of AmCham Scholarship stands as a beneficial reference channel for schools to adjust their programs and methods, especially in soft skills training. AmCham Scholarship has achieved 10-year partnership with students of VNU-HCMC. VNU-HCMC will always treasure the tremendous support of AmCham in the past years. VNU-HCMC believes that the 10 years also marks the turning point in cooperation between AmCham and VNU-HCMC towards high-qualified human resources and socio-economic and international development in Vietnam. At that time, I was very enthusiastic about the AmCham Scholarship program. The program gave me a chance to implement my dream of creating an award to honor and encourage young Vietnamese talents. In the beginning, we had to cope with many difficulties of establishing collaboration with Vietnamese universities. However, the warm support and open welcome from Vietnam National University was a great motivation for us to push forward. The next difficulties were how to use the media to aid scholarship activities and call for test sponsors (English and ability tests). Volunteers in the HR Committee were making great contribution to the selection process. At first, I worried that we could not find enough people with the same sense of purpose. Nonetheless, the program received wholehearted support from the HR Committee, universities and students. I'm very glad to see that this program has been developed and expanded. AmCham Scholarship has become one of the parameters to measure a student's readiness for the working world. I think the greatest benefit AmCham Scholarship offers to students is the recognition itself. Students have a much better chance when applying for a job with the title of AmCham Scholar, especially with an AmCham company. Additionally, as members of AmCham Scholar Alumni, they are given certain privileges. By joining the ASA family, students are making a great leap into the professional working environment. That's a very good sign that students are more proactive and clear career oriented. Looking back, I am so proud of how AmCham Scholarship has developed. The way AmCham Scholars are coming back to support the program is a sustainable model and should be developed. In terms of its selection criteria, I am looking forward to seeing some practical adjustments that could be more suitable for Vietnam. AmCham Scholar Alumni also needs to prepare the fresh graduates for a journey toward success.

LE QUY DON
VP, Head of Human Resources AIA (Vietnam) Life Insurance Co., Ltd. Chair of AmCham HR Committee 2003
Mr. Don was one of the initial founders and developers of AmCham Scholarship.

WINNIE LAM
Director of KCS Vietnam Chair of AmCham HR Committee 2009 - 2010
Ms. Lam has been a dedicated supporter of AmCham Scholarship since 2009. Currently on behalf of AmCham HR Committee, Ms. Lam is the leading advisor for AmCham Scholarship.

“The AmCham Scholar Alumni community has forever been and will continuously be the union of talented and creative professionals.”
In 2000, the AmCham HR Committee had an idea to establish a scholarship program for Vietnamese students. At that time, I was working with Coca-Cola and it was my first year as a HR Committee member. The starting goal was to form collaboration with Vietnamese universities in Ho Chi Minh City. In the beginning, we faced tremendous difficulties between AmCham and the universities' Board of Directors. However, thanks to the undying enthusiasm of AmCham HR Committee, the very first string to connect AmCham and the National University was threaded. Soon after, we were accepted and welcomed by many other Universities who recognized the reputation of the program. Together with my co-founders, our team built six selection criteria for AmCham Scholarship. Those criteria were communication skills, initiatives, achievement orientation, innovation, analytical ability and problem solving skills. These skills were desired and created by HR Directors from AmCham HR Committee. Even today, such criteria are commonly applied and expected from students who are preparing to enter the working world. To select among students with very similar abilities is always difficult for interviewers. It's very impressive that AmCham Scholarship candidates have amazingly broad knowledge and they answer questions very smartly. I'm also impressed with the number of AmCham Scholars who continue to study for postgraduate degrees. I strongly believe that in the near future, AmCham Scholarship will not be geographically restrained anymore and will spread to other cities outside of Ho Chi Minh City. I also believe the value of AmCham Scholarship does not lie in its monetary prize but mainly in its post activities with AmCham Scholar Alumni (ASA). ASA has forever been and will continuously be the union of talented and creative professionals.

“AmCham Scholarship is beyond winning a scholarship. It is the opportunity to go through a selection process similar to that of most leading organization and growing from it.”
I was a teacher by trade and a career counselor later, working on AmCham Scholarship is a great opportunity for me to work with the students again. When AmCham Scholars asked me to supervise the organizing team, I readily agreed. During my first interview session in 2009, I was very impressed with the students' English communication skills which were far beyond my expectations and a feeling shared by many others. I saw it in the way they carried themselves and the level of comfort they had while using the English language. It was definitely very encouraging. To find academically bright students is one thing, but to find students who are academically capable and socially responsible is part of the AmCham Scholarship mission. These days, school is becoming even more competitive. Everybody is spending a lot of time trying to get good results. What AmCham Scholarship seeks, is more than intelligence academically but the awareness to grow into an all rounded individual, spending time to care beyond one's studies and know to play as a team member. Students are starting to understand that exposure to the outside-of-school world is important and it is evidence from the application we are receiving. Our Scholarship applications have been increasing steadily over the years in quantity and quality. Overall, it confirms the fact that Vietnam is a place of potential. The greatest impression working with the AmCham Scholarship program is of one person who spent an entire morning “warming up” the students at our 2009 Interview Day. Our AmCham Executive Director, Mr. Herb Cochran, spent time sitting in the waiting room talking with students just about anything that came to mind. He calmly talked about life in general, about Vietnam and small daily routines. Those small exchanges really helped students relaxed and created a welcoming atmosphere. So much so that we are appointing Mr Cochran our “Warm Up Ambassador” this year and I am sure the students had enjoyed it. This year and going forward, we are trying to give students a chance to have the interview in English with a native speaker. It's very different when you are speaking with a native speaker than when you are speaking with your fellow Vietnamese in English. We hope to give the experience that AmCham Scholarship is not just about winning a scholarship. It is the opportunity to go through a selection process; of the chance to interact with someone of a senior level and perhaps an expat, to experience something otherwise foreign and unfamiliar.

HARIHARAN KANNAN
Vice President of HR PepsiCo Vietnam

HO THI BACH QUYEN
Staffing Manager, PepsiCo Vietnam AmCham Scholar 2005
Since 2005, Ms. Quyên has been a committed member of AmCham Scholar Alumni. This year, Ms. Quyên is one of the organizers of AmCham Scholarship. She leads the Process Team.

Mr. Kannan has worked in many organizations through out Asia. He has spent 13 years with PepsiCo, in which the last two years have been here with PepsiCo Vietnam. PepsiCo Vietnam has been a loyal AmCham Scholarship sponsor since 2009.

“AmCham Scholarship fits in well with our Performance with Purpose Agenda of PepsiCo Vietnam.”
PepsiCo Vietnam started the initiative to support AmCham Scholarship because we want to support talent development in an emerging market. Moreover, we do not want to find talents just for our company, but we feel that it is our responsibility as a corporate citizen to support talent development for Vietnam. We feel that AmCham Scholarship fits in well with our overall values and Talent Sustainability agenda. Therefore, we are pleased to partner with AmCham for this program. Vietnam is a strong and dynamic nation and a very important market for PepsiCo. As we grow bigger and stronger, so does our need for the right talent to sustain this growth. Developing talents is the same as developing our economy. Ultimately, there should be a collaborative effort between the government, companies such as PepsiCo, and organizations like AmCham, to work together and contribute to the nation's human capital development. When all forces joined together, we will more likely succeed. For us, the real benefit of sponsorship is long term and much more than the sponsorship benefits on paper. It is not about whether you will give us a stall, or where you will put PepsiCo logo on a banner. Do not get me wrong. We do need that. However, branding is not our driving force. From a macro point of view, we are impacting the country as a whole. The biggest benefit is staying in touch with the talents. We are contributing to the development of talents and this fits in well with our Performance with Purpose agenda of PepsiCo. Through the AmCham Scholarship sponsorship, PepsiCo not only help identify the right talents for the economy but we also gain something in return; such as a pool of talented resources. In fact, we have several AmCham Scholars working with us as key managers. We are very proud of them.

“AmCham Scholarship gave me the greatest gift of opportunity.”

AmCham Scholar Alumni (ASA) has brought me many unforgettable memories. I received AmCham Scholarship in 2005 and have participated in ASA Executive Team ever since. As a member, I've helped organize many ASA activities., for example, team building trips, inviting speakers to our seminar and participating in AmCham Scholarship program. The members are incredibly enthusiastic. Through the years, we've spent valuable time together running ASA activities and helping AmCham with some of its major functions. One of my favorite ASA stories is the romance between my fellow classmate - Nguyen Thi Thanh Van, AmCham Scholar 2005 and a senior ASA member from the University of Natural Sciences. The couple fell in love and went study abroad together. They are a beautiful ASA couple. Though intangible, the benefits from AmCham Scholarship are invaluable to me. AmCham Scholarship gave me the greatest gift of opportunity. Through many rounds of the selection process, I had the chance to be familiarized with professional recruitment, which equipped me precious experiences to participate in Management Trainee Program of PepsiCo Vietnam. Furthermore, AmCham Scholarship gave me the opportunity to find and make lifelong friends. The advice and career consultation from senior ASA members have helped me tremendously in my professional and personal development. I hope the quality of the program will improve even more in the future. AmCham Scholarship's mission is to select and develop Vietnamese talents. We have done well in the selection process to choose these potential seeds and it will be much more impactful if we can have a long-term agreement or partnership with companies for internship or career development program. This will increase the prestige of our scholarship program as well as the contribution of ASA.

AmCham Scholarship is a great opportunity of networking

“AmCham Scholarship gave me motivation, a precious belief that “Yes, I can do it!”

AmCham Scholarship brought me great opportunities to work closely with AmCham HR Committee Members, some of them then become my friends, and we still keep in touch although I am no longer an AmCham staff. And working with AmCham Scholars Alumni is another great experience. The Alumni network is a team of active and intelligent members. I have high regard and respect for their voluntary attitude. When we needed volunteers for a Charity Apparel Sale for example, they came and helped in a very trustworthy and professional way. The quality of AmCham Scholarship is immeasurable. The program's qualification process consists of many challenging rounds that require candidates to exert their greatest efforts in order to obtain the highest results. I am so pleased to see AmCham Scholarship has grown into a highly respected program by students and companies alike. I am happy to see AmCham Scholarship expanding to more universities and more students can take part in this challenging opportunity.

It has been quite a long time since I was awarded the AmCham Scholarship. My primary purpose of participating in the program was to challenge myself. I realized that AmCham Scholarship requirements were altogether directed at more general knowledge, leadership ability and teamwork. The most impressive part for me was the interview session. I had a chance to be interviewed by a panel of three interviewers. We discussed various topics ranging from general issues to particular scenarios. The interview allowed me to expose myself in greater depths and demonstrated my very best abilities. Obtaining the scholarship was indeed a very memorable and prideful moment for me. There were only ten of us that year. We were young and inexperienced but we could recognize that AmCham Scholarship is a high quality program with great assets to the business community. Its reputation would open doors to many large corporations. More importantly, this scholarship gave me the motivation to succeed, a precious belief that “Yes, I can do it!” That mentality was essential in keeping me thriving for better results. I can see that AmCham Scholarship is developing very well in terms of quality and quantity. In the beginning, we tried to focus more on academic achievements but gradually we're balancing between professional and academic performance. Even more, we are placing high importance to the post-award activities. For the time being, these activities are carried out in a reasonable manner, thanks to the fact that AmCham Scholar Alumni (ASA) members are from similar age group. However, this advantage will not remain for long as ASA is getting bigger and more diverse, resulting in different individuals and groups with dissimilar trends and focus. Thus, the concern is how can we hold events and activities in which different generations can support each other in a sustainable model and create effective results.

Mr. Rick Yvanovic established TRG International in 1994 and over the last 13 years has developed the company into many branches in Luxembourg, Switzerland, Singapore and Vietnam. Currently, Profiles International is one of the leading sponsors of AmCham Scholarship, and has been sponsoring the program with the ProfilesXT Assessment since 2009.

“AmCham Scholar Alumni is an organization full of excellent individuals with different backgrounds, characteristics and career perspectives.”
Participating in AmCham Scholarship and becoming one of the winners helped me perceive my own capabilities and values. Back in 2003, when previous scholars were invited to an AmCham seminar, Mr. Herb Cochran was the first person to raise the idea of gathering all AmCham Scholars together. The idea was developed and led to the foundation of AmCham Scholar Alumni (ASA) in 2004 with its first 10 members. In the early years, there were just a few activities but we were very close. Even now, when the number of members has increased and we are not as close as we used to, it's undeniable that the younger generations are incredibly diverse and dynamic. They carry with them passionate energy and fresh ideas for all of us to learn from. ASA is an organization full of excellent individuals from different backgrounds, characteristics and career perspectives. We came together to contribute to the development of AmCham Scholarship and our organization AmCham Scholar Alumni. Personally, ASA has brought a positive change to me. Engaging in ASA activities has helped me discover more about myself and gain confidence which is definitely advantageous for my career. Moreover, ASA has long become the second life of mine. I enjoy the opportunity of giving back to the community and bringing better opportunities to young Vietnamese talents. I hope that the ASA framework will grow bigger in order to facilitate more opportunities for students to compete and succeed. Furthermore, the quality should be consistent throughout the years. As ASA is growing, getting to know the members' needs and providing more benefits are important. The next generation of ASA should be more pro-active in taking over ASA activities. We, the old ones, will support you the best way that we can.

“We should help identify the students' career prospects, show them a path they can walk, and will walk.”
I think AmCham Scholarship is one of AmCham Vietnam's greatest programs. As a sponsor, I look forward to seeing our assessment products providing benefits to both the students and selection team. I would love to have the selection criteria augmented so that it will select people who will likely succeed, not just those who are academically brighter. Frankly, our sponsoring is not about bringing physical benefits to our end. As founders, we should help identify the students' career prospects, show them a path they can walk, and will walk. If we can do this, even the current monetary package will not be as rewarding as what we can offer to students. From my perspective, I think AmCham Scholarship needs to focus more on how to monitor and study the Vietnamese talents. That is the reason why Profiles International Vietnam wants to support this program. We want to research the Scholars' common winning traits and performance along their career path. With those findings, we expect a birth of a practical method for predicting one's probabilities to be successful. We hope to deliver a product to support the program and analyze more than just academic performance. We truly believe that it will be better for the community when organizations such as AmCham Vietnam and AmCham Scholar Alumni help to train and prepare the right talents for the right work. On our part, Profiles International is ready to do what we can to contribute to this journey and development.

TIEU YEN TRINH
General Director of TalentNet Chair of AmCham HR Committee 2006
Ms. Trinh was an interviewer for AmCham Scholarship Interview Session from 2005 to 2007. She is currently the General Director at TalentNet HR Consultant. TalentNet was an AmCham Scholarship Sponsor in 2008.

NGUYEN THI THANH VAN
MBA, Rochester Institute of Technology, New York AmCham Scholar 2005
Ms. Vân was a member of the AmCham Scholar Alumni Executive Team from 2005 to 2009. Other than being an AmCham Scholar 2005, she is also a Fulbright Fellow and currently doing her MBA in Rochester, New York.

“The greatest benefit I gained was the valuable connection with the students themselves.”
The role of an AmCham Scholarship interviewer brought me many interesting memories. I had the opportunity to discuss different ideas with the talented students. Regardless of my role, I realized that I have learned many wonderful things from the students themselves. Over the years, AmCham Scholars have become more assertive, enthusiastic and positive. Their language skills have also improved greatly over time. Usually, all interview sessions had to follow a specific outline. Therefore, the impressions and fascinations did not happen in the actual interviews. Most of the excitement happened “behind-the-scenes”. I remember the discussion we had after one interview. At that moment, flows of information were revealed. We were under a feeling of such great excitement! Those impressions continued to create the connection between many of the students and I long after the interview. For me, the greatest benefit I gained from those interview sessions was the valuable connection with the students themselves. Overall, AmCham Scholarship is a high-quality program for companies to contribute to the community. On behalf of TalentNet, I can say that we did not sponsor AmCham Scholarship because of any tangible benefits. We supported the program because we wanted to contribute to community development, support the students and the development of AmCham HR Committee. However, as a community, we still have many challenges to overcome. One of which is the large gap between the rate of outstanding students and average students at our local Universities. Together, we need to face this challenge and figure how to bridge this gap.

“Winning $500 USD is not as valuable as the intangible benefits you gain from participating in AmCham Scholar Alumni activities.”
I've learned a lot from my experience with AmCham Scholar Alumni (ASA). I am happy to say that ASA members are incredibly bright, enthusiastic and supportive. Through the years, we have established a wonderful relationship within our network. I still remember that when I was mapping out the next course of my life, I decided to turn to senior ASA members for their advice. They inspired me to pick up the new career path and enter a field that I had never thought of before. I am proud to be a member of AmCham Scholar Alumni. Noticeably, when I applied for the Fulbright Scholarship, my strong commitment to ASA and to helping the students became a competitive advantage over other applicants. I would like to share my personal story which would never have happened if I were not an ASA member: I met my husband, Đặng Bác Văn, in an ASA 's team building trip. Văn is an AmCham Scholar 2004 and graduated from University of Natural Sciences. Văn won Vietnam Education Foundation Fellowship (VEF) and now we both are studying in the United States. Sometimes it is so sweet thinking of how ASA network just simply changed my life! Given the huge benefits from this network (hopefully they would turn out to be as special to you as they did to me), I hope that new AmCham Scholars would participate actively in ASA activities and support the growth of AmCham Scholarship Program and AmCham Scholar Alumni. In short, I've found life-time friendship since joining ASA, and believe it will happen the same to you.

Interview with Nguyen Ngoc Ha and Le Tran Anh Dung (AmCham Scholars 2009)

Interview with the two fresh ASA 2009

Interview with the two fresh ASA 2009

NGUYEN NGOC HA & LE TRAN ANH DUNG
AmCham Scholars 2009
Now that you know more about AmCham Scholarship, how does this make you feel? How is this different from when you received your scholarship last year? Ngoc Ha: AmCham Scholarship is a really challenging program. At first, I applied for the scholarship to challenge myself without thinking of receiving USD $500. After joining ASA, I feel that what I received was more than the money, such as valuable experiences from older AmCham Scholars. In spite of our differences, we are very happy together and we will always have something in common, that is the AmCham Scholarship experience. Anh Dung: To me, AmCham Scholarship is the starting point to uncover my talent. Since I joined ASA, I have found myself improving a great deal day by day. I have developed my team spirit, learned how to plan a program and widened my vision through ideas exchange with other members. What is your greatest impression about AmCham Scholars and AmCham Scholar Alumni? Ngoc Ha: Firstly, AmCham Scholars are very successful. They all have great success in their education, their careers and their lives. Secondly, they are very dedicated. After receiving AmCham Scholarship, they all want to give back to the community as much as they can. Anh Dung: My greatest impression about ASA can be expressed in two words, “happy and friendly”. Of course, the members in ASA are all talented and dynamic but I would like to emphasize the above characteristics. Those words play an important role in the development of each ASA member. They are the core factors that bridge the gap among members. In particular, the majority of ASA members are professionals in their fields with great experience and knowledge. Therefore, if one ASA member encounters problems in his work or study, he will receive tremendous support from other members no matter where he is in the world. What is your expectation for the future of AmCham Scholarship? Ngoc Ha: At the moment, we have a very high quality program with a professional management team. I wish that AmCham Scholarship would expand to many more universities. The objective of the program is to identify and develop young talents. Therefore, if we offer this opportunity to more students we could increase our chance of discovering more talents, and in turns, expand our ASA network. However, the quality is also our priority. Anh Dung: First, I hope that AmCham Scholarship will be able to continue its goal of nurturing Vietnamese talents. After receiving the scholarship, students still need more opportunities for further improvements. AmCham Scholarship could invest and develop more in postscholarship activities, such as seminars and teambuilding trips. I really hope that one day, ASA will become a group of successful Vietnamese business leaders. In particular, perhaps AmCham companies could support with a professional training program for the Scholars. Those kinds of investment will take AmCham Scholarship one-step further, from the first phase of receiving the scholarship to nurturing the next generation of Vietnamese talents.

Recently graduated from the Foreign Trade University, Ngoc Ha and Anh Dung are two active members of AmCham Scholar Alumni (ASA). In 2010, Ha and Dung lead a small team of AmCham Scholars to interview some important figures of AmCham Scholarship. They also lead their team in putting together the AmCham Scholarship Directory.

Briefly describe your task this year for AmCham Scholarship. What do you think about the experience? What have you learned? Ngoc Ha: After I received the scholarship, Mr. Nguyen Minh Tam, AmCham Scholar 2002 suggested me to join AmCham Scholarship Management Team. We have just finished doing the interviews and are now working on the AmCham Scholarship Directory. So far, this job has provided me valuable opportunities to expand my relationship, exchange ideas, and gain work experience. Anh Dung: During my short time with ASA and AmCham Scholarship Management Team, I have gained incredible experience. This experience truly exceeds all of my previous expectation. I have had opportunities to improve my communication skills, widen my viewpoints and develop close rapports with many members in our group. Many of the people you interviewed are important figures in the history of AmCham Scholarship, how does it feel to interview them? Ngoc Ha: I feel very fortunate for the opportunity to interview these important figures of AmCham Scholarship. While interviewing them, Dung and I learned valuable lessons from their experiences, viewpoints and strategic visions. Furthermore, we now have a better understanding of their dedication to the program.
28 AmCham Scholarship Directory - 10th Anniversary

Anh Dung: I feel very lucky because only a few fresh graduate, like me, could have this opportunity. I was a bit worried at first because I do not have much experience to interview those high profile figures. Therefore, prior to each interview, my team and I had to prepare very carefully. Through our preparations, I feel that we have learned a lot from this experience. Please share with us any specific impression (stories) you have from this experience. Ngoc Ha: Our very first interview was with Mr. Le Qui Don. I imagined the conversation to be in English. However, there were some aspects that an English interview could not express fully and we had to switch to Vietnamese. In this case, I had to change my style quickly. As the conversation deepened, it was easier for me to catch up with Mr. Don's point of view. Later, as I gained more experience, I learned how to lead the conversation and inspire the interviewees. Anh Dung: This reminds me of our interview with Ms. Tieu Yen Trinh, General Director of TalentNet. While filming, our camcorder suddenly ran out of tape. Fortunately, we had prepared a spare. I made use of the transition time between questions to replace the old tape with the new one. This had to be done quickly so we could keep the interview going smoothly and avoid interrupting the speaker's stream of thought.
