...Issues of Concern in the Study of Children’s Literature Translation Elena Xeni Teaching Staff – Language Pedagogy Department of Education, University of Cyprus Summary The present paper focuses on issues of concern in the study of Children‟s Literature Translation (ChLT). Attempting an overview from the years when ChLT was much ignored in the academic and non-academic world to the years that attention is paid to ChLT as a scientific field in its own right, the present paper illustrates issues that have generated intense and ongoing discussions. Issues such as the missionary role of ChLT, the theoretical framework of ChLT, the translator‟s invisibility, low status, profile and royalties, translatability vs. untranslatability, ideology, censorship, manipulation, and ambivalence are visited in this paper. These issues have had a deep impact on key ChLT actors, processes, and products: the child-reader, the translator, the translated text, the translation process, the author, the publisher, etc. The present text is a modest attempt to join efforts with the international community of scholars, translators, authors, children readers, publishers and other parties with an interest in ChLT, so as for the field to be given its merit in Translation, Comparative, Literary and Interdisciplinary Studies and for the translator –who had for long been much invisible and undervalued –to gain the place s/he deserves in history and society. 1. Introductory note It is widely accepted that Children‟s...

...An Advanced Finite Element Reliability Tool for Stray Current Corrosion Assessments W.H.A. Peelen and W.M.G. Courage*. TNO Built Environment and Geosciences, P.O. Box 49, 2600 AA Delft, The Netherlands, *wim.courage@tno.nl Abstract: This paper describes a model which simulates stray current interference of underground steel structures through a traction power system, which causes accelerated corrosion Also the coupling of this model to a inhome developed reliability software package, Prob2B, is described. This coupling allows to determine the significance of the input parameters on the accelerated corrosion rate. First preliminary calculations show that uncertainty in the soil resistivity and the train power consumption contribute most in the uncertainty in the maximum interference current density. Keywords: Stray current, corrosion, DC traction power, finite element, reliability calculations. dominant uncertainty is assumed to stem from the train power consumption, which depends on whether it is accelerating or breaking. Of all parameters of the processes occurring in the soil probably the natural corrosion rate, which is accelerated by stray current interference, and the acceleration factor are most influential. Therefore these parameters will be assessed specifically, using reliability analysis tools. 2. Stray Current Corrosion Model An electrical circuit analogue, devoid of the spatial distribution of the problem, of traction power induced...

...“So Cute I Could Eat It Up”: Priming Effects of Cute Products on Indulgent Consumption GERGANA Y. NENKOV MAURA L. SCOTT This article examines the extent to which consumers engage in more indulgent consumption when they are exposed to whimsically cute products and explores the process by which such products affect indulgence. Prior research on kindchenschema (baby schema) has found that exposure to cute babies or baby animals leads to more careful behavior (see the study by Sherman, Haidt, and Coan), suggesting restraint. The present research uncovers the opposite: consumers become more indulgent in their behavior after exposure to whimsically cute products. Drawing from research on cognitive priming, kindchenschema, anthropomorphization, indulgence, and regulatory focus, this research posits that exposure to whimsically cute products primes mental representations of fun, increasing consumers’ focus on approaching self-rewards and making consumers more likely to choose indulgent options. These effects do not emerge for kindchenschema cute stimuli, since they prime mental representations of vulnerability and caretaking. Four empirical studies provide evidence for the proposed effects and their underlying process. C ompanies market a rapidly increasing number and variety of cute products across numerous categories, targeting not only children but also adult consumers. The marketplace is replete with cute clothing, utensils, appliances, foods, office supplies, and...

...EXHIBIT 14 Dixon Corporation I. Estimate the Free Cash Flow (FCF) for the Collinsville Plant. The proforma statement is presented in Exhibit 8 of the case. • Estimate the FCF for the period 1980 – 1984 or the period 1980 – 1989. If you use the 10 year forecast, assume the net operating flows are constant from 1984 through 1989, that working capital does not change, i.e., it is zero; and property, plant and equipment (PPE) continues the same trend throughout the 10 year period. Also assume capital investment is $600,000 for the period 1985 through 1989 and assume the depreciation increases $60,000 annually for the period 1985-1989. • Free Cash Flow = Net Operating Profits After Tax + Capital Investment + Change in Working Capital. An inflow of cash is a + and an outflow of cash is a -. The tax rate is .48 and NOPAT = NOP (.52). Capital Investment = change in PPE + depreciation expense, and change in working capital is the change in the three WC items between two years. That is, in 1979 NWC = $1400 and in 1980 NWC =$1196. Therefore, the cash flow related to working capital is an inflow of $204. That is working capital decreased, thereby creating an inflow of cash in 1980. II. Justify the cost of capital used to discount the FCF. III. Estimate the present value of the cost savings that result from the lamination process applied to the graphite electrodes. This is discussed at the bottom of page 3 of the case and the...

...Life-Cycle Investing in Theory and Practice Zvi Bodie Life-cycle investing, especially investing for retirement, is today a matter of intense concern to millions, perhaps billions, of people around the world. In the past three decades, many respected finance theorists and behavioral scientists have studied how people should and actually do make investment decisions. Theorists have produced optimization models that capture important features of reality, such as changing investment opportunities, unpredictable labor income, habit formation, and transaction costs. And at the same time, scientific studies of actual financial behavior have revealed that people consistently make certain mistakes because of lack of knowledge, faulty logic, cognitive dissonance, and biased statistics. The new science of finance has had a profound impact on the practice of institutional risk management.1 Sophisticated enterprisewide risk-management systems are widely used today by financial service firms and a growing number of nonfinancial companies (DeLoach 2000). In comparison, applications of this new science to the important life-cycle issues households face have been limited. Online financial planning “ tools” “ and optimizers” far behind the best lag theory. Contemporary theory uses multiperiod hedging techniques and contingent-claims analysis, but the quantitative models routinely used by professional financial planners appear to be ad hoc blends of trial-and-error Monte Carlo forecasting and Markowitz’static...

...Many statutes are passed by parliament each year. The meaning of the law in these statutes should be clear and explicit but this is not always achieved. This is because laws must be drafted in general terms and must deal with both present and future situations. Often, a law which was drafted with one particular situation in mind will eventually be applied to quite different situations. Legislation is drawn up by draftsmen, and a draftsman’s capacity to anticipate the future is limited. He may not foresee some future possibility, or overlook a possible misinterpretation of the original intentions of the legislation. Another problem is legislation often tries to deal with problems that involve different and conflicting interests. Both legal and general English contain many words with more than one meaning. In fact, some of the broad terms are used which have seven or more distinct definitions. With this being the case, even the best drafted legislation can include many ambiguities. This is the fact where people look at a text from different points of view they will naturally find different meanings in the language used. The courts are helped by a number of tried and tested rules of statutory interpretation. Judges have their own preferences as to these rules and are free to choose which approach to adopt depending upon the circumstances. The first option open to the judge is literal rule which involves applying the 'plain, ordinary, literal meaning’ of words even if this would...

...I saw the movie, “The Man in the Iron Mask” but I didn’t like that it much. I think if you have some time and you want to waste it then watch this movie. There are various slight references to the political situation here, from the notion of the divine rule of Kings and the arrogance that stems from maintaining such a notion to distinctions of class, but unfortunately none of it is explored. The main reason the Musketeers rebel against the King is because Athos' son Raoul dies after being sent to the front to fight at Louis' orders. Aramis concocts a plan to de-throne King Louis, by replacing him with a doppelganger. This involves rescuing the prisoner in the iron mask, Louis' Twin Philippe, who was imprisoned so he could not be a threat to Louis' power. This sets up a conflict between D'Artagnan and the three Musketeers, the Queen Mother, and Louis himself as he finds his loyalties divided. This is the most interesting aspect of the movie, but it comes too late. DiCaprio presents a mixed performances in his "double acting" roles as Louis and Philippe. While the change of character is convincing (especially when Philippe's mask is removed), I think it could've been done better. The problem with DiCaprio, more than the acting, is in the delivery of the dialogue, the same problem which plagued him in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet. The show is stolen by the actors playing the Musketeer characters, Irons, Depardieu, Malkovich, and Byrne. The mixing of accents (American, British...

...[pic] [pic] [pic] [pic] How to Draft a Contract for a Catering Business by Michelle Hogan, Demand Media For most people, hiring a caterer is not a common event and only occurs during a major life change or event -- such as a wedding or graduation party. When drafting your contract for your catering business, make sure you understand that most people are unfamiliar with the process caterers develop to make events successful; therefore, ensure that each aspect of the event is clearly and concisely presented to your client within a formal contract. Ads by Google Free Purchase Agreement Purchase Agreement. All States. Print, Save, Download. 100% Free! businesspurchase.rocketlawyer.com Step 1 Write a list of all of the items you want to cover in your contract. This can include the customer's name and address; the type of function; the location of the function; how many guests are expected; whether you or the client will be responsible for dining service, dinnerware, tables and chairs and other items, as well as the suggested menu for the event. Step 2 Include clear language about the amount of the deposit and date reservation. The client must understand that by reserving a certain date, you are now unable to book that date for anyone else should they cancel. The date reservation deposit is usually 50 percent of the total bill. State when final payment is due. Many catering businesses expect payment in full a few days ahead of the scheduled event if...
