Merrimack Tractors and Mowers

...Introduction: Merrimack Tractors and Mowers was setup in 1980 and is based out of Nashua, New Hampshire. It is a major manufacturer and seller of large commercial grass mowers. The other major players in this product category were John Deere, The Toro Company, Simplicity and Husqvarna. The company had outsourced its manufacturing to a contractor in China and was primarily dealing in machines and parts design and distribution. Hence, Merrimack can be termed as a Merchandiser rather than a Manufacturer. Merrimack had no presence outside the USA market. Even with high transportation cost of importing finished goods, Merrimack was cost competitive, due to low cost manufacturing in China. However, by 2007-2008 this cost competitiveness had eroded due to increased labour costs in China, the strengthening of the Chinese currency and increases oil price leading to higher transportation cost. In contrast, the competitors with manufacturing facilities in USA were not affected much by these factors and in fact benefited from the weakening of the dollar in their export markets. Merrimack was listed on NASDAQ with 4000 shareholders and 25% shares owned by the Martino family. It was headed and run by Ricardo Martino of the Martino family. Problem Description: Merrimack had lost its cost competitiveness due to increased production costs in Asia, its manufacturing hub, which had led to decreasing trends in sales margin. Consequently, the shareholders were asking for the removal of Mr. Martino...

...sell. We want to produce exactly the same number of DVDs as what we can sell. Under this philosophy, since we can calculate the numbers of DVDs that expected to be sold is 3500. The number of DVDs that we need to produce is also 3500, which we believe can maximize our expected monetary value. Suppose Ann Queen decided to produce 3500 DVDs. We can calculate the EMV to be: 0.5*[2000*(14-3)-3500*3]+0.25[3500*(14-6)]+0.25*[3500*(14-6)]-15000=$4750 If for some reason Ann Queen can get exclusive information about how many DVDs she can sell exactly on Saturday and Sunday, I will suggest her to produce exact number of DVDs that can be sold without any over production. In this case, we have four scenarios to calculate profits: First scenario: Saturday 1000 and Sunday 1000 Total profit: 2000x8-15000=$1000 Under this scenario, the information is worth (3500-2000)x3=$4500 Explain: Since we do not have to over produce by 1500 DVDs, we can save production cost for $3/each. Second scenario: Saturday 1000 and Sunday 3000 Total profit: 4000x8-15000=$17000 Under this scenario, the information is worth 17000-4750=$12250 Explain: profit difference between with and without information...
