...Race Relations The three articles Bartoleme de Las Casas: Brief Account of the Devastation of the Indies (1542), Andrew Jackson's Speech to Congress on Indian Removal (1830), and Helen Hunt Jackson, A Century of Dishonor (New York, 1881) all speak about the slavery and mistreatment of the Indians. They give suggestions on ways to fix the problem of the mistreatment of Indians and give testimony on the mistreatment. In Bartolome de Las Casas: Brief Account of the Devastation of the Indies (1542), he talked about how Indians were enslaved and killed. The lands of Hispaniola which were extremely populated became less populated as more Spaniards arrived and began to kill and enslave Indians. The author stated “Yet into this sheepfold, into this land of meek outcasts there came some Spaniards who immediately behaved like ravening wild beasts, wolves, tigers, or lions that had been starved for many days.” Also, Indians from Puerto Rica and Jamaica were being brought from their land to Hispaniola to be sold as slaves some were killed. In Andrew Jackson's Speech to Congress on Indian Removal (1830), he talked about removing the Indians from their current homes to a new home to avoid them being killed. He describes that they (the government) will pay to relocate the Indians. Jackson says that since two Indian tribes have already accepted the offer and that because of that he hopes more will accept it. Jackson writes that “It will separate the Indians from immediate contact with...

...1450 CE -1650 CE 1542 In 1542, Cabrillo led the first European expedition to explore what is now the west coast of the United States. The Gulf of California had recently been explored by Francisco de Ulloa, Hernando de Alarcón and Domingo del Castillo, proving that California was not an island. Cabrillo was commissioned by Pedro de Alvarado, Governor of Guatemala, for a voyage up the California coast under the flag of Spain. Cabrillo hoped to find the fabulously wealthy cities known as Cibola, believed to be somewhere on the Pacific coast beyond New Spain, and a route connecting the North Pacific to the North Atlantic -- the non-existent "Straits of Anian". The Cabrillo expedition sailed out of the port of Navidad, near modern day Manzanillo, on June 24, 1542. Accompanying Cabrillo were a crew of sailors, soldiers,...

...| Hero Does Not Fit | Does James Wolfe Deserve the Title ‘Hero of Quebec’ | | Zachary Bliss | 12/6/2012 | Dr. Daryl White HI2600 | The battle of the Plains of Abraham was a turning point in the Seven Years War once the British defeated the French at Quebec they never relinquished hold of the city. It did not signal the end to the fighting but it gave the British the upper hand. The French army commanded by Louis-Joseph, Marquis de Montcalm was much larger than the British force commanded by Major-General James Wolfe. Montcalm had the help of François-Pierre de Rigaud de Vaudreuil, the governor of Trois-Riviere and when Great Britain declared war on France he commanded the advanced guard of Montcalm’s forces. While Wolfe is heralded as a hero in Britain he does not deserve the title ‘Hero of Quebec’. There is no doubt that James Wolfe was a tremendous leader. He certainly has the history to prove it. He was not however, the best tactician. He had joined the army at the age of fifteen and he was a Lieutenant Colonel and commanding his own regiment by the age of twenty-three. Francis Parkman describes Wolfe as “ardent, headlong, void of fear, often rash, almost fanatical in military duty, and reckless of life when the glory of England of his own was at stake”. He contains the qualities necessary to lead an army and did so quite effectively. His army stood triumphant at the end of the fighting but the British did not really win the battle; the French lost it....

Villalobos gave the Philippines their name, after calling them Las Islas Filipinas in honor of the Infante of Asturias at the time, Philip II of Spain. ...Xerox Corporation 1 Accounting Ethical Breaches at Xerox Corporation Taiwan Byrd Xerox Corporation 2 Accounting Ethical Breaches at Xerox Corporation Some of the largest accounting frauds in history occurred in the last several years leading to the well-known scandals in the accounting industry. During the early 2000’s accounting scandals were at the forefront of most business circles and rising to an all-time high in record number of cases being reported (Erickson). This raised the public to question and ask one major question are these scandals of fraud directly linked to the lack of ethics in these company or are they just honest mistakes that need to be fixed. Today businesses have made tremendous strides towards cleaning up the scandals. Businesses today have implemented programs that give the public, stockholders, and investors the belief that they want to take the right steps towards improving this negative environment inside major corporations around the world. The company I have chosen to take a more in-depth look at its ethical breaches and the improvements they have made to improve on those breaches is the famous and most illustrious Xerox Corporation. Xerox was cited for what we would call a major infraction back in the early 2000’s for some of their accounting practices in the late 1990’s.
