Theodore Roosevelt 1881-1889 War-hero, scholar, and conservative these are words that describe are 26th president, Theodore Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt once was in the New York legislature and lived in North Dakota before he became president. Although Theodore Roosevelt’s time as president may seem as the most superior because he had power, the time of 1881-1889 is more important, because this was the start of his political career, the death of his wife and mother, and his escape to North Dakota all took place in this time. To start off, in 1881 Theodore Roosevelt started his political career and he definitely did not go unnoticed. For instance, “At the age of twenty-three, Roosevelt, the youngest member of New York’s legislature, attracted attention because of his anti corruption stance and his flair for the dramatic. He instinctively knew how to make his doings interesting to the press and the public. For instance, “Shortly after Theodore Roosevelt retired from the presidency he visited North Dakota on a public engagement tour. At a groundbreaking ceremony he was introduced as a man deeply affected by the Dakota Badlands. ‘Had he not lived on the cattle ranch,’ the president of Fargo College said, ‘there would have been no Rough Rider regiment”(Cullinane 124). As you can see in this quote the time Roosevelt lived in North Dakota as a cattle rancher is the reason why we later had the Rough Rider regiment in the Spanish-American war. In 1988, the rough rider regiment was the most famous of all the units fighting in the Spanish-American and with Roosevelt leading them they won the battle of San Juan.
