19 Year Old Straight Essay

A 19 year-old straight “A” valedictorian with a full ride scholarship to a four year college who was taught since birth that she should never get anywhere near alcohol drops out of said college after only one years worth of attendance. Why did this happen? Because to the law an 18 year-old is an adult, but is not seen responsible enough to drink. She was never exposed to alcohol and because of that went absolutely crazy in college because of the taboo allure paired with peer pressure from other students that may not know the effects of alcohol. Alcohol should be entrusted to all adults, and as the law sees the age 18 as “adult” then that should be the cut off mark. This would have brought attention to the colleges that drinking may happen on …show more content…
Are people that are enlisted in the US military any different than other high school graduates? If they are aloud to drink why can’t non militaristic people? Louisiana briefly lowered its age limit in back to 18 in 1996, after the state Supreme Court ruled that the 21 years old limit was a form of age discrimination. Although this only lasted a few weeks before being reversed because of continuity issues. It showed that a few states in America are taking the drinking age issue under serious revision. How crazy can the idea of lowering the drinking age be if a state already lowered it, even if it was for only a brief period of time? Another place that has lowered the drinking age to 18 (although not in the United States) is Europe. Europe has many less drinking and driving incidents and a lot less incidents under the influence in general. In Europe the age to consume hard liquor is 18 and they have many less alcohol related incidents if most of Europe survives with their 18 year olds drinking alcohol then why is America is still in the prohibition

Gay Marriage

...Robert Tiers Professor Redman-Waldeyer December 1, 2011 Gay Marriage When two people, any two people, are in love, they should be able to openly express their love for each other by becoming married. However, not everyone is legally able to get married. A love shared by two people of the same sex cannot be binding because of petty laws that prohibit gay and lesbian couples to get married. It is ridiculous that two people in love cannot get married and commit to a lifetime together if they are of the same sex. Love is love. Love knows no boundaries, no limi Many people in today’s society believe gay and lesbian marriage is wrong, and if you are one of them, I am here to convince you otherwise. Gay marriage ensures homosexual couples the symbolic, financial, and medical benefits that heterosexual couples enjoy. The institution of Marriage ensures all its partakers, security. Same sex marriage affords homosexual couples the same security, be it financial, medical, or emotional, as heterosexual couples. Many are in favor of equal rights for homosexuals. Just name the situation, and ask. They'll all say yes, gays should have the same rights in housing, jobs, public accommodations, and should have equal access to government benefits, and equal protection of the law. Nearly 70% of people in the U.S. oppose gay marriage, almost the same proportion as are otherwise supportive of gay rights. This means that many of the same people who are passionately in favor of gay rights...

Compare and Contrast

...Both of these men established a career in the game that they both loved so much. Both players had accomplishments that will always remain a part of our history in the sport of baseball. Although both are known as baseball legends, they also offer their differences. Their differences and similarities varied amongst not only their careers but also their personal lives. Throughout this essay, I will explore their beginnings, initial inspirations, careers, and what makes them the legends that they are known as today. Jackie Robinson was born Jack Roosevelt Jackson on January 31, 1919, in Cairo, Georgia. He attended John Muir High School and Pasadena Junior College where he was an excellent athlete and played four sports. It was Jackie’s older brother who inspired him to pursue his talent and passion for athletics. Unlike Robinson, Babe Ruth was from a different part of the nation. He was born George Herman Ruth Jr. on February 6, 1895 in Baltimore, Maryland (Biography.com). When Babe was seven years old, his parents sent him to St. Mary’s Industrial school for boys where he lived until he was 19 years old. While he was at St. Mary’s he developed into a good baseball player. He was a natural as soon as he stepped onto the baseball field with the help of his brother Matthias who helped him master skills. Just as Robinson, Ruth was also inspired to play by his brother. However, Robinson played four sports while Ruth only played one. Nevertheless, these strong backgrounds in baseball led...

Personal Narrative: Dr. George As A Role Model

...When I sat down to write this essay, I had no idea who to pick. My first thought was mother teresa, since she was just canonized as a saint recently, and for all her work with the poor and people who needed her help. After thinking for longer, I realized that I should pick someone that I know and who has influenced me personally. My mind went straight to Father (Fr.) George, a priest at my parish. He was my first choice because he is caring, selfless, and kind as well as courageous, brave, and determined. He is a role model to me, and I am always looking for ways to be like him. One sunday, my family and I were at church, and Fr. George was saying mass. All of a sudden, we hear a BOOM! and people saying, “Oh my God, is she OK?” Turns out, my friend AJ’s grandma passed out. My mom called 911, and the Paramedics came. As they were putting her on a stretcher, I see Fr. George go over to her and give her a blessing and communion. I later found out that Fr. George went to visit her in the hospital, and that she was ok. In this moment, Fr, George was being caring and kind to AJ’s grandma, and went out of his way to do something he didn’t have to do. I try to emulate Fr. George and be compassionate towards others. In 4th grade, there was a kid named Kevin who had a muscle disorder and...

Bullying

...Stella Anderson Persuasive Essay Speech Class 11/19/2014 Bullying: Real Harm Deserves Real Consequences During the school year, children go off to school to get an education. Unfortunately for some, getting a good education can feel almost impossible. Imagine a child not wanting to go to school because they are afraid to. Imagine the child’s grades dropping because they cannot concentrate. Most would agree that they would want to do everything they can for their children to be comfortable going to school and feeling safe. The ongoing and growing problem that is causing such disturbance is bullying. Bullying is a social interaction where a more dominant individual, who is the bully, exhibits aggressive behavior that is intended to, and does, in fact, cause distress to a less dominant individual which is the victim. The aggressive behavior can be direct physical contact and/or a verbal attack that can be direct or indirect (Bullying). Bullying includes harassment, intimidation to varying degrees, taunting and ridicule (Ferrell-Smith). About 50% of high school students said they have bullied someone in the past year. Forty seven percent said they had been bullied, teased or taunted in a way that seriously upset them in the past year. Nearly 40% of bullied girls and 46% of bullied boys in grades 3 through 12 have been bullied a year or longer, yet fewer than 50% of bullied students have told a parent (Billitteri). Many students that are being bullied are suffering silently...

Should Same Sex Be Legalized

...Should Same-Sex Marriage be Legalized? Introduction to Ethics & Social Responsibility SOC 120 Should Same-Sex Marriage be Legalized? For many years, the debate of should same-sex marriage be legalized has been a topic unsettled. I believe that same-sex marriage should be legalized because not allowing same-sex marriage is discrimination against minorities, protected by the constitution, and is not a sin according to Bible verses. Those against the idea argue homosexuality is a sin, marriage should be between a man and a woman, and same-sex marriage will weaken the institution of marriage. So which side is correct? And what side are you on? This essay will provide you with the facts about same-sex marriage so that you will be able to answer these questions and form an educated opinion on the topic. When arguing if homosexuality is wrong or right, religious arguments often quote scriptures. The problem with this is that the scriptures being quote have more to the meaning than homosexuality. For example, in Genesis 2:18-25 (NIV), when God created Adam and Eve, one of the biggest sayings is that “God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.” The first problem with using this saying is that it is true God created male and female, as this is the way you reproduce. The verse is not indicating that God created Adam and Eve as husband and wife. Another argument from this verse is that “God created our body’s to be used in a certain way, and we should not use them in any...

...also Rises (after publishing Torrents of Spring, a comic novel parodying Sherwood Anderson in 1925). He followed that book with Men without Women in 1927; it was another book of stories which collected "The Killers" and "In Another Country." In 1929 he published A Farewell to arms , arguably the finest novel to emerge from World War I. Let us consider the following essays for today’s discussion on the topic of Hemingway’s artistry skills. • Sudden Unexpected Interjection by David Gagne 1 • An Essay on In Our Time by Nathan Kotas 2 • Preludes to a Mood in The New York Times October 18, 1925 3 • Love and War in the pages of Ernest Hemingway by Percy Hutchinson 4 Ernest Hemingway had the most unique and colourful style of writing . He used symbolism. His style of writing involved getting right to the core of the scene without spending much time on building of characters. He used simple and declarative language. But this unique style of writing, made many feel that Hemingway was an artist in his essence. Lets find what these four people have to say on this particular aspect of Ernest Hemingway. The first two essays deal with mainly the narrative style of Hemingway. As such, they would justify that Hemingway was truly an artist because of his narrative style. The latter two place Hemingway in a super soul level. His writings are considered more divine and bestowed with a power to evoke higher levels of feelings and that would be because of his real life experiences....

Should There Be Specific Anti Gay Bullying Policies in Schools

...Should There Be Specific Anti-Gay Bully Polices in Schools First let’s be clear about definitions concerning this essay. Bully: One who is habitually cruel to smaller or weaker people (The American Heritage Dictionary 2007). An aggressive person who intimidates or mistreats weaker people, (Encarta dictionary, 2012). Bullying: The process of intimidating or mistreating somebody weaker or in a more vulnerable situation (Encarta dictionary, 2012). Bullying for this paper: Any act of harassment, intimidation, whether physical, verbal or telecommunicated (cyber/text) that makes a person feel demeaned, belittled, fearful, or endangered. Since doing this research I find that each article defines bullying in a different way. I believe that we need to have a definitive explanation of what we consider bullying on the whole. Although every definition centers on the idea that someone is being mistreated in some way by another person. Why is it surprising that we have children lashing out to the children that have bullied them today when this is what Americans have done since this country began? The Europeans came to this country and started to take over the land. The Native Americans very rarely killed one another, they simply counted coup. As the Europeans continued to move away from the east coast they decided that the way the Native Americans were living was barbaric and they needed to be civilized and Christianized. When the Native Americans refused to conform, the...
