A person can indentify bacteria called Salmonella and is a cause of infectious food poisons. The bacteria affect the person’s intestinal tract, gastrointestinal and lymphatic. Salmonella is the second most infectious deadly diseases in the United States. People with weak immune systems can contract this bacteria at any age even a pregnant women. There are over 2,500 different types of Salmonella. Salmonella bacteria are found in chicken, eggs, meats and dairy products. Some of the bacteria can also be found in fruit and vegetables. The bacteria are transmitted in the food through animal feces during the butchering process. Water can be contaminated if not properly sanitized. If the food is improperly cooked and washed with contaminated water it can cause infections. Anyone can pass on the bacteria, if food areas are not properly clean. A food with Salmonella usually looks and smells normal. The symptoms of Salmonella include: nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, fever, chills, headache, muscle pains, and blood in the stool. Within eight to 72 hours a person can develop these symptoms and last as long as four to seven days. The person needs to seek medical attention, if not he or she can die. The way this infection is treated one is by using antibiotics directed by a physician only, but antibiotics should not be the first choice. Second a person should eat toast, plain yogurts, and food that have Lactobacillus acidophilus to control the nausea and vomiting. Third stays hydrated and drink lots of clear fluids such as water, PowerAde drinks and clear juices to help the diarrhea. For fever a person can take Ibuprofen or any pain medication. This condition will normally resolve on its own. The most recent outbreak in the United States was the ground turkey product. The reason for the recall was that one person died from the disease in California and there were about 77 other who got sick. After a two week investigation the Federal health officials said they knew all the evidence had pointed toward the Cargill plant in Springdale, Arkansas. Cargill Meat Solution voluntary recalled about 36 million pounds of ground turkey because it might have been contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. Here are some steps to prevent further outbreaks from Salmonella. One way is not to eat foods that are left out more than four days or raw meat. All food handlers should wash their hands with soap and water after using the bathroom. Everyone should wash their hands after using the bathroom and keep all counter top clean. Always wash hands after touching animals can carry the bacteria such as lizards and pets that have diarrhea before handling food. Wash all surfaces often, clean utensils and cutting boards with hot soapy water. If anyone experience any type of symptoms mentioned that person should seek medical attention. Cook all foods thoroughly and refrigerate foods properly. If it does not taste or smell good do not eat the food, most likely it may contain the virus. Consider cleaning kitchen surfaces with paper towels. The public health department needs to educate food industry workers, restaurant owners, and anyone working for a restaurant. Other people such as farmers should also be educated on how to handle food packaging and safely caring for the animals.
