1LT George Kent Sisler was born on 19 September 1937 in Dexter, Missouri. There is not much information pertaining to 1LT Sisler’s early life prior to attending Arkansas State College, now Arkansas State University. According to documents published on Arkansas State University’s website, 1LT Sisler was a student of Arkansas State College from 1961 to 1964. He graduated from Arkansas State College with a Bachelorette Degree of Science in Education. While in college, 1LT Sisler began to display perseverance when he won the National Collegiate Skydiving Championship in 1963 all while wearing a leg cast which he injured previously. After graduating from ASU’s ROTC program, he commissioned as a Military Intelligence Officer.
After commissioning, 1LT Sisler served as the Assistant Military Intelligence Officer in Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 5th Special Forces Group, 1st Special Forces. In 1967, 1LT Sisler was assigned to MACV Studies and…show more content… Army news archives, while serving as the platoon leader, on 7 February 1967, 1LT Sisler was on a mission within enemy (Vietnamese) territory when his platoon was attacked from three sides by a company-size element. 1LT Sisler quickly took action and began to rally his men, set up a defensive posture and called in an air strike, all while interacting with his men to keep them focused so they would not become discouraged. 1LT Sisler later realized that two of his men were wounded, putting himself in harm’s way, he ran out into intense fire and carried one of the wounded back into the platoon’s perimeter. After intense fire, 1LT Sisler’s platoon came under extremely heavy weapons fire. 1LT Sisler then did the unthinkable, he charged out toward the enemy with his weapon and grenades. Shooting and throwing grenades, 1LT Sisler was able to break up the assault, forcing the enemy to retreat.
