The depression last over ten years and had long-term social, economic, and political effects on American society. It is still one of the greatest defining eras in US History. In general, we know what caused the Great Depression, but these causes are still debated even today. It happened after a period of great prosperity (The 1920s) when American commerce was growing. ...I didn't really take notes, but now that I am planning on taking the SAT Subject Test for US History, I found the need to go through the book and take notes to better retain the information. Side note: The Subject Test questions (all multiple choice) are usually not accompanied by a relevant text or picture, but does test the same knowledge the AP Exam does. I am using a system that I really like and it begins by reading the chapter summary at the end, and writing down the main points in bullet form. Then I would read the individual section summaries behind the chapter summary, write down main points in bullet form, and flip to the corresponding section in the chapter to write down any bolded terms. For example, I would go through the chapter summary of 5, the 5.1 section summary, the 5.1 section of the chapter, 5.2 section summary, 5.2 section in chapter, and finally read the chapter, adding in important info as I find...
