Students in the 21st Century

I chose to observe children for a three-hour block at my three daughter’s dance studio. These children were a variety of different ages, from three to ten. The format was both structured (during the classes) and unstructured ( in between). Girls are very giggly. Their communication style was very dramatic. During their unstructured time, girls of all ages were running around, giggling, happy and being overly expressive. All the girls smiled and were generally happy. Some of the girls communicated with more body language than the others. This was evident by them using their hands while talking or by touching each other while speaking. I witnessed many girls grab hands, arms, or hug in a loving manner to display affection as they were speaking or as part of a greeting. The girls talked about upcoming events like Christmas, gifts that they wanted and excitement over the upcoming Christmas dance recital. The older girls talked about school, upcoming tests, and the fast approaching Christmas break. There was some discussion of boys, but very little. Phrases I heard over and over were “Oh My God” and “ That’s adorbs” . As a mother of three girls, these are phrases I am very familiar with. The attitudes displayed were generally very happy. The girls were all bubbly, happy to see and greet one another. All of the girls seemed to want to be there and excited to go into their dance classes. Because we were at a dance studio all the girls were in dance uniforms, so there was very little differentiation in how they looked. Each girl had on pink tights, a black leotard and had their hair in a bun. There was some variation as some girls had skirts or sweaters on. When the girls went into their respective dance studios to begin classes, the behavior did change. They adhered to the rules set up by the studio and the individual dance teachers. The chatter stopped and they became more serious. It was evident which girls were truly committed to dance and which were going through the motions. However they all seemed to enjoy what they were doing and wanted to be there. As soon as the classes were completed and the girls either got their jackets to go home or transitioned into another studio for more classes, the chatter started again, along with the giggles, laughter and exuberance. As a mother of three daughters none of the behavior I witnessed surprised me. Girls, especially tween and teen girls tend to be dramatic and overly excitable. This was a very controlled environment as all the children wanted to be there and in turn did not display any disruptive behavior. It was evident however in the classes as well as in the free time who the ‘ring leaders’ were. These were the girls who danced the best in class and had the other girls hanging off them outside of class. The question that came to my mind the most was “Do these girls hang out with one another at school as well?” Most of these girls attend school together as well and it would be interesting to see of they choose to be around each other outside of dance too.

I volunteered as a timer, which allowed me an up close and personal view of the kids I was observing. There were three separate swim teams participating in the meet, which totaled around 60-80 swimmers. There was 4 distinct age groups that competed: 8 years old and under, 9 & 10 year olds, 11 & 12 year olds, and 13 & 14 year olds. My nephew competed in the 9 & 10 group, and my niece swam in the 11 & 12 group, so naturally I focused more on those swimmers. They frequently complained about the events they were signed up to swim, and felt unsure about how they would do in the events. Their postures were often hunched over or bunched up, and their tone was often muted.
