The delivery of mental health nursing has considerably changed over the last twenty years, in 1988 the world’s first survey was conducted which focused on how common mental health problems were among 12 to 25year old’s. The survey estimated that approximately 15% of young people had suffered from a mental illness and of that only a quarter had presented to a mental health service. The circumstances of young people can make them more susceptible to poorer health outcomes, factors can be influenced by social and cultural. Moving forward to now, there’s been substantial changes in people’s understanding of mental illnesses and how care should be delivered. Orygen Youth Health undertook a study in 2013 to examine the impact of co-occurring substance use disorders (SUD) among two groups, this was observed from baseline presentation to 6months later. The study consistently reports that both groups had suicidal thoughts, serious impairments in functioning, and high levels of psychopathology. Following the 6months the non-SUD group had considerable improvements in all areas, whilst the SUD group experienced ongoing issues with functioning and poorer health outcomes. The findings from the survey indicate the importance of early recognition and management to better equip youth mental health and substance use services. ‘New Understanding, New Hope’ is the theme of the report, it demonstrates how knowledge and awareness are breaking down real and perceived barriers of care in mental health. Social, environmental, and biological factors influence most mental and physical illnesses. The report intends to dismantle the barriers predominantly of discrimination, stigma, and inadequate services, as these prevent millions of people worldwide from receiving the treatment they need. The management of mental illness within a primary care is to enable people to get easier and faster access to services. For this to happen health personnel need to be trained in the essential skills of mental health care, the training ensures the best care to young people seeking help. Community care has seen an improvement in the outcome and quality of life for young people with chronic mental illnesses, it proves more effective then inpatient facilities. Educating the public will shift the negative impact of those with a mental illness thus reducing the stigma associated with seeking help. (Rickwood et al., 2015) states that Headspace has seen positive outcomes for young people who attend their facilities.
