28.04 Referral and Evaluation What happens when a disability is suspected in the classroom?

A student who is suspected of having a disability may have a parent, teacher, or other concerned caregiver, suggest to a school district that the child be evaluated. When a child is referred for an evaluation, the school district must respond to the parents or caregiver within five school days of the referral. School districts should provide families the opportunity to consult with the Administer of Special Education.

Once a referral is cleared, the evaluation process can begin. With consent from a child’s parents, a school should provide an evaluation within 30 days. The assessment should be adapted accordingly to the child’s age and
