...Record Review 2Pac – Changes Due to his ‘street cred’, Tupac had the ability to reach out to a large audience; dominantly black people, creating a positive impact on their lives and their communities. His track ‘Changes’ is a prime example of how he strived to send a positive message to his listeners, despite his ‘thug life’ image. Within his lyrics he comments on the main issues in the black community, expressing his opinion on police, drugs and gangs. During this 4minutes and 30 seconds he attempts to grasp his audience by using his poetic ability to portray his life in such a way that his listeners are able to relate to his story and almost feel his emotions. The main issue which he speaks about is racism. "Cops give a damn about a negro? My first exposure to hip-hop other than the cassettes of Latin American, and Caribbean style music that my parents played at home such as, salsa, merengue, Son Cubano, and bachata , was a two disc album by 2Pac Shakur, All Eyez on Me. I had never heard of this genre of music until I stumbled upon this album, and being brought up in a Christian family, I was very sheltered to the world outside Christianity. As I looked at the album cover, I saw an African American man making a gesture with his right hand that represented a W. In a showcasing manner he held in his left hand a gold piece that was dangling from his chain. Sitting backwards in a chair, his head was slightly tilted as he poised himself over the back of the chair. I was very intrigued by the gestures and his posture. It quickly made my mind race with ideas and confusion as to what the meaning of his life was. Seeing nothing like this before, I immediately grabbed my cd player and popped in disk 1.
