The Problem: Galindo sees that there is a lack of Chicana and minority teachers in the United States school system. The author seeks to create new Chicana teachers by illustrating how current Chicana teachers embrace their ethnicity while being a teacher to empower and encourage them. They want to show that ethnicity and/or race does have a major role in teaching profession that needs to be taken more seriously in teacher programs in order to connect with their minority students beyond the student-teacher relationship. Overall, they want to teachers to use their ethnicity and/or race in the classroom to encourage minority students to become teachers and to try to integrate in teacher programs. The three teachers show how one specific and personal value that has been ingrained by their family can determine how they decide to approach their personal teaching styles in the classroom. They found two ideas that came up which were education for minority students and good relationships with their parents. The teachers list how they interact with their students and their parents in order to create welcoming, diverse, and motivating environment in the classroom. The author goes into great detail in how they bring their most important family value into the classroom, their relationship with their students and parents and how they interact with the community. They want to pass their values to their students so they realize that their heritage and background is something to be proud of.
