...The People You Meet In College THE 1 HIT WONDER You will never hear this guy/girl ever say anything, whether it be to other students or the professor. Then one day, after looking extremely intense or constipated for an hour straight, they will say something so gloriously insightful that it will bring tears to the eyes of everyone who bears witness to it. Then they will never speak again. THE KID THAT NO-ONE LIKES This kid is a jerk! And for arguments sake let’s call him “DANNY.” You desperately want to punch him in his ear, but he’s disabled. And because he disabled he makes sure to make EVERYONE mad. This kid will sometime attempt to befriend you then manage to say or do something so unspeakably rude or offer some sort of backwards compliment. Parties disassemble whenever this guy manages to find his way to one. Everyone avoids him but secretly watches him to see if he will lose a crutch while walking or roll down the stairs just to get in a good chuckle. THE SUBURBAN RAPPER The Suburban Rapper can be found in any common area, listening to his own music on his IPOD at an unreasonable volume. Generally (but not always) white, he awkwardly uses the words Dog, Crib, Homie, Phat, G, or Ill. If he spots you, he’ll ask you to “peep this new track yo,” or attempt to sell you tickets to his concert. His music is generally unbearable, and if you’re lucky, you can get away with only hearing a few verses. He always seems surprised that his poser antics never land him a girl...

...such ease. It has been a medium where social frameworks and modernity has been successfully transmitted to its audience thus far, standing testament to Bollywood’s popularity. Sprinkling magic dust and constructing fantasy through spectacle, Bollywood has managed to merge the reality with fiction for the audiences’ gaze. Moreover, this sensory experience of ‘watching’ Bollywood movies has managed to dissolve and reconstruct the boundaries of the cinema as a public place of consumption. In so doing, the cinema-going element has defined Bollywood and how audiences experience it – association of cinematic practices and cinematic image. This paper aims to textualize this experience, as observed and understood by myself, in the cosmopolitan setting of Singapore. Apart from the unique ethnography, I was intrigued to observe first-hand, the reaction of an audience familiarised with Bollywood as a spectacle genre of movies, when they encounter an avant-garde film – Finding Fanny, “a Wes-Anderson-esque Hindi Film”. Was it ‘paisa vasool’? Ethnography & Location The ethnography of Singapore is...

...Neeraj’s USMLE Step-2 CS Notes The Perfect “Encounter”: A Strategic Approach to Communication & Interpersonal skills The encounter in a USMLE CS examination is between a non-physician medical educator (SP: Standardized Patient) and an examinee, who may be a medical student or a physician. SPs are defined as "a simulated or real patient who has been taught to present a problem so accurately that the simulation cannot be detected by a skilled clinician.” (1) These SPs will seem like real patients to you and should be treated as such during the USMLE examination. With this in mind, it is important to remember that good communication and interpersonal skills are a top concern for every patient. If you have a pleasing personality, patiently hear all of their dilemmas and concerns, and have good communication skills, it will surely create and maintain long lasting and conducive relationships with your patients. Before we talk about strategies to delineate an ideal and perfect encounter with a SP, we should know a few facts about the examination. First, what is the purpose of the examination? It is very interesting that this examination is structured to test your clinical skill proficiency and not the diagnosis that you arrive at. Three components of the report score: One must pass all three components in a single test administration. These three components are as follows: ICE (Integrated Clinical Encounter): assess data gathering and data sharing ability...

...HUMAN RESOURCES Conference Paper Abstracts A CHANGE RECIPIENT PERSPECTIVE ON TRAINING AND COMPETENCE DEVELOPMENT DURING ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE Olsen, Trude Hogvold; Harstad U. College; trude.olsen@hih.no Stensaker, Inger G.; NHH Norw.Schl of Economics and Business Adm.; inger.stensaker@nhh.no As organizations change and adapt to pressures in the external and internal environment, managers and employees are required to learn new competencies and skills. Ideally, new skill requirements should be identified and developed early in the change process in order to ensure that managers and employees are ready to face their new tasks and roles when the changes are implemented. However, despite good intentions at the top management level, employees and middle managers often report uncertainty and a lack of the necessary skills required to implement change. In this paper, we report from a qualitative study of two planned organizational change initiatives in the public sector. The changes involved new work tasks and managerial roles for a group of middle managers. Although the skill requirements appeared to be clear and formal training was initiated, a number of uncertain and ambiguous issues emerged among the change recipients. We examine the types of uncertainty and ambiguity that emerged and how change recipients attempted to handle these challenges. Our findings suggest that although necessary and important, formal training procedures are not adequate for resolving competence-related...

... Prologue The sun is about to set. That fuzzy and pitch-black place with a nostalgic hymn of the approaching dying twilight is already filled with his desire to wake up from his endless nightmare. Holding a golden ring on his right hand, he is calmly watching over the horizon as he tries to feel better, but he cannot for he is still caged within the memories of the wicked past and within the present catastrophe. He gradually leaned his back to that mango tree where their chained names are carved inside a heart. For the past 99 days, it has been his desperate habit to wait there for the coming of that person whom he knows will never arrive. Then liquids of emotions flowed out of his vision as his heart drowns with it. Nothing can comfort him since when that peak of joy bounced him out and turned him to be a man he is now. He was never insane yet he doesn’t already know of whom he is and even the people around him; he is just hopeless and unable to keep step of what happened for the past year. Grief and fear never left him and continued to slaved him and took control over his moral and physical character which paved him to be a ‘hard to decipher person’. However, he still lives for he has still an inch of dignity despite of great loneliness. Moreover, his heart is still shouting aloud saying, “I will never leave you..” Chapter I It’s Saturday. Lesther is very excited for he will be seeing his long-time girlfriend again to celebrate their 4th year anniversary. Of...

...1 Dividing a number by zero doesn't produce an infinitely large number as an answer. The reason is that division is defined as the inverse of multiplication; if you divide by zero, and then multiply by zero, you should regain the number you started with. However, multiplying infinity by zero produces only zero, not any other number. There is nothing which can be multiplied by zero to produce a nonzero result; therefore, the result of a division by zero is literally “undefined.” 1a Renee was looking out the window when Mrs. Rivas approached. “Leaving after only a week? Hardly a real stay at all. Lord knows I won't be leaving for a long time.” Renee forced a polite smile. “I'm sure it won't be long for you.” Mrs. Rivas was the manipulator in the ward; everyone knew that her attempts were merely gestures, but the aides wearily paid attention to her lest she succeed accidentally. “Ha. They wish I'd leave. You know what kind of liability they face if you die while you're on status?” “Yes, I know.” “That's all they're worried about, you can tell. Always their liability-” Renee tuned out and returned her attention to the window, watching a contrail extrude itself across the sky. “Mrs. Norwood?” a nurse called. “Your husband's here.” Renee gave Mrs. Rivas another polite smile and left. 1b Carl signed his name yet another time, and finally the nurses took away the forms for processing. He remembered when he had brought Renee in to be admitted, and thought of all the stock...

It visualizes the negation of female gender in art. The paper investigates the dichotomy of language, the use of irony and situational metaphors to displace conventional ones; it blends theories with critical evaluation of discourse. The research uses empirical methods in solving hypothetical questions with the use of extensive and relatively unstructured interviews. It examines the interviews of twenty five people independently, these people include: University lecturers, students, administrative and technical staff. The work analyzes concurrently their interview testimonies to search for congruence. Data analysis begins with a detailed microanalysis in which emergent concepts...

Prologue Flap The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi Prologue Prologue When did I stop believing in Santa Claus? In truth, this sort of silly question holds no real significance for me. However, if you were to ask me when I stopped believing that the old man wearing the red costume was Santa, then I can confidently say: I have never believed in Santa, ever. I knew that the Santa who appeared at my preschool Christmas party was a fraud, and now that I think about it, every one of my classmates shared the same look of disbelief watching our teacher pretend to be Santa. Although I had never seen mommy kissing Santa Claus, I was already wise enough to be suspicious about the existence of an old man who worked only on Christmas Eve. However, it took me quite a bit longer to realize that the aliens, time-travelers, ghosts, monsters and espers in those effects-filled 'good guys versus evil organization' cartoons didn't actually exist either. No, wait, I probably did realize, I just didn't want to admit it. Deep inside my heart I still wanted those aliens, time-travelers, ghosts, monsters, espers and evil organizations to suddenly appear. Compared to this boring, normal...

Preface This isn’t really a teacher’s manual, not, at least, in the sense of a catechism of questions and correct answers and interpretations. Because the questions provided after each selection in Rereading America are meant to stimulate dialogue and debate — to generate rather than terminate discourse — they rarely lend themselves to a single appropriate response. So, while we’ll try to clarify what we had in mind when framing a few of the knottier questions, we won’t be offering you a list of “right” answers. Instead, regard this manual as your personal support group. Since the publication of the first edition, we’ve had the chance to learn from the experiences of hundreds of instructors nationwide, and we’d like to use this manual as a forum where we can share some of their concerns, suggestions, experiments, and hints. We’ll begin with a roundtable on issues you’ll probably want to address before you meet your class. In the first section of this manual, we’ll discuss approaches to...
