Math plays a very large portion in the lives of every person on the planet. It is used from everyday basic tasks such as shopping for groceries or determining how much of an ingredient should be applied to a dish to determining how much fuel is needed for a spaceship to launch or the appropriate amount of each of the chemicals used to make life saving medications. Number systems, binary logic and random numbers are three reasons why I would need math for my major in network system administration. I would need math to understand number systems. All data that is passed through computer networks travel as binary numbers that are represented by strings of 1’s and 0’s. 1’s distinguish that an impulse is turned on while 0’s distinguish that is turned off. It relates to math because I would need to base 2, 10 and 16 to understand binary code. To understand binary logic I would also need math. A logic operation processes binary digits in a way similar to arithmetic but are expressed as AND, OR and NOT. It allows the internet and smaller networks to manage network addresses and allow communication between computers because they are aware of each other’s addresses. I will also use math for the random numbers associated with network system administrations. The Internet relies on a complex signalling system called TCP/IP which allows the passing of information between computers and ensures that data arrives at its destination complete and correct. Math comes in to play because part of the process requires generation of a random number between 1 and 4,294,967,295 which allows the number to identify a stream of data before it is sent and assists in preventing accidental mixing of data between streams. Random numbers, binary logic and number systems are used to assist network system administrators with daily work-related tasks. Those are just 3 reasons out of many of why math is so important to this career path among the countless other ways that is useful to every individual on the planet.
