Identifying Training Needs

The purpose of my training session was to give delegates a guidance of the skills and knowledge to understand Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) should it ever be required in an emergency situation. I felt that the simple knowledge of basic CPR is important for all to know for personal reasons. Training needs are identified in numerous ways. It maybe that an employee would be required to do a full first aid at work course within their working environment under Health & Safety legislation or just the companies preference to increase their provision. It maybe required under their occupation e.g. working with children that they are required to hold this qualification. The individual may simply have the desire or feel they lack the knowledge and skills should they ever be required. An individual may simply by deemed the best person to have first aid qualification because the come in to contact with many members of the public. As such one never knows when an emergency situation could arise and there might only you in the vicinity. Training Objectives My main aim for my course was to make this a realistic fun and interactive course but not to forget the seriousness of how important it is for everyone to know basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. By making the course fun and interactive I hoped this would make everyone be able to remember the training in an achievable way. Planning the Training * A warm welcome * Health & Safety and welfare issues * Icebreaker * Introductions * Venue layout * Course * Questions * Feedback Media / Resources required * PowerPoint * Handout of PowerPoint presentation * Little Annie – dummy * Music Running the Course The course started out with a welcome, all health and safety and welfare issue where covered. Introduction of all delegates was given with an icebreaker to relax everybody. A power-point presentation was used to aid the delegates with visual aid by following the instructions and procedures required to keep themselves and others around them safe and to give the knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation. A ‘First Aid little Annie’ dummy and music were also used. The room layout was set with delegates sat in a semi-circle around the Little Annie. Above Little Annie was the overhead projector to view the PowerPoint presentation. I felt that being able to see the demonstration and other delegates through out the course would be beneficial to all. If the delegates could not see the demonstration this would have impacted on the course and delegate not perform the procedure correctly. Delegates each in turn took the opportunity to practice the procedure of CPR on the dummy. The use of the music gave them an aid to use the procedure at the correct speed. Using music within the course helped the delegates to remember the number of breaths and the speed required during the process. The aim was to get the delegates involved practically in the training session. Use of ‘Little Annie’ gave delegates the opportunity to follow the procedure demonstrated and then the opportunity to practice themselves. By giving the delegates the use of the Little Annie to practice I was able to give feedback and to point out and correct when the CPR process was not being followed. After each delegate practiced on the dummy I provided cleaning cloths to clean the dummies airway prior to the next delegate proceeding therefore maintaining a healthy and safe course environment. The course was designed and performed in a way to cover all visual, audible and doing learning styles to keep all delegates interested in the course. Although the Little Annie was on the floor for delegates to kneel down at the side of the dummy – in future I should ask delegates to wear trousers therefore maintaining female modesty and maintain comfort for them. Delegates had the opportunity to ask any questions and were asked to course critique questionnaires before the close of the course. Feedback from delegates informs that the course was informative and fun and that some would look at first aid facilities within their place of work and also for themselves. The course completely met the aims set out and course content was about right for the subject. The pace of the course was about right for each delegate and they were satisfied with the equipment, media and literature used. I recognise that further information should be made available to delegates on where they can get further information of first aid courses. I would also make sure that the Little Annie was in full working order next time. After being let down from one Little Annie donor the day before the course, I would double and triple check the supply of future props prior to there required date.
