...The first season introduces two major groups of characters: the Baltimore police department and a drug dealing organization run by the Barksdale family. The season follows the investigation of the latter over its 13 episodes. An investigation into a large Baltimore based drug dealing is triggered when detective Jimmy McNulty meets privately with judge Daniel Phelan following the acquittal of D'Angelo Barksdale for murder after a key witness changes her story. McNulty tells Phelan that the witness has probably been intimidated by members of a drug trafficking empire run by D'Angelo's uncle, Avon Barksdale, having recognized several faces at the trial, notably Avon's second-in-command, Stringer Bell. He also tells Phelan that nobody is investigating Barksdale's criminal activity, which includes a significant portion of the city's drug trade and several unsolved homicides. Phelan takes issue with this and complains to senior Police Department figures, embarrassing them into creating a detail dedicated to investigating Barksdale. However, owing to the department's dysfunctionality, the investigation is intended as a façade to appease the judge. An interdepartmental struggle between the more motivated officers on the detail and their superiors spans the whole season, with interference by the higher-ups often threatening to ruin the investigation. The detail's commander, Cedric Daniels, acts as mediator between the two opposing groups of police. Meanwhile, the organized and cautious...

...theme of duty builds confidence in the story of Wee Free Men. Proving this I will use 3 examples and quotes from the text. The first example I will use is on page 11 when Tiffany has the duty of looking after Wentworth. I will also use an example on page 243 when Tiffany forcefully orders Roland to crack the nut as well as on page 253 when Tiffany orders the Wee Free Men to find refuge from the nightmares in the trees. Tiffany’s confidence increases when she becomes selfless, fulfilling her duty of looking after her family and friends. In chapter 1 when Tiffany looks after Wentworth she builds up her confidence. This example located on page 11 when Tiffany states “Wentworth would be sticky. It didn’t seem to come from anywhere. He just got sticky. But he was an easy child to mind, provided you stopped him eating frogs.” This example shows Tiffany has the selfless duty of looking after Wentworth and in doing so she is able to build up confidence in herself. In chapter 11 Tiffany shows that she builds her confidence when she forcefully orders Roland to crack the nut. A quote to prove this is on page 243 when Tiffany hastily whispers to Roland “Crack the nut! Don’t worry about what I do! Just crack the nut!” This is a prime example as it shows that Tiffany is building up confidence in herself and that she now has the confidence to order her friends around to do what is best for them. In chapter 11 when Tiffany orders the Wee Free Men to head for the trees she shows that she...

...A critical analysis of “Introducing and piloting the KiVa bullying prevention programme in the UK” by J. Hutchings and S. Clarkson 2015. Introduction The KiVa program was developed by Christina Salmivalli at the University of Turku in Finland, it was developed as a means to reduce and hopefully prevent bullying and victimization from happening in schools. KiVa is an abbreviation for “Kiusaamista Vastaan” which translates into “against bullying” which relates to the program’s intent to effect the bystanders of bullying as previous research showed that the actions of the bystanders effects the frequency of bullying (Salmivalli, Voeten & Poskiparta, 2011). Whereas other studies have shown that trying to change possible targets and individual bullies are not sufficient to stop bullying behavior (Salmivalli, Poskiparta, Ahtola & Haataja, 2013). The program includes lessons where students are asked/invited to partake in role-play, discussions and listening to stories told by previous bully victims and online games made to guide the students reflect over the matter. Another important aspect of the program is to improve students’ social skills (Hutchings & Clarkson, 2015), as this is an important aspect when making friends, which in return makes them more protected from bullying (Hanish, Ryan, Martin & Fabes, 2005). Being in a KiVa school is easily recognized, as there are posters displayed around the school and staff wearing yellow shirts to remind the students....

Bays UCL Institute of Neurology and Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience Working memory declines with normal aging, but the nature of this impairment is debated. Studies based on detecting changes to arrays of visual objects have identified two possible components to age-related decline: a reduction in the number of items that can be stored, or a deficit in maintaining the associations (bindings) between individual object features. However, some investigations have reported intact binding with aging, and specific deficits arising only in Alzheimer’s disease. Here, using a recently developed continuous measure of recall fidelity, we tested the precision with which adults of different ages could reproduce from memory the orientation and color of a probed array item. The results reveal a further component of cognitive decline: an age-related decrease in the resolution with which visual information can be maintained in working memory. This increase in recall variability with age was strongest under conditions of greater memory load. Moreover, analysis of the distribution...

...The campaign for suffrage - a historical background Today, all British citizens over the age of eighteen share a fundamental human right: the right to vote and to have a voice in the democratic process. But this right is only the result of a hard fought battle. The suffrage campaigners of the nineteenth and early twentieth century struggled against opposition from both parliament and the general public to eventually gain the vote for the entire British population in 1928. ------------------------------------------------- Who took part in the campaign? The first women's suffrage bill came before parliament in 1870. Soon after its defeat, in 1897, various local and national suffrage organisations came together under the banner of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) specifically to campaign for the vote for women on the same terms 'it is or may be granted to men'. The NUWSS was constitutional in its approach, preferring to lobby parliament with petitions and hold public meetings. In contrast, the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), formed in 1903, took a more militant view. Almost immediately, it characterised its campaign with violent and disruptive actions and events. Together, these two organisations dominated the campaign for women's suffrage and were run by key figures such as the Pankhurstsand Millicent Fawcett. However, there were other organisations prominent in the campaign, including the Women's Freedom League (WFL). These groups were often...

...Text and Context in Russian Legislation With Specific Reference To The Russian Constitution Nigel J. Jamieson* ABSTRACT Law and politics have a closer inter-textual relationship in Russian jurisprudence than would be understood generally of any European legal system. The closeness of this inter-textual relationship can be partly explained by history, culture, and language, as also by dialectics, ideologies, and literature. Concepts of law, government, and the state, together with concepts of federalism, democracy, and the rule of law, can vary so markedly from their apparently translatable equivalents that, even when recognising the formal concept of a codified Constitution, the inter-textual relationship between the enacted law and politics remains so dynamic as to be impossible to tell which it is, of law or of politics, that is the text, and which the context. This inter-textual relationship remains so strongly and continuously dynamic at the level of public and international law that the customary division by which lawyers, and common lawyers especially, assume law to be the text and politics to be the context carries a critical risk. This paper identifies that risk in terms of law, literature, and logic, as well as in terms of history, politics, and dialectics. To focus solely on law as a specialism without any more syncretic and synergic account of the other contributing disciplines, is to make the textual tail of the law wag the contextual dogsbody...
