Graduates This was a very important year for the College of Nursing, because the first graduates were officially recognized during the third Convocation for the University.  In late December, twenty-two BSN graduates had their Certificates of Graduation confirmed by the Government of Bangladesh. In the picture below, some are shown with Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mahmuda Khanum and Chair, Health Sciences, Dr. Karen Lund. In all about thirty students have graduated. Code of Ethics

...Iranian Journal of Public Health Tehran University of Medical Sciences The Code of Ethics for Nurses F Zahedi, M Sanjari, [...], and M Vahid Dastgerdi Additional article information Abstract Nurses are ever-increasingly confronted with complex concerns in their practice. Codes of ethics are fundamental guidance for nursing as many other professions. Although there are authentic international codes of ethics for nurses, the national code would be the additional assistance provided for clinical nurses in their complex roles in care of patients, education, research and management of some parts of health care system in the country. A national code can provide nurses with culturally-adapted guidance and help them to make ethical decisions more closely to the Iranian-Islamic background. Given the general acknowledgement of the need, the National Code of Ethics for Nurses was compiled as a joint project (2009–2011). ...and this number is on the increase. Prisoners have complex health needs and it is the role of the correctional health nurse to care for prisoner-patients and their health needs. Yet there is a paucity of research surrounding this topic. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the lived experience of nurses caring for prisoner-patients. Five registered nurses, employed in correctional centres in Southeast Queensland were interviewed to illuminate the experience of caring for prisoner-patients. Data was analyzed using Colaizzi’s (1978) method of phenomenology. Textual analysis revealed two themes with five corresponding sub-themes that depicted the meaning of nurses’ caring for prisonerpatients. The experience of nurses caring for prisoner-patients was described by nurse participants as ‘obstructive practices’ from the custodial officers, ‘decreased standards of care’ by nursing staff, ‘prejudice’ towards to prisoners, ‘increased level of mentally ill prisoners’ and a ‘lack of recognition’ for nurses working in the prisons. Amidst all these difficulties, nurses who cared for prisoner-patients demonstrated courage in the work they did and persevered for the sake of the their prisoner-patients and the specialty that is correctional health nursing. Communication must continue between prison and health care administrators in order to identify conflicting issues that impact on the autonomy of nurses delivering health care to prisoner-patients. Further research...

JAMBONGANA, RN CHARMAINE S. DACLES, RN ANA TESSA SOLIGUEN, RN STEPHANIE VARELA, RN TRACY SARMIENTO, RN MICHELLE CAñA, RN PEARL DOLALAS, RN ________________________________________ Respectfully Submitted to: MRS. MERLE SALVANI, MN Professor MASTER IN NURSING University of St. La Salle March 2011 Abstract At the undergraduate level, individual college and university administrations and faculties sometimes mandate core curricula, especially in the liberal arts. But because of increasing specialization and depth in the student's major field of study, a typical core curriculum in higher education mandates a far smaller proportion of a student's course work than a high school or elementary school core curriculum prescribes. In the United States, most control over education rests with the various state governments. Each state has different laws and objectives for education, but the states generally permit schools and colleges to operate with considerable independence and autonomy. As a result, American educational institutions can vary widely in the type and quality of their programs. To maintain consistent standards of education, the U.S. Department of Education officially recognizes private accrediting agencies...

Difference in Preparedness Between an Adn Degree Nurse and a Bsn Degree Nurse

...Running head: THE ASSOCIATES vs. THE BACCALAUREATE PREPARED NURSE 1 Educational Preparation Doris N. Nwoko Grand Canyon University College of Nursing Author Note Discussion on the differences in competencies between an associate degree prepared nurse versus the baccalaureate degree prepared nurse Abstract As nursing continues to strive for its rightful recognition in healthcare settings and the world at large, there has been and continues to be scrutiny and questions arising about the nursing profession. Also discussed is how does one differentiate the duties and responsibilities associated with one level from the other after all the term synonymous with both levels is a registered nurse (RN). The ANA definition of nursing is "Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations" (www.nursingworld.org). The ANA made no reference to the level of preparedness required to achieve the defined scope. On one hand, one might argue that the Associate Degree Nurse (ADN) and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) both sat for and passed the same NCLEX-RN examination (www.aacn.nche.edu). On the other, the medical field in general continues to advocate investment in the baccalaureate prepared nurse in its...

Factors That Influence the Health-Seeking Behavior of Non-Nursing Students of Xavier University School Year 2007-2008

...study, and definition of terms. INTRODUCTION        Health has been defined by the World Health Organization (1999) as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. An additional description says that “health is defined by what does not constitute health, namely disease” (Risse, 1999). Disease, on the other hand, has been defined as a “biological abnormality” or distress and disability that are based on abnormal processes and structural alterations of the human organism. These definitions represent what medical anthropologists call as ethic definitions or “behavioral phenomena considered in isolation from a particular system or in relation to predetermined general concepts” (Mish, 1990). Predetermined general concepts may be most applicable to people who are not in the medical field and may have different perceptions about health and how to sustain healthiness and well-being. Less exposure in the “real medical field” and lack of proper health education may result for them to have different ways on how to cope up with health or on the other side is to have no way to handle it due to lack of knowledge, skills, capabilities, and attitude towards the health problem. Others consider on the “healing powers” of some herbal medicines, chemically-prepared medicines, superstitious beliefs, and some with what-they-call “quack doctors”. Studies of health practices among Filipino-Americans suggest that people originally...
