In this paper, I will be discussing and connecting multiple communication concepts to the movie 500 Days of Summer. Specifically, I will discuss the differences between self-disclosure and lack of self-disclosure, how supportive versus defensive communication impacted the course of Tom and Summer’s overall relationship, and explain how those concepts ultimately lead to the relationship deterioration process. The problems Tom and Summer face throughout their relationship are important topics to be discussed due to the fact that they are common problems in many relationships today. It was very obvious at the beginning of the movie that Tom and Summer were two very different people. Tom was a shyer, less confident guy who was clearly …show more content…
Tom first encountered Summer when she was a new employee working in the same office as Tom. The first time they talked was when they were in an elevator together. Tom did not say anything to her and kept his headphones in, but Summer recognized the band that he was listening to and quickly disclosed to him that she knew the band and was a fan of them which, for Tom, confirmed his interest in her. They talked again when there was a work gathering at a bar for a karaoke night. That night, Tom and Summer disclosed more information about themselves, but it was all very surface level information. Summer disclosed that she was single and not looking for a relationship due to the fact that she did not believe in true love, and later in the night as Tom’s close friend McKenzie became more and more intoxicated, he revealed to Summer that Tom has feelings for her. After this discovery, Tom and Summer discussed being friends, and from there their relationship started. It was very obvious that Tom was willing to share more in depth information about himself, while Summer was very hesitant to share information …show more content…
Tom showed many more supportive communication skills, while Summer was much more defensive, but there were some occasions that were vice versa. When they initially talked about the existence of love, Tom was clearly much more open about his belief in love and was willing to listen to Summer about her opinion on the topic. Summer was clearly against the idea and did not accept that love could exist no matter what Tom said, which shows Tom’s provisional communication versus Summer’s certainty communication. Tom also showed defensive communication, such as strategic communication. For example, when Summer would be straightforward and honest and tell him that she wasn’t interested in a relationship, which was spontaneous communication, he would lie and manipulate her by pretending to agree in order to at least keep a friendship between them. Summer showed defensive communication, due to her tendency to be controlling. She controlled what she allowed Tom to see and know about her, and was willing to end the relationship anytime she felt uncomfortable. Tom was much more problem-oriented and was willing to try his best to resolve any tensions and problems. At first there was not a lot of reciprocity between the two at the beginning of the relationship but, they slowly became more open with each other. In the end, it was

...San Diego State University Syllabus World History Summer 2015 History 101 Dr. Mahdavi Student Learning Goals for Content and Skill Acquisition: This is a course in the history of the human community from approximately 1500 C.E. to the present. The course differs from the traditional Western Civilization class in that the entire world rather than Europe alone is the focus of study. The central questions the course will ask are these: What is Modernity, that is, what do we mean when we ask of "the modern world" in which we live? How have the political, social, cultural, and economic forces that we associate with modernity changed our world and its people during the past 500 years? Why has the intercommunication, interaction, and interdependence of the peoples of the world become so much more intense during the past 500 years than they were in earlier ages? How and why did western civilization rise to global domination in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and how has the challenge of western power and cultural prestige affected the course of history of all the World's people? Finally a question that we should be asking throughout the semester: how have the patterns of world history over the past 500 years determined or affected 1) the way we now live and think, and 2) our prospects for peace, prosperity, and the "pursuit of happiness" in the coming decades? This course is NOT primarily a narrative survey of civilizations, dynasties,...

...The Lebanese population is young, with a relatively high life expectancy at birth (72 years), reflecting a good access to health care and a full access to safe water and sanitation. Most of the health indicators have improved in the past decade. The country’s economy has been growing steadily since the end of the civil war in 1990, particularly due to the development of the service sector. The current poverty rate is not documented due to the absence of a recent household income and expenditure survey, but previous data and qualitative information suggest high poverty rates are still prevalent in some areas. The general improvement in the standard of living over the last decades has increased households’ access to affordable traditional varied and energy-dense local foods as well as to a “westernized” type of diet, including fat and salt-rich processed foods. According to some studies among adults, the high intake of fruit and vegetables, a unique feature of the Lebanese diet, goes together with an increase in fat intake which is currently at the higher limit of recommendations. These trends in dietary intake associated with a sedentary lifestyle are the major causes of the emergence of an obesity epidemic. The nutritional status of the Lebanese population is characterized by a nutrition transition with the persistence of micronutrient deficiencies and chronic malnutrition in young children (stunting), especially in the rural areas, and the emergence of a high prevalence of...

Marketing Case Study

...Case Study The information in the Case Study is used each week when writing the individual sections of the Marketing Communications Plan. One of your neighbors has just inherited a restaurant in a small town about 75 miles away. They’ve never owned or operated a business before, and know very little about marketing or the restaurant business. They now have a Marketing Plan, but need help with the Marketing Communications Plan. General Restaurant Information Provided by Your Neighbors: 1. They want to keep the “family’s” restaurant as a legacy to their family members who left it to them. However, they will need to make money immediately in order to replace the income they lost when they quit their jobs to run the restaurant. 2. The restaurant has been losing sales/profits over the past few years.  Family members have had some health issues (and have since passed away) and have not had the time to manage the restaurant effectively.  For the past few months, the Chef and some of the servers have been keeping the restaurant open. 3. The restaurant has a good reputation in the small community.  The town has a population of 6,000 people.  It is in a good location (right off an interstate) and does additional sales catering to local businesses in the area.  Over-the-road semi-drivers say it is the best cup of coffee in town and town’s people know that you can always find the local sheriff and highway patrol officers eating there.  People are allowed to smoke at their...

Financial Performance of a Business

... Prepared in quantitative details.  Reflects well-defined objectives and roles in organizations. The roles that budgets traditionally play in organizations are as follows: 1. To ensure the achievement of the organization’s objectives. Targets may be set for individual departments and organization as a whole to be achieved within the timescale of the budget plan. 2. To compel planning and decision-making. Planning makes management to look in future, to make decisions, to prepare detailed plans for attaining the targets, to foresee problems and give the organization direction. 3. To communicate ideas and plans. Each person affected by the plans should be aware of what he or she is supposed to be doing. Hence one-way or two-way communication is necessary in each level of organization. 4. To co-ordinate activities. It is important to co-coordinate all the activities of different departments of organization in order to ensure maximum integration of effort towards common goals. 5. To provide a framework for responsibility. Personal managers’ control is required to achieve budget targets. 6. To establish a system of monitoring and control. It is necessary to have a control over actual performance by comparing actual results against the budget plan. Material differences between actual and budgeted should be...
