Education 20 and Sean Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective College Students: Succeeding in College. . .and in Life was highly influential in both my personal and academic life. It helped me connect to my peers, reflect on personal experiences, and exposed me to information about UCSB that I was previously unaware of.
I have wanted to become a lawyer since I can remember. My mom and I would sit on the couch and watch Law and Order for hours on end. I always wanted to be just like Jack Mccoy's and stun the courtroom with overwhelming evidence and “put the bad guys away.” But, until I started college it was just a pipe dream-- I was not actively working towards this. Now, I am here working towards a degree but I was mostly just taking classes …show more content…
Covery believes that everyone should exercise these four various aspects in order to fully “sharpen the saw” (Covey, 2014, p. 256). Fortunately, UCSB offers programs and facilities that can help any student do this. Obviously, every student will have different ways to deal with their own “selves,” so these programs are not the only way to handle it, but they are a great start. When becoming in touch with your physical self, the obvious place is to go to the Recreation Center’s gym. Covey cites exercise as one of the important aspects when “sharpening the saw” (Covey, 2014, p. 256). However, student health is also an example of a place to do focus on your physical self. Often times, students are so wrapped up in school, work, and friends they tend to neglect their health. By going to student health for regular checkups, you are making sure everything is okay and ultimately it can be super beneficial in the end. Treating an illness right away will keep you from having to sit in the emergency room for hours on end when it becomes unbearable. When focussing on your mental state of being, the labyrinth on campus can be therapeutic and help you do so. Don Lubach mentioned in lecture to go the labyrinth with a problem in mind and try to fix that problem by the end (Lubach, 2016). So, taking his advice I tried it out for myself. It totally worked! Contradictorily, I also walked the labyrinth with absolutely nothing in mind. I just walked.. My mind was blank and it was absolutely amazing. Surprisingly enough, I was still calm the rest of the day after walking the labyrinth in the morning and now it is my go to place on campus when I feel my mental self straying away from normal. When you feel yourself spiritually unstable, there are 18 local churches that you can go to to center your spiritual self. On UCSB’s student life website lists a few local
