...THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE ~ BY STEPHEN COVEY THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE HABIT 1 : BE PROACTIVE Your life doesn't just "happen." Whether you know it or not, it is carefully designed by you. The choices, after all, are yours. You choose happiness. you choose sadness. you choose decisiveness. You choose ambivalence. You choose success. You choose failure. You choose courage. You choose fear. Just remember that every moment, every situation, provides a new choice. And in doing so, it gives you a perfect opportunity to do things differently to produce more positive results. Habit 1: Be Proactive is about taking responsibility for your life. You can't keep blaming everything on your parents or grandparents. Proactive people recognize that they are "response-able." They don't blame genetics, circumstances, conditions, or conditioning for their behavior. They know they choose their behavior. Reactive people, on the other hand, are often affected by their physical environment. They find external sources to blame for their behavior. If the weather is good, they feel good. If it isn't, it affects their attitude and performance, and they blame the weather. All of these external forces act as stimuli that we respond to. Between the stimulus and the response is your greatest power--you have the freedom to choose your response. One of the most important things you choose is what you say. Your language is a good indicator of how you see yourself. A proactive person...

...develops and articulates a vision for the future and gets people excited about it. The second activity is aligning. This means that the leader ensures that a company's organization, systems, and processes are consistent with, and contribute to, the leader's vision and the company's mission. The third activity is empowering. This means that the leader gives the people in the organization the power and resources to accomplish their portion of the organization's mission. This will unleash hidden talents, energy, and creativity. Covey trains leaders for companies in a variety of ways. These include books, on-site workshops, seminars, and training events at his institute for leadership in Utah. Covey also encourages follow-up training and assessment. Many companies have credited Covey and his training for helping them to develop leaders for the future. ...effectively solve problems, maximize opportunity, continually learn and integrate principles in an upward growth. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey 1. Being Proactive Proactivity means taking initiative, as a human being, we are responsible for our own lives. Our behavior is a function of our decisions, not our conditions. Highly proactive people recognize responsibility. “Response-ability” means the ability to choose your response. In making such a choice, we become reactive. Reactive people are affected by their physical and social environment, the ‘social weather’. Proactive people are influenced by external stimuli, whether physical, social or psychological. 2. Begin with the End in Mind “Begin with the end in mind” is to begin today with the image, picture or paradigm of the end of your life as your frame of reference or the criterion by which everything else is examined. It means to start with clear understanding of your destination. It also means to know where you are going so that you better understand where you are now so you can go to a right direction. 3. Putting First Things First Effective management is putting first things first. While leadership decides what “first things’ are, it is management that puts them first. Management is discipline carrying it out. 4. Think Win/Win The habit of effective interpersonal leadership is Think Win/Win. Win/Win is not a technique it is a total philosophy of human interaction. In...

... “Two Habits I Need to Work on” When reading the book Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, written by Stephen R. Covey, I learned that I need to work on some things, if I want to be successful. I need to set specific goals because goals are what drive people to be successful. Covey talks about a “Paradigm Shift” and wants his readers to change their mindset. He proposes seven habits that effective people portray throughout their life and he wants everybody to pick these up in order to be more successful. The two habits that I am going to focus on are Habit 1: Be Proactive, and Habit 4: Think Win-Win. I want to focus on these two because when reading about these two, I feel that if I can improve these habits, I can bolster my mindset/life. I feel that everybody can be more proactive. This is Covey’s first habit. This habit discusses that your decisions are the primary factor for determining effectiveness in your life. You have to take responsibility for your choices and the consequences that follow your decisions. You choose if you are happy or sad. Every second that you live, you decide what you are doing with your life. Covey then says that if you’re not happy with your life, change it. It only takes one decision. However, it starts with one decision but that one may trigger a bunch of others. You cannot blame everything on your parents or grandparents. Covey talks about two different people in this chapter. There are proactive and reactive people. Proactive...

...7 Habits of Highly Effective People Book Summary Before going into the actual 7 habits, the author Steve Covey goes into few important concepts. Character Ethic (good) There are basic principles of effective living and people can only experience true success and enduring happines as they learn and integrate these principles into their basic character. Personality Ethic (not so good) It is manipulative, deceptive, encouraging people to use techniques to get other people to like them. Personality ethic is illusory and deceptive and trying to get high quality results with its techniques and quick fixes – not effective at all. Paradigm The book talks a lot about paradigm shifts and I remember having to look it up in the dictionary to find the true meaning of it; paradigm meaning: model, theory, perception, assumption, the way we see world. Conditioning affects our perceptions/paradigms (old/young lady drawing example in the book worth checking out). We see the world not as it is but as ‘we are’ through our paradigms. Different people can have different views and still both be correct. The more aware we are of our basic paradigms the more we can examine/test them against reality, listen to others and be open to their perceptions getting a larger picture and far more objective view. Paradigm shifts move us from one way of seeing the world to another. They influence our relationship with others. Not all are good. If we want to make relatively minor changes in our lives we...

Every day we live adds twist and color to our existence. In the lyrics of Francis Magalona’s song entitled Kaleidoscope World, “Every color, every hue, is represented by me and you…” which somewhat relates to why people uniquely responds to certain circumstances. Though unique, I believe that there are ways that may actually work and be effective for all. One of those ways is contained in what my Management teacher assigned us to read, Stephen Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” The book is really about knowing and nurturing the fundamental truths in your life and making them accessible to you at all times to the point where it’s easy to draw solutions to problems from them, making you a much more effective person in all aspects of life. Habit 1: Be Proactive (Principles of Personal Vision) There’s a lot of things that are happening everyday and minority of it concerns us. Based on...

We must prepare ourselves for READY for us ahead PREPARE YOURSELF FOR YOU OPPORTUNITY TO BE SUCCESS…. I am reminded of a story I heard years ago about a farmer and his hand…As I paraphrase this story it reminds me of how dedication leads to preparation and how preparing yourself for your opportunity will lead you to success. This farmer was in town and as he entered into town, he noticed the clouds getting darker and darker. Everyone started rushing into town to get supplies and food for this seemingly massive storm that was coming. People were panicking and some confused about what to do. The farmer rushed home and immediately woke up his hired hand frantic. Saying there is a storm coming and we must prepare for it…The farm hand looked confused and asked for clarification. The farmer said we need to gather all the hay…the farm hand stated that it’s been gathered, because he does it at the end of each day…he stated that they needed to make sure the barn was secure and the horses have enough food and water…the farm hand again said, Sir, they have enough food and water because that is something I do every day. See when you prepare yourself for your STORM on a daily basis, when it comes you will be ready. When you use every day as a tool to better yourself rather it’s...

...Immigration Roberto Hernandez Sociology-1301-10D1 04/20/14 A great portion of the United States is built upon immigrants. People come to this country for a "better life." A life of opportunities and freedom. I lived in Mexico for the first13 years of my life. As a child, I remember watching American shows that were translated into Spanish. I always dreamed and pictured myself attending a school with lockers and a gym class just like the ones on TV. It never occurred to me to see myself in this country doing everything that I dreamed of. Being able to go to places that I thought was once impossible for me to see. Being able to have an education; a future. All of this was made possible because of my uncle. If it wasn't for him, my parents, grandparents, and I would not be living here in the land of opportunities. Because of my uncle, my dad was able to work here as a lawful permanent resident. Meaning, he is a foreign national given the privilege of permanently living and working in the United States. In order for this to unfold, the immigrant has to have a relative whom is already living in the United States who is willing to sponsor them and prove that they have enough income to support them and/or their family. With this, of course there are many steps that follow. To begin, the USCIS must approve an immigrant visa petition filed by the sponsor (my uncle) for the immigrant. Then, they would need to demonstrate income and take total responsibility by completing...

...* "[O]ne of the functions of phonetic stress is to make words understandable. This kind of stress, known as word-level stress, is actually part of a word's pronunciation. It may also serve to differentiate words that are similar. For example, We're going to record a record, the two similar words are stressed differently so that the first record is stressed on the second syllable (vowel reduction in the first syllable also assists in helping us to assign stress to the second syllable), whereas the second record is stressed on the first syllable (with vowel reduction in the second syllable). All words of more than one syllable have a prominent or stressed syllable. If we pronounce a word with appropriate stress, people will understand us; if we use the wrong stress placement, we run the risk of being misunderstood. "Phrase or sentence stress is tied to meaning, and this is the second function of stress. As we focus a camera on some item of interest, phonetic stress helps us focus our listener's attention on what is most important in our message." (Harold T. Edwards, Applied Phonetics: The Sounds of American English, 3rd ed. Thomson, 2003) * "Stresses tend to recur at regular intervals. But the sound pattern of English does not make it an overriding necessity to adjust the lengths of syllables so as to enforce complete regularity. The interval between stresses is affected by the number of syllables within the stress group, by the number and type of vowels and consonants...

...HANDY-DANDY GUIDE TO WRITING A REACTION PAPER If you were to ask 10 people, "How do I write a Reaction Paper?" you'd probably get 10 different responses. No one seems to know exactly how to do one, yet almost everyone is assigned one at some point in his or her academic career. Here is a guide to what faculty are usually "looking for" in a well-written reaction paper. Remember, however, that every faculty member is different: some will want you to spend more time "analyzing" or "evaluating" the piece, others on giving your personal reactions to it. The best rule of thumb is to ask your faculty member for clarification. You might even consider giving him or her this guideline and asking him or her to revise it to reflect his or her expectations. I. SUMMARY/SYNOPSIS – What are you reacting to? GOAL: Show that you understand the thesis, main ideas, and supporting ideas in the piece you're writing about. Identify all of the "basic information: about the book that you can, including: • the author of the piece, the title of the piece, the title of the book or journal from which it was taken (if relevant), the publisher, and the year of publication; • the topic or subject of the piece—for example, "The Triangle Shirt-Waist Fire" or "Revitalization efforts underway in Roxbury's Codman Square." In other words, tell what the piece is about in a word or a phrase; • the author's purpose or motive for writing the piece—for example, "to expose the dangerous conditions factory workers...
