“Eight goals, one world” - this is the slogan for the United Millennium Development Goals. In 2002, the United Nations Millennium Campaign started with eight goals to be achieved by 2015 for under developed countries. They are:

1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.
2. Achieve universal primary education
3. Promote gender equality and empower women
4. Reduce child mortality
5. Improve maternal health
6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
7. Ensure environmental sustainability
8. A global partnership for development.

The campaign is meant to inspire change and inspire people to help those who could not help themselves. With goal #1 – eradicate poverty and hunger – the objective is to get rid of world hunger because there are so many hungry and poor people in the world who have no access to nourishing food. One of the suggestions by the UNMC was to give women more power in the home because from studies they had done and seen, when women have more authority in their own home, their families are healthier. And economies are more prosperous when its people are healthy and can work. This goal should be met because it will make our world a better place. Healthy people are happy and they work, and work brings prosperity to a nation that can bring globalization, which will make a better and more connected world. Universal primary education is imperatively important to people. Education breeds skills and also inspires hope and opportunity for a job and happiness. This is an incredible goal and the most important to me because education is power. It empowers people. Gender equality and empowering women is giving women the right to have authority in their homes, communities and nations. Studies have shown that when women are in control in their homes, families are healthier and

The Millennium Development Goals: Global Health Inequities

...The Millennium Development Goals (or MDG) are a set of 8 goals set by the world’s nations in hope of reducing poverty by 2015. These 8 goals address poverty, education, equality, disease and the environment. Each goal has a targets and indicators we are aiming to achieve by 2015. The purpose of this report is to report on the history, objectives and constitution of the MDG’s and the success and effectiveness of the MDGs. History of MDGs: In the 1990’s the United Nation (UN) member states went through a historically extraordinary UN press conference process. This conference was aimed at building consensus on development priorities for the 21st century. However, at the end of the 1990’s the governments of the conference experienced conference fatigue and feared the process launched by the conferences was losing steam. In September 2000 in New York there was a large gathering of world leaders called the Millennium Summit. This was the largest gathering of world leaders in history including 189 UN member-states. At the Millennium Summit the United Nation Millennium Declaration was adopted as a result of a series of global conferences held during the 1990’s. The UN saw the Millennium Summit as an opportunity to bring back the development of priorities for the 21st century. It was at this Millennium Summit that the Millennium Declaration set in motion a global partnership and was signed by 147 heads of states. The Millennium declaration had 8 chapters and key objectives...

World Bank

...Purpose[edit] The World Bank and IMF require countries to produce a Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper as a condition for debt relief through the HIPC initiative and other monetary aid, as do several bilateral donors.[2] PRSPs are intended to help aid recipient countries meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).[1] They detail a country's plan to promote growth and reduce poverty through implementation of specific economic, social and structural policies over a period of three years or longer.[7][1] PRSPs provide lending organizations, like the World Bank and the IMF, assurance that aid receiving countries will utilize aid to pursue development outcomes that have been elaborated in the PRSPs and approved by lenders. Goals[edit] The IMF has outlined five core principles for the process through which PRSPs are elaborated.[1] First, it should be country-driven, meaning that country ownership of the strategy should be culminated through broad-based participation of civil society.[1] It should also be result-oriented by focusing on outcomes that will benefit the poor, comprehensive in exploring and understanding the multidimensional nature of poverty, partnership-oriented by involving development partners such as the government, domestic stakeholders, and external donors.[1] Lastly, the development of the PRSP should be based on a long-term perspective geared towards reducing poverty.[1] These core principles are central to the goals of the PRS process. Poverty-focused government[edit] ...

...UNIT 8 FINAL PROJECT OUTLINE UNIT 8 -Final Project Outline- Sharing Your Insight Esha M Johnson-Drinkard Kaplan University Outline for Final Project-Unit 8- Sharing Your Insight I. Welcome to the first day of the rest of your life A. The college experience is one of growth and discovery. The first advice and best advice I can offer you is to keep an open mind. College is nothing like high school, so try not to compare the two. You don’t have someone watching over you all the time; your parents aren’t going be there to walk you through everything. You have to become independent and strong minded to make it. B. This is the rest of your life. The choices you make now, from this point on, are the ones that will effect how you will be in the future. From the job you pick, to your daily routines, and just life in general. Whatever career you want to do, or learn, your life will revolve around that. So pick wisely and have an idea of what drives you, what awakens your passion for growth and learning. Then, take that knowledge and head in the right direction. II. The Road to Self-Discovery  A. Self Discovery, I know it sounds scary to actually have to analyze yourself, but you are your worst enemy, and also your best friend. You hold the key to discovering who you are and who you want to be. ...Own the Goals What the Millennium Development Goals Have Accomplished By John W. McArthur For more than a decade, the Millennium Development Goals -- a set of time-bound targets agreed on by heads of state in 2000 -- have unified, galvanized, and expanded efforts to help the world's poorest people. The overarching vision of cutting the amount of extreme poverty worldwide in half by 2015, anchored in a series of specific goals, has drawn attention and resources to otherwise forgotten issues. The MDGs have mobilized government and business leaders to donate tens of billions of dollars to life-saving tools, such as antiretroviral drugs and modern mosquito nets. The goals have promoted cooperation among public, private, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), providing a common language and bringing together disparate actors. In his 2008 address to the UN General Assembly, the philanthropist Bill Gates called the goals "the best idea for focusing the world on fighting global poverty that I have ever seen." The goals will expire on December 31, 2015, and the debate over what should come next is now in full swing. This year, a high-level UN panel, co-chaired by British Prime Minister David Cameron, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, and Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, will put forward its recommendations for a new agenda. The United States and other members of the UN General Assembly will then consider these recommendations, with growing powers, such as Brazil...

Any manager or leader, who strives for success, should acquire certain valuable characteristics. These characteristics will help determine the effectiveness of the leader. “Effective leadership is one key element in the success of a group and virtually anyone can learn to be an effective leader.” (Success by Design) Modern theories of leadership suggest that the skills needed to become an...

Suggest Reasons for the Variable Progress Towards Achieving the Millennium Development Goal Targets.

...Suggest reasons for the variable progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goal targets. (10) The United National is an organization composed of many countries all over the world, and was founded in 1945. The introduction of the Millennium Development Goals is one of the major steps the UN has made to achieve some of their aims. The goals include 8 separate targets agreed in the 1990’s set to be reached by 2015. There are however, reasons that have made this target hard to come by. With the exception of the Sub Saharan Africa; all regions are on track to achieve MDG1 (Eradicate extreme hunger and poverty). The main issue is facing the achievement of this particular MDG is the economic strength of certain countries, in addition the climate and geographical features of each country need to be taken into consideration. It is clear some countries will meet the standard needed by 2015 whilst othe§ rs will be left behind. The 2009 global depression costed sub-Saharan Africa’s people £12.8 billion, which as a result makes its MDG hard to achieve. The world bank is said to increase its support to agriculture to between $6 billion, and $8 billion a year over the next three years, up from $4.1 billion annually before 2008. Millennium Development Goals also consist of that related to health e.g health issues, maternal health, HIV/Aid, child maternity etc. These three MDG’s have already been achieved by Thailand; however other countries appear to be struggling. In Uganda...

My Paper

...4, 2010 Matthew Jordan Functions of Management Paper Management is the key to accomplishing organizational goals. With effectiveness (achievement of the goals) and efficiency (achievement of goals while utilizing resources such as money, time, materials and people without waste), it can be the difference between great management and poor management. While great managers are able to focus on both criteria, others are only capable to focus on one and not the other. Unfortunately, there are poor managers who are unsuccessful at both. These two criteria, however, are not the only components to successful management as the circumstances surrounding the process of conducting business are changing in today’s business world. “The great executives not only adapt to changing conditions but also apply-fanatically, rigorously, consistently, and with discipline-the fundamental management principles,” (Bateman & Snell, 2009). Included in these fundamentals are the four traditional functions of management: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. When applying these fundamentals to the process of accomplishing organizational goals, effective and efficient management is inevitable. The first function of management is planning. Specifying the goals of the organization takes place in planning as well as its necessary actions needed in achieving those goals. Activities of planning consist of analyzing current situations, anticipating the future, and determining the resources...
