I don’t why it happened. Why did it have to be her? What was a relaxing date with my beautiful girlfriend, Phillis, has turned into a dark day, clouded with anxiety, and fear for our lives.

“Phillis, you look so beautiful tonight,” I smiled, raising a glass of wine. She gently clinked her glass against mine and took a sip.
“And you look quite attractive yourself, Vernon.” A perfect day. A perfect day with the perfect woman. Trying to hide my growing worry, I put down the glass.
“Close your eyes,” I mumbled.
“Close my eyes?” She asked, giving me a look of utter confusion. I gave her a pleading look in response, unable to formulate words.
“This better not be a trick,” She sighed, closing her eyes and covering them with her front legs to cover her eyes. Once I was sure she couldn’t see, I reached behind me to grab the ring. Tonight is the night I make the love of my life my wife and I couldn’t be more nervous. I took a few seconds to prepare myself, but when I turned around she was gone. …show more content…
I looked to where her voice had come from and I saw a sight that made my heart stop; there she was, hanging by her her leg, in the hand of a human boy. I bounded after her. I would not let her go without a fight, whatever that equaled for me, I didn’t care. I followed them into a human house, and to a room where he dropped her into the ear of a sleeping

It Is Changez’s Shifting Identity That Creates the Main Interest and Tension in the Novel. Do You Agree?

...the rise in tension. As the novel is told to us through the words of Changez, he is obviously considered to be the protagonist; the source of a large part of the angst which resonates from the text. Another prominent character in the novel, Erika, pulls away from the complete focus on Changez, adding in on another of the main sources of tension, as well as a part of the reasons for Changez’ change in identity. Another cause of tension comes from The American as well as the waiter, who occur outside of Changez’ narrative and add an undercurrent of mistrust. These characters add to the strain in the text, bringing in suspicion and highlighting many of the issues that Changez raises in his narrative and left ambiguous to allow for interpretation. From the obvious similarities between Changez’ name and change, it can be seen that Changez himself is a symbol for change. These changes that Changez experiences coincide with his shifting identity. From the outset of his narrative within the novel, Changez can be seen to be ‘hungry for success’, eager to chase after his goals, and willing to do just about anything to succeed. Changez can also be viewed to be extremely proud, and although Jim says they both ‘came from the tailbone’, and Changez was ‘just like me’, Changez came from a family who was still considered to be of a high social standard, being invited to all the ‘social events’. So although Changez came from a less wealthy family he was ‘on the front step’ as opposed to locked...

Use of Historical Data

...individual events can be, and are often selected differently by those who have different approaches. In the case of realists, they have an objective view and often use the factual, scientific and quantifiable evidence to understand theories. For the case of 9/11, a realist would only look at this event as an occurrence that was simply a terror attack with explosions and the death of civilians. Realists would view cases such as this as happenings that simply support a theoretical approach along with several other similar cases in history, due to the fact that it is experienced evidence that is universally known and understood. A constructivist however would select and look at cases based upon historical memory and they way they were experienced by multiple different populates. For the case of 9/11, a constructivist would view this historical case as a terror attack that caused trauma to the United States of America and is an event that is more than the deaths of thousands. They would dissect historical events and convey the emotions that were felt, as well as the explosions that ensued, because these theorist believe that there can’t be an objective and single-fact overview of historical events, instead they are subjective yet all true at the same time. Objective accuracy is described as the actual state in which things actually exist. Realist theorists believe that objective accuracy does exist in the historical data used in international relations, and that it can be measured as...

...article Popular and Official Responses to 9/11 in Germany and The United States written by scholar Peter Knight. The article critically analyzes the conspiracy theories that emerged in American society years after the tragic events of 9/11. Knight’s main assertion through out the article, is that 9/11 conspiracy theories have more in common with the official reports of the events of 9/11 than many people would assume. He does this my showing comparing and contrasting the two accounts, highlighting the similarities in their narratives. Firstly, the author supports his claim by showing how they both reinforce an essentialist framework of thinking. Firstly, there was a rejection of any blame or accountability, as president Bush...

Fear And Loathing In Americ Article Analysis

...Out of this week’s readings, I much preferred the short story, Fear & Loathing in America to The New York Times article. I found myself rather bored reading the article about the many sporting events being called off, immediately after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. I will admit that I am not much of a sports fan - especially not American sports teams – however I tried to read the article with an open mind. Litsky and Williams (2011) wrote the article in a very fact-based, typical news story way, which meant that if the reader is not at all interested in the subject matter, the narrative style does nothing to make the reader interested in reading on. Even the title sparked little interest; I was surprised they did not use the words, ‘terrorist attacks’ in the title, as most media like to grab the reader’s attention immediately. Thompson (2011) on the other hand, wrote a completely different kettle of fish that did not focus so much on sport, but more about the shocking 9/11 attacks. Thompson (2011) aptly described, “Football suddenly seemed irrelevant, compared to the scenes of destruction and utter...

...at his Reformation Lutheran Church, ushering. Another thing that is sickening is he actually states, when asked his views on abortions, is that: "It is not man's job to take life – it's our Heavenly Father's. It's never up to man to take life, except in defense of self or others.” This goes to show that people who do radical things in the name of Christianity are often misled and take things out of context. The next main question I want to ask is that is it the same case when it comes to Islam. Do people take the Qu’ran out of context and are other mislead? Very few people believe this in the Sophomore class at FBCA. Many students stated that Qu’ran did teach violence and was a crude book to nonbeliever of that religion. Is that really true,...

The Biblical world view I am going to talk to you about is Gods image from two sides. Frist I will share with you the view of the Old Testament and second I will share the view of the New Testament. The Theological world view on the Old Testament and the New Testament on Gods image there is no big contradictions if you understand how to read the narratives and understand the Bible. I will say that in the Old Testament narratives do talk more about man made from God image from flesh narratives then flesh and bone narratives except one passage. The characteristics of prophets in the Bible we will discover similar messages on the creation of man in Gods image. “After God had made all other creatures, he created man, male and female, with reasonable and immortal souls, endued with knowledge, righteousness, and true holiness, after his own image, having the law of God written in their hearts, and power to fulfill it; and yet under a possibility of...

Film Review

...United 93 Review – Unorthodox Award Paul Greengrass’ raucous portrayal of film United 93 demonstrates and explores the unexpected tragedy of the 9/11 only 5 years ago, through the impotence of the characters, pace and overall cinematography. Greengrass’ use of characterisation conveyed the clear sense of powerlessness over the tragedy, illustrating the enmity between eastern and western beliefs and cultures revealing a dominant divide between cultures and religion which may not have been considered previously by some viewers. Meanwhile, the use of little to no known bought the film home as it enforced the realness of the events that took place in the movie and made the audience look into not only the true meaning of the film but look deeply at themselves, giving them a reality check about the society we live in today; not just the dilly dallying of the ‘to see’ actors of that month. However, although many may applaud Greengrass’ portrayal of the characters, (many of whom were based on people who were really effected in the 9/11), the film has also been ‘criticized for its portrayal of German passenger Christian Adams,’ who was the only passenger the plane ‘demonstrated with counselling appeasement.’ All in all, we must ask ourselves, did we go to watch it to get a good laugh out of it or get an insight into our increasingly cracking society? Likewise, the cinematography in all aspects can be applauded by the audience as Greengrass’ sheer impudence demonstrated...

Discuss Unrealiability in Shutter Island Film Studies Essay

...absence of reliability or perception of the narrative. "Whether due to age, mental disability or personal involvement, an unreliable narrator provides the reader with either incomplete or inaccurate information as a result of these conditions." [1] As Wayne Booth once stated: "I have called a narrator reliable when he speaks for or acts in accordance with the norms of the work, (which is to say, the implied authors norms) unreliable when he does not" [2] . We are consumers of narratives which has given us the ability to identify unreliable stories. However as "theoreticians, we are less well able to say what constitutes unreliability and how it is detected". [3] Shutter Island is a film adapted, from a novel, by Martin Scorsese; the film is within the film noir genre, with an unreliable narrator that, as result, plays with your mind and makes the film appear to be very ambiguous. Shutter Island is clearly shown through the perspective of a fallacious narrator. A narrator's job is to reveal what is real in the narrative and, comparable to tellers in reality, the narrator may have it incorrect or would rather disclose what they deem to be true. "On this model we perceive narrative unreliability when we perceive a disparity between the intentions of the implied author concerning what is true in the story and the intentions of the narrator concerning what she would have the reader believe." [4] Shutter Islands' narrative follows this idea as throughout the film, the...
