In 2011/12, 7.3% women (1.2 million) and 5% men (800,000) report having experienced domestic abuse2. 31% women and 18% men have experienced domestic abuse since the age of 16 years. This amounts to 5 million women and 2.9 million men3. Domestic violence has repeatedly been identified as a major factor leading to death in or related to pregnancy and childbirth: see below. Since I can remember black women have been characterized as mean and argumentative, but also strong and self-sacrificing for their families. Black families on TV were always portrayed as single mother households. In my community there was also a reoccurring reality of domestic violence against women.
